3 THE ROLE OF THE GRADE C Learning Mentor Job Description for: Hours of work Responsible to: Learning Mentor Pastoral - Behaviour & Attendance Team 37 hours per week Monday - Thursday Friday Term time only weeks per year Behaviour/Attendance Support Manager Behaviour and Attendance Team Member Role: 1. Assist with the implementation of student attendance/behaviour support plans, to ensure acceptable pattern of behaviour and levels of attendance are achieved 2. Implement small group work with identified students to improve behaviour and attendance and engage students in learning to raise student attainment 3. Be proactive in facilitating restorative processes within the school 4. Maintain student behaviour/attendance records and provide relevant information to Heads of House, Attendance/Behaviour Manager, and other appropriate staff. 5. Assist with the investigation of all incidents, including the taking of statements, and ensure consistency. 6. Receive telephone messages on behalf of Heads of House and direct them where necessary to ensure good home/school communication. 7. Provide cover for other members of the Behaviour & Attendance team when and where necessary 8. Maintain communication with parents/carers when students have been identified as truanting. 9. Supervise after school detentions on a rota basis 10. Support the school ALERT system by responding and attending timetabled sessins in Yellow Room.
4 Attend meetings (PSP/CAF/EWO) when requested by the Behaviour & Attendance Manager or Head of House. 12. Implement instructions from designated Heads of House to assist them in managing behaviour in their House group, including meeting with parents/carers. 13. Attend meetings with parents and carers in community venues and home settings to discuss Behaviour and Attendance issues. 14. Perform such administrative or other tasks as directed by the Head of House/Behaviour Manager. 15. Undertake such other duties appropriate to the grade and character of the work as may be reasonably required
5 Behaviour and Attendance Team Learning Mentor Person Specification The Behaviour and Attendance Team play a key role in supporting the pastoral needs of all children at Longhill High School. To become part of the team you will need these essential characteristics, skills and qualities: Behaviour and Attendance Team Learning Mentor will: 1. enjoy working with children and young people 2. have good literacy skills to undertake a variety of tasks. A good knowledge of ICT, including the schools, would be an advantage 2. be able to relate well to children and adults, often on behalf of the Head of House/Head Teacher, e.g. dealing with visitors, passing information / messages to other staff, providing advice 3. use some analytical, judgmental, creative and developmental skills, e.g. when monitoring student progress using school data 4. have sensitivity, understanding, excellent communication skills and a respect for confidentiality 5. ability to handle a steep learning curve and to prioritise tasks within the time available 6. be able to deal with more complex queries and know when to refer to more senior staff 7. be able to establish constructive and positive relationships with students and interact with them according to individual need 8. attend appropriate meetings and training courses to evolve knowledge and enrich everyday practice 9. be able to work constructively as part of a team and to understand school roles and responsibilities and your own position within these 8. act as a member of the school staff around the school, adopting a general role of care for the students, the building and resources. 10. have a friendly, warm and professional nature with the ability to handle a degree of responsibility 11. a sense of humour and the ability to use this effectively and appropriately with students and staff.
6 Behaviour and Attendance Department (Behaviour Support Team) The Behaviour Support Team plays a vital role within Longhill High School in promoting the ethos of the school and supporting students and staff. The team consists of five Learning Mentors (Behaviour Support Assistants) one Attendance Officer and one Administration Assistant and is managed by the Behaviour Manager. The team has evolved over a number of years to meet the changing needs of the school and the role of the Learning Mentor s role is demanding but rewarding. Relationships are not only built with students but with parents to try to ensure the best outcomes. The school operates a vertical system across Years 8 to 11 and has five Heads of House. The Behaviour Support Team works closely with a particular house and supports the Head of House. The team work to support students with finding solutions to issues that they may be encountering at school to promote positive behaviour for learning and increased engagement. Use of Restorative Justice is used at all levels of incident to find resolutions. The Behaviour Support Team plays a pivotal role in whole school attendance. They monitor the attendance of students within their allocated House, make first day absence calls, run attendance groups and are involved in various strategies to help students improve their attendance at school. The team also provide the Heads of House with data to identify where school action is necessary. The school is supported with ensuring good attendance by Education Welfare Officers who are employed by the school. The team support staff by responding to calls for assistance, ALERTS, and removing students from the class to enable learning for others to continue. The students are taken to reflect upon what had gone wrong. The Behaviour Support Team works closely with the Inclusion Department and is line managed by the Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion and Behaviour Support.
