3 Certificate III in Aged Care Course outline The purpose of this training course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to provide care to older people in a range of settings within a plan of care, under direction and supervision. This qualification addresses work primarily in residential facilities under direct or regular guidance within clearly defined organisation guidelines and service plans. Upon successful completion of the course participants will be issued with the nationally recognised qualification Certificate III in Aged Care (CHC30208). IRT strongly recommends completion of this qualification so that clients and residents are cared for at a best practice level. Course Duration: The qualification is run over a 48 week period with learners required to complete on the job assessments and course work and attend face to face classes. Class time is 4 hours per week at a designated class site and over 4 semesters. 4 Entry Requirements: There are no pre-requisite entry requirements for this course What is a traineeship? Trainees are full-time or permanent part-time employees of IRT and have an approved training contract with the Department of Education and Training to undertake both on the job and face to face training to gain a nationally recognised qualification. What are the requirements and responsibilities of the trainee? You are required to complete your course within a 12 month period from commencement of class time. If you do not complete, you will be required to re-enrol with the College and a re-enrolment fee of $436 will apply. As a trainee you are required to attend all scheduled face to face classes and inform the facilitator and your manager if you cannot attend. What are the requirements and responsibilities of the employer? The trainee is required to work a minimum of 15 hours per week including a face to face class of 4 hours per week unless the trainee is under 17 and in this case the requirement is 25 hours per week in NSW and 15 in the ACT. There are on the job assessments that will need to be supervised and completed in order to be deemed competent before their qualification can be given. These assessments will be coordinated by the course facilitator and the Care Manager. The Role of a Supervisor As a supervisor you will act as a role model and coach to the trainee. The trainee will look to you for guidance and help in learning to do their job. You also have responsibilities to talk to the College about the trainees progress and any issues you may be experiencing whilst monitoring the on-the-job performance. 5 Types of Trainees New Entrant trainees are new employees or employees who have worked for IRT less than 3 months full-time or less than 12 months pare-time or casual. IRT s Australian Apprenticeship Centre determines the eligibility of employees for New Worker Trainees when you submit the Eligibility Form during the sign-up process. The eligibility of employees to participate in Traineeships and the employers entitlement to Incentives is generally determined by the following criteria: the employee must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident; and the employee cannot already hold a formal qualification; and for new Worker Traineeships the employee must be registered as a Trainee within 3 months of starting work. Longer periods apply for part-time employees. Existing Worker trainees are employees that have worked for IRT more than 3 months full-time or more than 12 months part-time. Please note: Certificate III in Aged Care is only available to New Entrant Trainees as funded placement. Existing workers will attract additional fees and charges. Australian Government Incentives Trainees may be eligible for these incentives if they have not completed a prior qualification deemed to make them ineligible by the Department. The incentives are paid 3 months after the date of commencement provided the trainee is progressing and also upon completion of the traineeship. Incentives of up to $4000 can be paid per trainee and are provided to the employment site to assist with education and training costs for the trainee. Eligibility is determined by completing the eligibility form and forwarding to IRT College. Timeframes The learner will commence training with the RTO within 3 months of the commencement of the date of the Training Contract. The trainee will then have 12 months to complete the required training with the RTO. Should the learner have some difficulty completing in the timeframe required, a request may be made to the College for an extension, however re-enrollment fees may apply. Learner Progress The Learning & Development Coordinator will monitor learner progression based on the information provided by the course Facilitators and identify any learners at risk of noncompletion. Intervention measures will be put in place and a learning strategy where necessary to further assist the learner. 5

6 RTO Orientation On this day the students will meet with College representatives and facilitators and complete all required enrolment documentation and commence their training with the College. It is essential that all students attend an orientation prior to attending class. Copies of photo identification will be required on the day and payment of any course fees are also payable on the day. All course materials and Learner handbook will be given to the students on the day of orientation. Special Note to employers: It is a requirement of the IRT College that in order to undertake a traineeship and commence training with the RTO you must have an approved Training Contract with the Department of Education and Training. This means that the trainee must have signed a training contract and had it approved by the department before being placed in class. If the training contract number has not been provided to the IRT College prior to the commencement date provided on the Confirmation of Placement letter the student s manager will be contacted by the College and the orientation date postponed. 6

7 Suspension of traineeships Apprenticeships and traineeships can be suspended or partially suspended to reduce the working hours, providing that the employer and the apprentice/trainee agree. Suspensions may be necessary due to lack of work or the need for either party to take an extended period of time off as a result of injury or illness. A suspension or partial suspension is generally for a period of three months but may be extended or reduced. A suspension application form is available for this purpose from IRT College Admin. The form should be submitted to the State Training Centre within 14 days of commencement of the suspension period. Signed copies must also be kept by the parties. How to sign-up a trainee (Employer Information). Note to Managers: Please ensure that all Trainees are given a copy of the Traineeship Flyer prior to them completing an enrolment application. 1 Trainee and Manager to complete the Enrolment Application and Eligibility Form and forward to IRT College. 2 Eligibility will be assessed and the manager informed of the result usually within 7 days. 3 Manager complete sign-up request and forward to IRT College. 4 Keep originals of documentation for site records 5 IRT College will forward the sign-up request to the Apprenticeship centre to register that the trainee sign-up needs to take place. 6 Apprenticeship centre will contact the site (Care Manager or designated site contact) to organise a date, time and location for trainee sign up to take place. 7 IRT will proceed to enroll the student and place in class once the sign-up has taken place. The student will receive confirmation of placement from the College with attendance details and requirements and the manager will be notified. 8 RTO/ College notified of sign up and TCID received and placement confirmed by Admin. 9 Student attends RTO Orientation and enrolment. Course materials and documentation will be received by the student at this point and the training plan completed. 10 Sign-up and enrolment complete. Student commences qualification 7
