10 Introducton Operatng safety Operatng safety Warnng G Warnng G Warnng G Any alteratons made to electronc components and the software can cause malfunctons. The rado, amplfer, satellte rado*, CD changer*, navgaton module* and telephone* are nterconnected. Therefore, when one of the components s not operatonal or has not been removed/ replaced properly, the functon of other components may be mpared. Ths condton mght serously mpar the operatng safety of your vehcle. We recommend that you have any servce work on electronc components carred out by an authorzed Mercedes-Benz Center. In order to avod dstracton whch could lead to an accdent, the drver should enter system settngs wth the vehcle at a standstll and operate the system only when road, weather and traffc condtons permt. Bear n mnd that at a speed of just 30 mph (approxmately 50 km/h), your vehcle s coverng a dstance of 44 feet (approxmately 14 m) every second. COMAND supples you wth nformaton to help you select your route more easly and gude you convenently and safely to your destnaton. For safety reasons, we encourage the drver to stop the vehcle n a safe place before answerng or placng a call, or consultng the COMAND screen to read navgatonal maps, nstructons, or downloaded nformaton. Whle the navgaton system provdes drectonal assstance, the drver must reman focused on safe drvng behavor, ncludng attenton to traffc and street sgns, and should utlze the system's audo cues whle drvng. The navgaton system does not supply any nformaton on stop sgns, yeld sgns, traffc regulatons or traffc safety rules. Ths always remans your personal responsblty when you drve. DVD maps do not cover all areas nor all routes wthn an area. 9

Never wpe the CD n a crcular moton. Do not use rubbng alcohol or solvents to clean CDs. Do not expose the CDs to heat or drect sunlght. Do not wrte or put labels on CDs Tps on creatng MP3 CDs CDs, software and hardware for wrtng audo data to CDs are wdely avalable. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that COMAND wll be able to play every user-wrtten CD. Problems may be encountered durng playback of user-wrtten CDs wth a storage capacty of more than 700 MB. These CDs do not meet vald standards as of ths prntng. Permssble MP3 CDs In MP3 mode COMAND can read CD-R and CD-RW CDs. Permssble fle systems The permtted fle system s ISO9660/Jolet for CD-R and CD-RW. Mult sesson CDs Wth mult sesson CDs, the content of the frst sesson determnes how COMAND treats the CD. 59

61 Audo MP3 operaton For example, f the frst sesson contans data n audo CD format and the second sesson contans data n MP3 format, COMAND wll treat the CD as a conventonal audo CD. Fle structure When creatng a MP3 CD, you can organze MP3 tracks nto folders. A folder can also contan addtonal folders. The root drectory may have a maxmum of 255 entres n total. (folders or tracks) A CD may have a maxmum of 255 folders n total. A maxmum of 255 tracks are permssble per folder. Mathematcally a maxmum of tracks would result. However, ths amount s usually not reached snce MP3 requres approx. 1 MB storage per mnute recorded. Track names and folder names When creatng an MP3 CD, you can assgn names to the MP3 tracks and folders. COMAND uses these names n MP3 mode for the correspondng dsplay. Please note the followng when assgnng folder and track names: Per folder a maxmum of 1800 characters are avalable for ttle and folder names combned. Exceedng ths number, COMAND cannot dsplay all ttles and folders. Track and folder names must contan at least 1 character. Track names may contan up to ffty characters. If a name exceeds ths character lmt, COMAND wll not be able to dsplay t n full. Track names must have the extenson mp3. A perod must appear between the track name and the fle extenson. Example of a correct track name: Track1.mp3 In the example, the track name contans sx characters, followed by a perod and the fle extenson mp3. Empty folders or folders contanng data other than MP3 tracks wll not be dsplayed by COMAND. 60

62 Audo MP3 operaton If MP3 fles are stored n the root drectory tself, the root drectory also counts as a folder. COMAND wll then dsplay the root drectory name as a folder name. COMAND does not support ID3 tags. Tps on creatng MP3 tracks Permssble MP3 formats COMAND supports the MPEG1 Audo Layer 3 format. In everyday speech, ths format has been replaced by the desgnaton MP3. Permssble bt and scan rates Fxed and varable bt rates up to 320 kbps. Scan rates from 24 khz - 48 khz It s recommended to use MP3 tracks wth a bt rate of128 kbps or hgher and wth a scan rate of 44.1 khz or hgher. Lower rates may mpar qualty. Ths s partcularly true f the sound functon LOGIC7 Surround has been actvated. Tps on copyrght The musc tracks that you can create for play back n MP3 mode are generally copyrght-protected under applcable nternatonal and natonal laws. In many countres, the reproducton of copyrghted materal s not permtted, even f only for personal use, wthout the express pror consent of the copyrght holder. Please check the current copyrght laws for your country and comply wth them. These restrctons do not apply for example to your own compostons and recordngs, or for recordngs for whch authorzaton has been obtaned from the copyrght holder. 61
