1 JOB DESCRIPTION- DEPUTY NURSERY MANAGER Location: Hours: Holiday: Salary: Benefits: Hopscotch Nursery 40 per week 30 days per annum inclusive of 8 statutory holidays 18,000-20,000 per annum (dependent on location) Non-contributory pension Private medical insurance Requirements A full and relevant Level 3 qualification as defined by the Children s Workforce Development Council Three satisfactory relevant references Satisfactory disclosure check The relevant skills to support the management of a children s nursery within the ethos, implementation and legal requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Duties The Deputy Manager will go about their duties with honesty and integrity and ensure the nursery needs are always met and take precedence. Support of the Manager The Deputy Manager's main role is to support the Manager in all aspects of Nursery matters. They must be conversant with all Hopscotch Policies and Procedures, the Job Description of the Manager and all other staff, and must be able to manage the nursery is the absence of the Manager. They must work as part of the Staff Team and liaise between the Staff and the Manager. Statutory Requirements The Deputy must work with the Manager to ensure the nursery complies with the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework. They must ensure good practice as set out in the EYFS Practice Guidance and they must ensure compliance with all relevant statutory regulations, for example, Health and Safety Law and Employment Law. When deputising, the Deputy Manager must execute the responsibilities of a Nursery Manager according to all lawful and ethical standards. The Manager has responsibility for the nursery, including out-of-hours, if necessary. Attendance The Deputy must ensure that a Manager or Deputy is present in the nursery at all times during opening hours. The Manager and Deputy must cover each other s duties should either of them be absent. Due to the seniority of the role, it is expected that the Deputy will have high level of attendance. Attitude At all times the Deputy Manager must display a high level of enthusiasm, loyalty and motivation and must adhere to the correct policies and ethos of Hopscotch. They must promote equal opportunities for all. They must at all times promote the good name of Hopscotch. They must ensure their appearance is neat and tidy at all times, is appropriate for their status and that they abide by the correct dress code. They must be a role model of good practice.

2 The Children The Deputy Manager must at all times ensure the safety, care, welfare and happiness of the children in the Nursery. They must ensure all children have access to resources, equipment, activities and learning opportunities to reach their full development and potential. The Deputy Manager must be aware any children in their care with special needs (including special educational needs and disabilities) and is proactive in ensuring appropriate action is taken to promote the welfare and development of those children within the nursery. The Deputy Manager must ensure that all adults working and looking after children in the nursery are able to put the appropriate procedures for the Safeguarding of Children into practice. Administration It is the Manager and/or Deputy s responsibility to ensure that the nursery operates at all times during opening hours, that childcare is available to parents as agreed, and there is a contingency plan for all unplanned events, emergencies or extraordinary weather conditions. The Deputy Manager must support the efficient and organised administration of nursery matters. They must support and assist the Manager in maintaining the organisation of the running of the nursery and be well conversant with the policies and procedures of Hopscotch in order to do this. They must ensure sensible employment of the staff throughout the day, by way of staff rotas. They must be able to ensure staff ratios and the supply of bank staff to cover holidays and sickness where applicable. They must ensure efficient financial use of all resources including staff and cover staff. The Deputy Manager must be able to organise the Keyperson system and staff ratios concerning grouping of children when asked to do so by the Manager or Operations Director. Keyperson The Deputy Manager will have a group of children assigned to them as Keyperson and they must provide all the necessary duties pertaining to the welfare of this group of children (see job description of Senior Nursery Nurse). Collection of Fees The Deputy Manger must promote good practice of regular payment of fees. They must be supportive in the Manager's programmes for debt collecting and must maintain payment records honestly and accurately, and ensure the safety of money in their care. Premises The Deputy Manager must at all times ensure the cleanliness and tidiness of the nursery, and regulate heat and light as appropriate. They must report any areas in need of maintenance and also monitor the equipment and facilities of the nursery, and ensure the correct atmosphere. Parents In consultation with the Manager, the Deputy must strive to develop loyalty and commitment of parents, and build a relationship of trust with them and ensure their satisfaction with the nursery service. The Manager must ensure the Key Person practice is regularly communicated to parents and parents are invited to play an active role in their children s care and learning. They must also meet parents reasonable needs as appropriate. They must ensure communication of policies and good practice to parents, and make sure they are aware of new developments. In consultation with the Manager, the Deputy must be proactive and seek to resolve parents concerns and complaints promptly. They must receive their fees payments.

