Introduction Due to the success of our MSc Emergency Medicine programme portfolio, we can now offer three new routes through the degree. So whether you are an emergency consultant, paediatric emergency physician, senior emergency nurse or a military emergency physician or nurse, this course will enable you to broaden your knowledge and skills, whilst supporting your career development.

2 MMU1385 Emergency Med HPSC v5 11/07/ :41 Page 3 Designed entirely by physicians and nurses working in emergency care, our programme can be tailored to your specific focus and three of these routes are outlined below. Teaching is on-line, and based around a virtual hospital with problem based learning, online lectures, tutorials, web links and online discussions with your colleagues and fellow students. The course is made up of two phases. Phase One provides a variety of core and elective modules from which you can select a personalised route for academic assessment. The units depend on the route you wish to follow and the elective units chosen build on this to explore particular interests. Units are offered on a rolling programme so over the course of your study, almost all units are likely to be available. Students are able to choose to study to Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma level or to continue their studies to achieve a Masters level qualification. To be considered for entry to this programme, candidates must currently be working as either a registered medical practitioner or nurse in an area of urgent or emergency care and successfully complete an interview with one of the admissions tutors, (usually by telephone). Students for whom English is a second language must hold IELTS (language test) and achieve the Academic Standard at 7.0 or above, prior to admissions onto the programme Other specific practice requirements are in place for Paediatric and Military Emergency Medicine routes. The PGCert Emergency Management has been developed for those senior staff in emergency departments who may have completed their professional training but want a postgraduate qualification which reflects their management function. Students on this route will be required to undertake three management units: Human Resource Management in the Emergency Department; Legal Aspects of Emergency Medicine; and Managing the Emergency Department. If you choose the Education route though this programme you will bring 60 credits to the programme in the form of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at level 7. You will complete the core requirements for Phase 1 of this programme and will be able to exit at that point with an award of a PGDip Emergency Medicine (with Education) or proceed to Phase 2 to be considered for the award of MSc Emergency Medicine (with Education). Students who wish to focus on Major Incident Management will bring 60 credits to the programme in the form of a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Incident Command and undertake 60 credits of core units, exiting with a postgraduate diploma or continuing to phase 2 of the programme. Where will I study? This course is managed online. The course team and library and other campus facilities are based at Elizabeth Gaskell Campus, which is situated on Hathersage Road opposite the Manchester Royal Infirmary.

7 MMU1385 Emergency Med HPSC v5 11/07/ :41 Page 8 Phase 2 Phase 2 Project 60 Credits Mandatory Core Unit The academic and professional requirements for acceptance onto single units within the programme are that the student must: possess a relevant professional qualification (which may not necessarily be as a registered medical practitioner); be practising or have practiced in an area of urgent or emergency care; have at least 2 years practical experience; have evidence of recent study within the higher education framework. Phase two is a dissertation, requiring a presentation of a substantial practitioner project in the field of emergency medicine in an area of your choice.
