Whether you are in full-time employment in an allied profession or seeking a complete career change, this is a well-established programme that prepares you for individual accreditation with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). It has a 15-year track record balancing the demands of Level 7 academic rigor with the theoretical, clinical and personal development requirements of the professional body. The programme prepares our students for future employment correlating with market forces. Counselling and psychotherapy is a demanding discipline. It requires excellence in education and training, combined with personal resilience and commitment. Our curriculum is regularly adapted to reflect the societal, political and economic context of counselling as well as the changing trends and regulations of the wider profession. Our tutors are all practising clinicians and committed to a learning environment designed to support, challenge and inspire you in a discipline which demands as much from you emotionally as it does academically. The programme is structured to provide a progressive, cumulative learning experience across three years and is viewed as an integrated whole rather than as fragmented components. You will engage with the three core elements of the programme (theory and skills, professional and personal development, and research and clinical practice) in increasing depth during each successive year. Effective counselling is seen as a dynamic synthesis of these core elements. Furthermore, you will learn to develop the principles of the practitionerresearcher into all elements of the curriculum.

4 Career opportunities On completing this programme, you will have all the training required for individual accreditation with the BACP. You will be able to seek employment in a wide range of counselling contexts as an independent practitioner working towards final accreditation. Possible settings include GP surgeries and hospital out-patient units; schools, colleges and universities; employee assistance programmes; support teams in prisons, community centres and drug rehabilitation centres, or private practice. Teaching and assessment The programme is designed to provide you with an opportunity to develop an individual and critically reflexive approach to counselling within a participatory learning environment. Teaching and learning comprises both didactic and interactive lectures, clinical case discussion groups, personal development groups, and student-led projects. Formative assessment is continuous, with both verbal and written development feedback. Written summative assessments are submitted regularly throughout each year, addressing the core elements. Professional recognition We are accredited as a training provider by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. Students successfully completing all three years of the programme are deemed to have completed a BACPaccredited course. 5 Key facts Attendance: 3 years part-time Entry requirements: You should have: An undergraduate degree at 2.1 or above. PLUS some knowledge of counselling skills AND experience of working with people in a helping capacity. Applications are welcomed throughout the year. You will be expected to attend an interview and submit a separate personal statement of at least 500 words in support of your interest in pursuing counselling training. Applicants with suitable prior learning may seek direct entry. Applicants can gain exemption from three of the courses (Year 1), thereby completing the programme in two years. If you wish to apply for direct entry, you will be required to present a portfolio demonstrating successful completion of counselling training at equivalent postgraduate certificate level. If you were educated in a language other than English and/or in a country where English speakers are in a minority, you should have a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill) or an equivalent rating in another Secure English Language Test. How to apply: Applications to postgraduate programmes should be made online at There is no closing date for applications to postgraduate programmes, but many fill up quickly, so you are advised to apply early. You do not have to wait for first degree or other examination results.
