1 Prtecting Gd s Children Tuching Safety Instructins fr Educatrs, Catechists, Yuth Ministers, and Other Caring Adults Lessn 1 fr Grades K, 1, and 2: Tuching Safety Rules Getting started with Lessn 1: Principle: Catechism: Gal: Objectives: Children must guard against thse wh may harm them thrugh tuch (sexual r therwise). Because the Hly Spirit is the aninting f Christ, it is Christ wh, as the head f the Bdy, purs ut the Spirit amng his members t nurish, heal, and rganize them in their mutual functins, t give them life, send them t bear witness, and assciate them t his self-ffering t the Father and t his intercessin fr the whle wrld. Thrugh the Church s sacraments, Christ cmmunicates his Hly and sanctifying Spirit t the members f his Bdy. #739 1 T assist educatrs, catechists, yuth ministers, and ther caring adults in teaching children hw t prevent r reduce the risk f sexual abuse. Thrugh this lessn the catechist, teacher, r yuth minister reinfrces the parent s message abut tuching safety and prtecting private bdy parts. Upn cmpletin f this lessn, children shuld be better able t: Repeat and understand the tuching rules. Say N! when smene tries t tuch them in a way that is uncmfrtable r therwise inapprpriate. Dealing with the primary age key cncept is activity Parents and guardians are the primary educatrs f their wn children. Teaching children the names f their private bdy parts is the respnsibility f parents. Yung children have lively and vivid imaginatins, are grwing less self-centered, and are becming mre cnscius f thers. Their attentin span is shrt apprximately 20 minutes. They build n cncrete experiences, lve t learn, and are highly inquisitive. Hwever, they rely almst entirely n thers t define gd and bad fr them. Parents shuld make every effrt t create an envirnment where children are free t ask questins abut life and their wn bdies. 2 Prtecting Gd s Children Tuching Safety Lessn 1 fr Grades K, 1, and 2: Tuching Safety Rules Activity #1: Play the (ptinal) intrductry vide t begin the lessn: Nte t Teacher: The intrductry vide fr grades K thrugh 5 is designed t pen a simple discussin with children abut tuching safety and persnal bundaries. The vide is apprximately six (6) minutes lng and is neither created nr intended as a substitute fr the lessn itself. It is merely an intrductin designed t break the ice amng thse in this age grup and t get everyne talking abut the relevant persnal bundary and persnal safety issues. Imprtantly, the vide will get children fcused n the tpic matter, which will help the teacher t facilitate an easy transitin int the interactive activities within the lessn. These interactive activities are the critical cmpnents where children have a real pprtunity t learn hw t prtect themselves. We recmmend that yu watch the vide in advance at least a cuple f times prir t shwing it t yur students, s yu ll be able t mre easily anticipate when the vide will end. The vide really needs n intrductin. Just put it int the machine, and hit play. If yu re using a DVD versin f the vide, yu ll select the English r Spanish versin and the apprpriate age grup frm a menu screen. If yu re using a VHS versin f the vide, yu ll need t cue the tape t the crrect versin prir t yur class time. Activity #2: Review and discuss the vcabulary wrds: Private bdy parts thse bdy parts that are cvered by a bathing suit. Secret smething kept hidden r unexplained. [Nte t Teachers: Let children knw that there are n secrets when it cmes t persnal and physical safety. Tell children that it is wrng fr an adult r anther child t ask a child t keep a secret abut safety especially unsafe tuches because that is a way fr peple t get hurt. When a child knws that he r she desn t have t keep a secret and that n matter what the mlester says, the child will nt be in truble fr telling what happened he r she is mre likely t reveal bundary vilatins.] Rules a prescribed guide fr cnduct r actin. [Fr example, teach yur child a simple rule fr what t d if smene tries t tuch him r her in an unsafe way. The child must send a clear signal t any child r adult whse behavir is unsafe a signal that unsafe behavir will nt be tlerated and will be reprted.] Activity #3: Learning t name the bdy parts Directins: In preparing fr this activity, review Teaching Tuching Safety: A Guide fr Parents, Guardians, and Other Caring Adults. Help children t see that they have a say in what happens t their bdies. Teach children bdy part names by using the fllwing sng. Tuch