Research has shwn that in the hur after schl is dismissed, vilent juvenile crime dubles. The number f yung peple wh becme victims f vilent crime als rises, and yung peple are mre likely t take part in risky activities, frm smking and drinking t drug use and sexual activity. 1 A 2003 survey f 800 registered vters cnducted by the Afterschl Alliance fund that nine ut f ten Americans think after schl prgrams are imprtant. Vters want after schl prgrams in their cmmunities because they prvide a safe place fr children and teens t g after schl. In fact, 94% f survey respndents agreed that there shuld be rganized activities r places fr children and teens t g every day that prvide pprtunities t learn. 2 Bwling is a great activity fr kids t engage in after schl. Nt nly des bwling prvide a fun activity that virtually any child can enjy, it als teaches them sprtsmanship, teamwrk, and character. Starting an after schl prgram is n easy task, but the rewards bth financial and the impact yu can have n these students lives is well wrth it! Objectives The bjective f this chapter is t help yu develp, market, and execute a successful after schl prgram that will be enjyable t students and revenue-generating fr yur center. Actin Plan 1. 2 What time are parents required t pick up their children? 2. Determine hw yu will handle transprtatin There are several ptins fr transprting students t yur center: Cntract with yur schl t bus the students t yu. Include the fee t cver this in the price f the after schl prgram. Cntract with yur lcal public transprtatin prvider, if applicable. Purchase yur wn bus. Used schl buses are ften available fr $1,000 - $2,000. They must be repainted. A recent search n ebay.cm yielded 112 buses, ranging in price frm nly $100 t ver $50,000. Yu will als need a specially licensed driver with a CDL (Cmmercial Driver s License) license with a P (Passenger) endrsement. Requirements fr btaining a CDL vary in each state. Fr a list f requirements fr yur state, lg nt Hiring a retired schl bus driver might be the easiest ptin. Check with an attrney r yur insurance agent t determine the best insurance cverage t prtect yu. (Nte that laws vary in each state.) In Ohi, fr example, Camelt Lanes frmed a separate cmpany, Camelt Transprtatin Inc., at a cst f $200 t mitigate liability frm the bwling center. They pay $2,500 per bus per year fr cmmercial liability insurance. 3. Market the prgram t lcal schls Meet with the Schl Principal. (Yu may als want t meet with the PTA grup.) Prepare a sample flyer with the schl s name n it. Target 1-2 schls that are clse t yur center t get yur prgram started. Call t schedule an appintment with the principal. Explain the benefits f bwling as an after schl activity: Bwling is a very ppular activity (#1 participatin sprt in America). It is a safe activity in a safe envirnment. Students get invlved in a lifetime sprt. Everyne can participate n ne sits n the bench! Students learn abut teamwrk, sprtsmanship, respnsibility and character. Explain ther benefits specific t yur prgram (help with hmewrk, awards, recgnitin, etc.). Explain the prgram specifics: Transprtatin Prgram schedule Prgram frms (sign up sheets, etc.) Stress that the center handles everything. 3 Offer t prvide free game passes that can be used as achievement awards fr math, reading r ther prgrams. After btaining apprval: 4. Execute! Ensure that: Get the student cunt fr each schl. Meet with the schl secretary t deliver flyers. Pick up the sign-up sheets regularly. Prepare a rster fr each schl. Finalize the details f transprtatin (where t meet students if yu are picking them up, r what time they will arrive at yur center if the schl is bussing them). all f yur staff members are familiar with the after schl prgram; caches are available if yu are prviding instructin; yu have a slid check-in and check-ut prcedure; and yur prgram is fun s that kids will want t cme back! Successful Prgrams Camelt Lanes, Bardman, Ohi. Camelt Lanes runs a very successful after schl bwling prgram. Equipped with several busses and a caching staff f ten, Camelt s prgram caters t 26 schls and brings ver 600 kids per week int the center! Camelt started with 2 schls and chartered busses. After seeing the ptential fr this prgram, they began purchasing their wn busses and reaching ut t mre schls. (Peppe Smith purchased ne bus n ebay.cm fr nly $1,500.) Peppe s after schl bwling staff cnsists f three retired teachers, early childhd educatin majrs, and a PBA prfessinal. Their knwledge f kids has prven invaluable t the prgram. Their prgram csts $6 per week and includes tw games f bwling, the use f shes, rund-trip transprtatin t and