INTRODUCE unt 3. In unt 3, we ll dscuss how to recognze the man types of acute and chronc njures. We ll watch a DVD segment that covers - causes of njury, - acute njures, and - chronc njures. We ll do an actvty n whch you learn to dentfy causes of njury. B Types of Injures and How They Occur (9 mnutes) Actvty 3.1 Types of Injures REFER coaches to Actvty 3.1 Types of Injures, page 10, n the Sport Frst Ad Classroom Study Gude.

3 Types of Injures 83 INTRODUCE the actvty. Knowng how an njury occurred and whether t occurred suddenly or over tme may help you to correctly dentfy an njury and respond wth approprate frst ad care. In ths actvty, you ll fll out a table as we watch a DVD segment. REVIEW the actvty resources. You ll use the table, Examples of Injures That Affect Specfc Body Tssues, that follows the actvty nstructons and actvty outcome n the study gude. EPLAIN the actvty nstructons. 1. Work ndvdually. 2. As you watch the DVD segment, lsten for a. what types of njures affect dfferent body tssues and b. whether an njury s acute or chronc. 3. Fll n the table as you watch the DVD segment. a. In the thrd column, wrte f the njury occurs suddenly and s the result of a specfc njury mechansm, wrte f the njury develops over a perod of several weeks and s typcally caused by repeated njury, or wrte or f both could be the case. For example, bones can sustan closed fractures. Closed fractures occur suddenly, so you would

When you re done, you should have completed the Injury and Type of njury columns n the table. We ll revew the actvty outcome after watchng the DVD segment. ASK for questons about the actvty. PLAY DVD segment 2, Types of Injures and How They Occur. INSTRUCTOR NOTE: The DVD wll stop automatcally at the end of the segment. INSTRUCTOR NOTE: Your copy of the actvty outcome follows on page 85. Coaches mght not lst the njures n the same order as shown n your nstructor gude. It s more mportant that they have lsted the correct njures and correspondng type of njury (acute versus chronc) for each tssue n the table. After pausng the DVD, CONDUCT the actvty debrefng as follows: 1. TELL coaches to correct ther answers durng the debrefng so that they end up wth the correct actvty outcome n ther study gude. 2. ASK one coach for the answers to bone tssue njures and types of njures. 3. ASK other coaches f they agree or not, and f not, why. 4. LEAD the dscusson to the actvty outcome. 5. CONTINUE debrefng the other tssue njures and types of njures. INSTRUCTOR NOTE: If you are runnng short on tme, smply tell coaches the correct answers, whch are gven n the actvty outcome.

In ths actvty, you ll learn what mechansms often cause whch njures. REVIEW the actvty resources. You ll use the table, Injures and Ther Mechansms, that follows the actvty nstructons and actvty outcome n the study gude. EPLAIN the actvty nstructons. 1. Work n teams of four f possble. INSTRUCTOR NOTE: You may need to dvde the coaches dfferently, dependng on the sze of your class. Even wth a small class, be sure you have at least two teams so that they can compete aganst each other. Teams of two to four wll work best, wth four beng optmal. 2. Work wth your team to decde whch mechansms can cause each njury lsted n the table. 3. Place an n the column f that mechansm can cause the njury. For nstance, f compresson can cause a contuson, place an under Compresson and across from Contuson. 4. You may place more than one n a row. That s, some njures can be caused by several dfferent mechansms, and you should place an under each of those. Other njures may be caused by only one mechansm. 5. You wll have 6 mnutes to complete the table. You ll need to work quckly. 6. At the end, we wll award ponts for correct answers and see whch team won the challenge. EPLAIN the actvty outcome.

Each correct answer a column correctly left blank or correctly marked wth an equals 1 pont. There are 39 possble correct answers (blanks and s). 2. REFER the teams to Injures and Ther Mechansms Actvty 3.2 Outcome n the Unt 3 Actvty Outcomes secton of the Sport Frst Ad Classroom Study Gude. 3.