each part as yu sing it: Head and shulders, knees and tes, knees and tes. Head and shulders, knees and tes, knees and tes. (Repeat several times, gradually increasing the temp speed each time) Talk with children abut the difference between these regular bdy parts and private bdy parts: We treat private bdy parts as special by keeping them cvered. One reasn is t help keep ur private bdy parts clean and healthy. Ask children what t d if smene wants t tuch their private bdy parts r if an adult asks a child t tuch the adult s private bdy parts. Say N! Run away. Tell a safe adult what happened. What if a grwnup is nt tuching yur private bdy parts, but is ding smething else that makes yu feel kind f icky? What if the persn wh is trying t tuch yur private bdy parts is a bigger kid, and nt an adult? What if a grwnup tells yu that n ne will believe yu if yu tell? What if the grwnup wh makes yu feel icky is smene yu really like, smene yur family knws and likes, r even smene in yur family? Activity #4: Passprt t Tuching Safety Directins: Supplies: Backgrund: Making the Passprt: This is an activity that the children will start during this lessn and finish during Lessn 2. Just as adults carry a passprt when they travel in freign cuntries, children can design and carry a passprt as a reminder t keep them safe when they travel t r frm hme, schl, church, r any ther places they g. 8½ x 11 r 9 x 12 sheets f cnstructin paper Crayns, clred pencils, and felt tipped markers Children shuld think abut safe tuches they have received frm safe friends and safe adults. Nte: Teachers shuld dwnlad the passprt template frm the VIRTUS Online website. G t and lg in with yur user id and passwrd. Then, click the Educatrs tab at the tp f the screen. Fllw the instructins in the main (white) area f the screen t select yur age grup (K-2), this lessn plan (Lessn 1), and click frward thrugh the successive screens until yu reach the screen titled Tuching Safety Supprting Materials. At the bttm f that screen (beneath the instructins abut the saint), yu ll find a place t dwnlad and print the template fr the passprt. Print the tw-page template n the frnt and back f 8½ x 11 cnstructin paper r white cpier type paper. Children will persnalize the Passprts by flding the pre-printed paper in half t frm a Passprt bklet, by drawing their wn picture in the frnt cver f the Passprt, and by drawing and clring n the inside pages that illustrate safe tuches and safe adults. The first page f the Passprt is fr the child s picture and his r her first name. The secnd and third pages (the inside pages) are fr illustrating safe tuches and t help the child understand the meaning f safe adults and special safe adults. Fr the purpse f Lessn 1, children will cmplete nly the cver f the Passprt and will begin wrking n pages 2 and 3. They will cmplete pages 2 and 3 during Lessn 2. The frnt cver includes the wrds MY PASSPORT in large letters. The child will draw his r her picture and decrate the cver t make it attractive. On the line beneath the picture, the child will write his r her name. The inside f the Passprt includes the fllwing pages: One page fr drawing and clring riginal artwrk t illustrate safe tuches. One page fr drawing and clring riginal artwrk t illustrate safe and special safe adults. The back cver lists the tuching safety rules. Discussin: While the children are creating their Passprts, the teacher shuld use the pprtunity t again reinfrce the tuching safety rules: N ne has the right t tuch a child s private bdy parts except t keep him r her clean and healthy and then, nly a few special safe adults have that right as designated by the child s parents. Remember: Because this activity will cntinue in Lessn 2, yu ll need t cllect the Passprts frm yur students and keep them in a safe place until time t finish them during Lessn 2. Suggested prayer t end the lessn: Dear Gd, Smetimes things happen t me that are cnfusing r frightening. When I am cnfused r feel scared, help me remember what I have learned tday. Help me remember the tuching rules s I can prtect myself frm anyne wh might want t hurt me even if it is smene I like. Thank yu fr my parents r lved nes and my teachers wh are teaching me hw t keep myself safe and healthy. Remind me that I am special and that yu are always with me. Amen Alternate prayer: Dear Gd, Smetimes when things happen, I get scared. Smetimes I just get mixed up like when a persn I care abut des smething that makes me feel creepy r scared.