frm the schl, an end-f-seasn party, and awards fr each yungster. A snack can be purchased fr $1, and students get their chice f freshly-baked ckies, pizza, r a ht dg. Each snack cmes with milk r a sft drink. In additin t the $6 weekly fee ($6 x 600 students = $3,600 per week!), additinal revenue is generated by fd sales, birthday parties, schl fundraisers, and kids jining yuth/adult leagues. Camelt s after schl prgram nw generates ver $100,000 annually! Many f Camelt s marketing materials can be fund at the end f this chapter. Meadw Bwling Lanes, Prtland, Michigan. Meadw Bwling Lanes, a 12-lane center in Michigan, runs an 8- r 10-week bwling prgram fur days per week. The cst is $7 per persn per week and includes bwling, shes, and transprtatin t and frm schl. 4 required t pick their children up at the bwling center, which generates additinal revenue (parents ften have a snack r a drink while they re waiting fr their kids t finish.) Sempecks Elkrn Lanes, Elkhrn, Nebraska. Gateway Lanes ffers a prgram fr students in kindergarten thrugh 5 th grade. Bumper bwling is prvided fr beginners. Students meet each week n Tuesdays. They are picked up immediately after schl and returned t the schl at 5:20 p.m., r parents can pick up their children at Gateway Lanes. The cst is $6 per week and includes 2 games f bwling, awards and trphies, parties, transprtatin, and use f shes and ball. Parents must cmplete the fllwing frm fr their child(ren): Rse Bwl Lanes, Marshfield, WI. Rse Bwl Lanes gets apprval frm the schl district t distribute a flyer r pamphlet in the schl. (Once the schls are familiar with the prgram, they may nt require this step.) Once the prgram flyer is apprved, the schl prvides them with a rster f class enrllment, which allws them t make enugh flyers and grup them by class befre distributing them t the schls (remember, make it easy fr the schl!). Flyers are drpped ff at the schl district ffice after they are prepared. Rse Bwl als delivers reward cupns fr the schls t hand ut t students fr gd behavir. Students are given tw weeks t return the registratin frm t the center. Each schl is assigned a different day f the week fr its prgram, but if students have a cnflict, they can cme n anther schl s day. Each schl meets ne day per week. A schedule is develped at the beginning f the prgram fr all area schls. The fall sessin runs frm September thrugh December, and the spring sessin runs frm January thrugh April. Students are bussed t the center. The prgram begins at 3:00 r 3:15 p.m., and parents pick up their children at the bwling center between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. The first afternn is used as a registratin day. 5 cmfrtable when they arrive at the center. Once everyne is registered, Rse Bwl des a trivia sessin, cmplete with prizes. They then g ver basic rules. Rse Bwl runs tw sessins: 1. Kindergarten thrugh 6 th grade this grup is divided int K, 1, 2-3, 4-5, and 6. One r tw caches are assigned t each grup. The caches must have a wrking knwledge f bwling and be Level 1 Certified th thrugh 12 th grades Every three weeks, Rse Bwl hlds a fun day. Bwlers receive prizes fr strikes, spares, r achieving their average. Fr example, n Mardi Gras Day, students receive a set f beads fr each strike rlled. Awards are als given ut fr rlling games 25 pins ver their average and series 40 pins ver their average. There are tw cst ptins: 1. $5 per week includes bwling, shes, activities, and awards 2. $8 per week includes bwling, shes, activities, awards, and their chice f either a ball, bag, r shes at the end f the sessin. Fees may be paid weekly, mnthly, r fr the whle sessin. There are n fees fr missed weeks. When schl is nt in attendance (either scheduled r due t inclement weather), there is n bwling. A schedule is distributed n the first day. Plamr Lanes, Muscatine, IA. Playmr s prgram runs nce a week fr 8 weeks. The prgram begins at 3:45 p.m., and parents pick up their children between 5:30 and 5:45 p.m. The entire cst f the prgram is $48, preferably paid in advance. 6 The weekly schedule is: 3:45 4:00 Attendance 4:00 5:15 Instructin and bwling 5:15 5:30 Snack 5:30 5:45 Parents pick up Palmyra Bwling, Palmyra, PA. All elementary schls students, grades 1-5, are invited n a firstcme, first-served basis. There is a $12 registratin fee t cver transprtatin. The bus picks the children up at schl and brings them t a bwling center. The bus is clearly marked Bwling Bus. Parents pick up their kids at the bwling center n later than 5:30 p.m. They must check their children ut, and if they are sending smene else t pick their child up, arrangements must be made in advance.
