2 Short description of how to reach Wageningen and the hotel: Travelling from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to railway station Ede-Wageningen Schiphol station is directly underneath the airport. So you get on the train right beneath the departure lounge. Take a train to Ede-Wageningen. You can purchase your ticket at the ticket machine, or at the ticket office in the main hall of the station at the ground floor ( for a single ticket). The trains leave frequently from Schiphol Railway Station. Take a first train to Utrecht (do not take a train to Amsterdam Central Station!). In Utrecht, you change the train to destination Arnhem/Nijmegen. Leave this train at railway station Ede-Wageningen. Travelling time is approx. 1.5 hr. From Ede-Wageningen to Wageningen There are several possibilities to travel from the railway station Ede-Wageningen to Wageningen: by bus 88 (leaves every 10 to 15 minutes). It takes 10 minutes walk to the hotel from where the bus stops in Wageningen (see map) by taxi Travelling from Schiphol to Dordrecht (for those wishing to arrive early on May 24 th ) Take the Intercity train to railway station Dordrecht, direction Leiden Centraal. Trains leave Schiphol approx. every half hour. The optimum train to catch is the 09:15 arriving in Dordrecht at 10:16. Leave the train at Dordrecht station. The bus will be waiting there at 10:30 for those arriving on May 24th. Short description: The BioTrio farm is an organic farm with an area of about 200 ha, developed from a merger of three organic farms in The three farms have pioneered Seasonal Controlled Traffic Farming (SCTF) since 1999 and research was carried out to establish the effects of SCTF compared with normal field traffic. The main crops grown are spinach, carrot, onion, green beans, potato and wheat. Since 2002, SCTF has been implemented using a tractor with 3.15 m track width and equipped with RTK-DGPS and rubber tracks. 12:30 Lunch at farm BioTrio

4 13:30 15:00 Visit to farm Nieuw Bonaventura, Boendersweg 38, 3295 LB 's Gravendeel Owner: Leen Jan Reedijk Witloof chicory, also called French or Belgian endive Short description: The Nieuw Bonaventura farm is an organic farm (biodynamic), specializing in growing witloof chicory roots, cold storage of the roots, and planting the roots in dark forcing chambers to produce the final product witloof chicory. Other crops grown on the farm are potatoes and wheat. Leen Jan Reedijk purchased a JD 6830 this spring, adapted to 3.20 m track width by the local John Deere dealer (Stehouwer, Maasdam) and equipped with RTK-DGPS and 54 rear tyres. The main reasons for adopting SCTF on this farm are the expected improvement in soil quality and the better opportunities for high quality mechanical weed control. During this visit Rik van Bruggen of SBGuidance Innovatie, the supplier of the RTK-DGPS for this tractor, will present some of their special products such as RTK side shift control for implements and RTK guidance for mouldboard ploughs. 15:00 Departure to Wageningen 17:00 Meeting (summing up of day's visits and what we want to look for tomorrow) 19:00 Dinner and informal get together Friday, 25 May 7:30 Breakfast 8:00 Meeting - Harvest systems for high value crops within a CTF context - Strategies for CTF adoption in the light of our visits - Country representative reports on CTF - Research opportunities - Future programme: CTF conference? 5 11:00 Visit to the SBF farm Keij-van den Dries, Zwijnsweg 5, 8307 PP Ens Owners: Three organic farms, owned by partnership Keij-van den Dries, Anton van Vilsteren and partnership Van Strien Doggen, respectively, work together under SBF (foundation for soil protection in Flevoland). SBF is a cooperative facilitating the purchase and use of SCTF machinery on the farms. The partners in SBF farm a total area of 450 ha. We will visit the farm of partnership Keij-van den Dries, invited by Digni van den Dries. Short description: The farm (biodynamic) of Digni van den Dries has been in organic production for many years and adopted SCTF early in The main reason for adopting SCTF was for the improvement in soil quality, a good and healthy soil being particularly important in organic farming. Another key topic on the farm is achieving the best possible nutrient use efficiency. The crop rotation is seed potato, grass seed, chicory, summer grain, cabbage and summer grain again.
