The farm: Placed in the middle of Sealand 250 hektar 5000 pigs kg produced Soiltype: JB 6 (app. 14% clay, 14 silt, 45% fine sand, 27% sand)

The principles of Conservation Agriculture (CA): - Minimum soil disturbance - Permanent soil cover - Crop rotation

After 11 years with min-tillage the soil has much better structure, drainage and stability Harvest after 7 days with rain in 2010 Bean harvest September 2011 (Beans was Direct drilled)

100% Direct Drilling from summer The worst conditions possible - The wettest harvest - Wet soil for drilling WOSR - Late drilling of Wheat

KIS: Keep It Simple Simple machinery! Straw Rake also a great help against slugs! Drill with special tines from Canada Sprayer pesticides and fertilizer Fixed tramlines in RTK system

25 cm. row distance 4 cm bands 1½ opener with liquid fertilizer

Problems with minimum-tillage: Nitrogen immobilisation I realised: Seed has to be placed under the straw in clean soil

Problems with minimum-tillage: Nitrogen immobilisation Suddenly the OSR was better established

Introduced fixed crop rotation: Winter oil seed rape Winter wheat (followed by cover crop) Spring Beans Winter Wheat (followed by cover crop) Spring Barley Not the same crop on a field in two following years! This means healthy crops especially wheat (DTR) N can be moved from spring barley to winter wheat = better wheat yields

Let the nature do the job! Biological tillage

Establishing cover crops always before spring crops! Drilled direct after the combine Mix with legumes 5 different species

Terra Gold mix in the beginning of October 2011

Photo by night with 11 Lumbricus Terrestis on 0.25 m2 Biological tillage

Biological tillage makes the soil much more stable 3% Carbon / 6 % humus Rainworms Cover crops Question: Is a 100% CTF system nescessary!

DD Spring barley after cover crops where are the combine tracks?
