1 Hydra XII: European Summer School 2016 Hydra Hydra is a small, cosmopolitan Greek island situated between Poros and Spetses. It s 37 nautical miles from the port of Piraeus (Athens) and is near the coast of the eastern Peloponnese. Hydra s streets are narrow, stone paved and vehicle free not even any bicycles. Donkeys and water taxis are the principal modes of transport. Athens Airport Athens Airport Eleftherios Venizelos is situated approximately 1h 1h30 from the port of Piraeus, where you catch the Hydrofoil to Hydra. Please take this into consideration when arranging your flights, and don t forget to allow time to clear immigration, find your bags and find your Hydrofoil. Travel to Piraeus from the Airport X96 Express Bus To catch this bus to Piraeus, you need to leave through exit door 5 (right out of customs, the last one at the end of the arrival hall). You need to purchase a ticket from the booth before boarding the bus. Tickets cost 5 Euros per person. The X96 bus and the bus stop are clearly marked in English and Greek with the destination (Piraeus). There's plenty of space for luggage and they go at least 3 times an hour, 23 hours a day. When you board please make sure you validate your ticket in the red box on the post behind the driver s seat. There are on the spot fines if an inspector finds un validated tickets! The journey time is approximately 1.5 hours. Bus timetable: Metro You can also travel by Metro to Piraeus. The train station is immediately adjacent to the airport and is accessible via a pedestrian bridge (on departure level). This takes 60 minutes, but involves a slightly longer walk at each end and one change. Take Metro line 3 to Monastiraki, and change there, taking Line 1 to Piraeus. You can buy one ticket for the entire journey (valid 90 minutes). Make sure you validate your ticket after you buy it. Trains run every 30 minutes, 7 days a week from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Network map: Line 3 timetable: Hydra XII: European Summer School /5

2 Taxis The taxi rank is outside exit door 3 but the queue during high season starts outside exit door 2. There are lots of taxis so the queue goes down really quickly. Yellow taxi prices vary depending upon the time of day, the number of passengers and the season, but you should budget for around 50 euros. This is a slightly quicker option than the bus (depending on the time of day & traffic). The Port of Piraeus The port of Piraeus is large and sprawling. If you take a taxi from the airport, ask for Piraeus and make sure the driver knows you're heading for Hydra. The Metro station is a 10 minutes walk away and the bus stop a few minutes only. Hydrafoils for Hydra departs from Gate 8. Piraeus Port map: Boats to Hydra The journey from Piraeus to Hydra is approximately hours. Hellenic Seaways operates their Flying Dolphins/Cats (hydrofoils) out of Piraeus. You'll find their ticket offices around the port. Tickets are received electronically or directly collected from the port. During the booking process, select Office at departure port at the question How would you like to receive your ticket? Tickets are ed with your booking confirmation. You can print them or collect from the Hellenic Seaways booths in front of the departure stand. See photo. It is not necessary to collect 45 mins before departure however leave enough time to find your departure gate and collect your tickets. We recommend that you arrive at Athens Airport before 12:00, noon on Sunday 11 September. We highly recommend that you book your ferry tickets as soon as possible, via the Hellenic seaways website. 3 The Venue The Summer School will be held at the Bratsera Hotel 5 minutes walk from the port. To get there from the port, follow the corner lane, down the left hand side of the Alpha Bank. At the Amalour bar, take the right fork. You will come across the Bratsera hotel on the left hand side. Summer School Programme The programme is posted on the main Summer School registration site and will be printed in the delegate book which you will receive upon arrival. The school begins with registration from 17:00 on Sunday 11 th September 2016, and closes with dinner on Saturday 17 th September Delegates are therefore expected to depart on Sunday 18 th September. 4 Accommodation Internal delegates from the projects ThymiStem, HumEnd, NeuroStemcellRepair, PluriMes and Intens: Shared accommodation will be reserved for you at the Bratsera Hotel or Erofili pension all in close proximity to the Bratsera Hotel. The project office will arrange your accommodation and send details closer to the time. / External Delegates: We can arrange shared accommodation for you (in twin/triple rooms with other summer school student of the same gender). You will be booked at the Erofili pension or at the Areti pension (same owner). If you prefer to make your own reservations we encourage you to make your bookings as early as possible. Note that the Bratsera hotel and Erofili pension are NOT available for booking by external delegates. Note that annex rooms are of the same standard as the hotel s, just across the lane. Ippokampos Hotel Across the square from the Bratsera Hotel, so very convenient, with a nice courtyard! 5 Meals Breakfast is usually served at your pension/hotel. You are free to make your own arrangements for meals not listed in the programme. Please note that only the opening and closing dinners and the barbeque boat trip are included in your registration fee. There are a couple of bakeries, fruit shops and supermarkets for picnic fare. For good inexpensive food search the back streets or walk down the coast. There are also plenty of cafés and bars the Ydronetta built into the canons on the west side of the port is a great spot for drinks and even night swimming! Leisure Activities During the Summer School, you have a few hours breaks in the afternoons. Below are some suggested activities: Swimming Beaches aren t sandy, but there are plenty of nice places to swim. Closest to town, there are swimming spots on the west side of the port. 1.5 km to the east is Mandraki, accessible on foot or by a short boat ride Further afield, you can take an organised trip or water taxi to the southwestern extreme of the island, and the bays of Bisti and Ayios Nikolaos. Walking/Running in Hydra Visit this site to view maps, directions and photographs of three circular walks in Hydra. Don t forget your walking shoes, sunscreen and a sunhat, as it can get very hot!
