1 30 th Annual Hawkeye Sports Medicine Symposium Provided by: University of Iowa Sports Medicine Center, Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation, University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. Thursday and Friday December 11 12, 2014 Coralville Marriott Hotel and Conference Center 300 East 9th Street Coralville, Iowa Purpose The program is designed to present health care professionals with current knowledge about diagnosis, management, and prevention of a variety of injuries commonly incurred in sports participation and to emphasize uniquely influential factors that must be addressed in the provision of the highest quality of care to the competitive athlete. We will present specific performance improvement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of detectable problems that exist in young athletes. In addition to lectures, interactive discussions will be offered to enhance the participant s understanding of the topics presented.
2 General Information Intended Audience The format of the symposium allows it to be attractive to individuals with a variety of backgrounds and interests. Orthopaedic surgeons, family physicians, team physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, physician assistants, nurses, coaches, and persons involved with emergency medicine services are encouraged to attend. Objectives Upon completion of this program, the learner should be able to: Discuss evidence-based best practice guidelines for preventing and treating overuse injuries and apply these principles in practice. Explain current guidelines on preventing and managing burnout in youth sports and apply these principles in practice. Appraise the evidence on recovery aids and provide guidance to athletes and practitioners based on this evidence. Identify key factors in the decision-making process on return to safe sports participation after a range of common injuries and employ these evidencebased principles own practice. Describe common pediatric sports injuries and myths in youths sports that can be applied in their own practices. Explain practical evidence-based principles related to preventing and treating primary and second ACL injuries. Explain the etiology of adhesive capsulitis and evidence-based best practice guidelines for treating adhesive capsulitis and conditions where joint mobility is a concern. Describe surgical and rehabilitation techniques for treating a range of cartilage lesions seen by orthopaedic surgeons. Discuss the theory related to core strengthening and describe core strength exercises used by sports rehabilitation and strength and conditioning experts. Symposium Location The symposium will be held at the Coralville Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, 300 East 9th Street, Coralville, Iowa, Phone or ; Fax Registration Fees Registration fees include: CME and CEU recording, registration, instruction, educational materials, continental breakfast, refreshment breaks, Friday s lunch, and hotel parking. All but $35 of the registration fee is refundable if the inability to attend the Symposium is made known on or before Thursday, December 4. No refunds will be made for later notification. Carver College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 11.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Nurse: This program is offered in cooperation with the University of Iowa College of Nursing, an Iowa Board of Nursing Approved Provider, number 1. Full time attendance will award 13.8 contact hours. Program number has been assigned. Family Physician: Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending. Athletic Trainer: The University of Iowa is recognized by the Board of Certification, Inc. to offer continuing education for Certified Athletic Trainers. This program has been approved for a maximum of 11.5 hours of Category A continuing education. Certified Athletic Trainers are responsible for claiming only those hours actually spent participating in the CE activity. EMS: Application for CEHs has been filed with the University of Iowa Health Care Emergency Medical Services Learning Resources Center (EMSLRC). Determination of credit is pending. Physical Therapist: A certificate of attendance will be sent to you after the Symposium. This letter of certification can be used to submit to your licensing board for re-certification. Syllabus Materials Course syllabus materials will be ed as a link to registered participants prior to the meeting. A flash drive will also be available the day of the meeting. Please note that print copies of the syllabus will not be provided. You are encouraged to download or print materials you wish to use in advance. You may also bring your laptop, however there will not be electrical outlets so you will need to run your laptop off the battery. Marriott Hotel Accommodations A limited number of rooms have been reserved at the Coralville Marriott Hotel. Room rates are $109 plus taxes.