3 Early Years Foundation Stage and Children s Activities In consultation with the Manager and Early Years Professional (if applicable), the Deputy must oversee the planning, organisation and smooth running of the children's activities in consultation with the group leaders (and/or EYP if applicable). The Deputy must ensure the supply of appropriate resources. They must ensure the activities are appropriate for the children s developmental stage, monitor their content, make assessments of their worth and that appropriate records are kept with regard to Ofsted. The staff and activities must achieve high quality teaching and learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. The Deputy must ensure the economic use of resources and materials Staff The Deputy Manager must provide leadership for the staff. They must maintain a professional manner at all times providing a good role model for staff during work hours and out of work hours. They must maintain a professional manager s distance from staff during work hours and out of work hours. The Deputy must ensure staff abide by all Hopscotch policies and procedures. The Deputy must ensure the statutory staff ratios are met at all times and help organise the supply of bank staff to cover staff absences within the financial budget allowed. In consultation with the Manager, the Deputy must at all times monitor the staff in terms of their appearance and attitude and provide a good role model. They must ensure they abide by the staff rules. They must provide motivation, training and discipline. They must ensure the smooth running and distribution of duties via rotas, and monitor holidays and sickness absences in consultation with the Manager or in the Manager's absence. The Deputy will be involved in the recruitment, induction, training, counselling and disciplining of staff. Records The Deputy must ensure that nursery records are kept honestly and accurately. They should organise and oversee the maintenance of nursery records (registers, accident book, group files etc). Nursery Viability and Sales In consultation with the Manager, the Deputy must market the nursery and sell sessions as appropriate with a view to increasing and maintaining populations to 100%, and make the nursery as viable as possible. The Deputy should support the Manager in managing nursery budgets carefully and ensure efficient use of nursery resources, for example, bank staff, consumables and equipment. New Bookings and Visitors to the Nursery The Deputy must accommodate visitors and show them around the nursery with a view to selling sessions. They must take new bookings and collect deposits. They must also be available to accommodate visitors from outside agencies and deal with their queries. The Deputy must ensure the correct information and ethos of Hopscotch is conveyed to all visitors, and they must ensure good impressions to all people who come through the door. At all times the Deputy must be courteous and helpful. Planning and Development The Deputy must attend regular nursery staff meetings at least every 4-6 six weeks out of normal hours of work and also Management Team meetings, and be involved with training matters. They are expected to attend relevant events, meetings and training courses when necessary. They must show initiative when considering new policies and ideas.

4 DEPUTY NURSERY MANAGER - PERSON SPECIFICATION A full and relevant Level 3 qualification as defined by the Children s Workforce Development Council. Two satisfactory relevant references Satisfactory Enhanced DBS Disclosure Relevant skills in working with groups of children aged 0-5 years. The ability to support the Nursery Manager in all aspects of the efficient and organised administration of Nursery matters. A willingness to learn the policies and procedures of Hopscotch and to abide by the staff rules. An excellent understanding of children's development, their needs and the provision of positive play. An ability to provide a high quality, integrated early education and childcare service which complies with the Early Years Foundation Stage. The skills to supervise staff and be involved in the recruitment, induction, training, counselling and disciplining of staff. An ability to work with parents and outside agencies to ensure the individual learning requirements of children with particular needs, disabilities or those who require additional support. A commitment to the theory and practice of equal opportunities. An awareness of health and safety issues relating to the provision of daycare. An ability to work on own initiative and an ability to supervise other staff members. An ability to communicate effectively with parents and build a relationship of trust with them. An ability to produce high quality reports/documents as appropriate. A willingness to work as part of and contribute positively to the staff team. A willingness to adhere to the Hopscotch dress code. An ability to provide an excellent role model of good practice to all other members of staff An ability to support the Nursery Management in creating a happy and welcoming nursery setting. An ability and willingness to attend staff meetings, training courses and nursery parents' evenings as directed. Possess or willing to undertake recent training in First Aid, Child Protection, SEN and other subjects as appropriate.
