1 Job Description Managing Director - ITS Canada Target Dates: Job Posting Date: February 12, 2014 Application Closing Date: March 14, 2014 Interview Dates: Between March 17 and April 4, 2014 Job Title: Nature: Location: Managing Director Full-time Contract Position - Virtual Office environment Within the Greater Toronto Area Description The Intelligent Transportation Systems Society of Canada (ITS Canada) is a professional non-profit society, with the interrelated goals of fostering ITS applications, promoting government-industry cooperation and strengthening the ITS industry. ITS Canada is recognized as the most knowledgeable source for information and advice on intelligent transportation systems in Canada. The Society positions itself to be fair and unbiased, and does not lobby for or promote any specific commercial interests. ITS profile extends beyond physical borders, with prominent positions in the international ITS community. ITS Canada is searching for a Managing Director to lead the organization in all areas of the business. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Managing Director will be responsible to fulfil the goals and objectives of the Strategic Plan, champion the vision of the organization and lead organizational development and strategic plan execution. The Managing Director will play a key role in the continued growth of the organization and enhancing the profile across Canada and abroad. The Managing Director will proactively manage the operation of the ITS Secretariat, and be responsible for the sourcing and management of all Secretariat staff. 2 The Managing Director will possess excellent leadership, management, communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a demonstrated sense of purpose, planning, organization, and timely execution. The Managing Director will have proven success in team and network building and be inherently familiar and effectively experienced in successfully running a non-profit, largely volunteer operated organization. Working semi-autonomously, the Managing Director must be a diligent selfstarter who thrives in an environment where no direct daily supervision is required. The Managing Director, through his/her business and financial expertise, will be responsible for budget control, managing funding partnerships and grants, and fundraising activities such as the Annual Conference and General Meeting (ACGM). The Managing Director will work with the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and direct Secretariat staff in support of the ACGM. This position requires national, international and overseas travel as well as weekend and evening work, as needed. A valid licence is required. Candidate must indicate in their application how they have acquired the skills and qualifications for this position. The Managing position is a non-voting, full-time position with a contracted term of one year. The contract position is largely salary based in accordance with a routine 40-hour work week. The contract assignment may be extended by six-month increments, up to a maximum of two years before the position is either renegotiated or re-advertised. Extension of the contract by each incremental term will be subject to the review of the ITS Canada Board of Directors. A. Major Responsibilities 1. Respond to and takes action on broad directions as well as specific directions on a project-toproject basis as established by the Board of Directors, under the routine operational oversight of the Executive Committee. 2. Collaborate and consult with the Chairman of ITS Canada on a day-to-day basis to advance the broad directions of the Board. 3. Collaborate and consult as a member of the Executive management team by attending Executive Committee and Board Meetings, providing advanced predatory agenda and supporting materials, reports, recommendations and support as required. 4. Champion ITS Canada's vision and strategic plan development and to ensure its successful execution, and participate in the planning, development and execution of corresponding long range objectives for ITS Canada. 3 5. Develop proposals and detailed implementation programs which meet the goals and objectives defined in the Strategic Plan. 6. Develop strategies and table recommendations to improve the financial viability of ITS Canada by identifying and implementing Board approved funding sources and revenue generating activities. 7. Develop, plan and with timely due diligence execute effective membership drives and promotion of ITS Canada to achieve membership goals by networking with existing and new stakeholder communities. 8. Hire, manage, direct and supervise Secretariat staff within staff resource budget allocations. 9. Provide leadership of advocacy efforts through effective government/political liaison in proactively promoting ITS and ITS Canada with a view to stimulate directly or indirectly funded ITS programs and to further the success of all of ITS Canada's goals and objectives. 10. Develop, plan, manage and oversee the delivery of membership services delivery and monitors membership satisfaction. 11. Manage membership roll, monitor membership fee payments and with timely due diligence, execute methods for collecting overdue fees. 12. Manage and coordinate the development and preparation, and provide editorial control, of ITS Canada promotional materials, newsletters, websites and related publications. 13. Develop and organize small and large-scale events, projects and activities that will further ITS Canada's mission and objectives. Manage and effectively recruit and utilize regional membership volunteer resources to deliver these events, projects and activities as required. 14. Perform on-going value-administration and program assessments. B. Additional Responsibilities 1. Prepare credible operating budgets, providing assistance to the Treasurer's oversight, managing the budget, monitoring expenditures. 2. Work effectively with finance and audit committees and auditors to ensure financial accountability to the Executive Committee and Board. Managing Director - ITS Canada February of 5

4 3. Provide leadership, direction and support to project volunteers, and manage project contractors as appropriate. 4. Participate in ITS World congress Organizing Committee for the 2017 ITS World Congress in Montreal. 5. Participate in ITS Canada committees, providing direct or indirect support, or oversight, as required. 6. Manage relationship with stakeholder organizations such as TAC, ITS America, CUTA, AQTr, etc. and ensure ITS Canada's favourable embrace and credibility with such organizations. 7. When required, represent ITS Canada in domestic and international ITS and partnership activities, and provide the necessary support as required, which will include the ACGM and export missions. 8. Create professional presentations and be proficient in making business-effective presentations and public speaking. 9. Provide well-articulated and concise communication and negotiation skills on behalf of ITSC, all the time, being courteous, professional and timely with responses. 10. Perform related duties as assigned. C. Key Qualifications 1. Insight to ITS and knowledge of different ITS sectors/applications, global development and its significant players with a minimum of 5 years in the ITS industry a preferred asset. 2. Self-starter and goal/accomplishments-oriented leader, with a willingness to extend oneself beyond the call of duty when necessary in commitment to the organization. 3. Highly developed human relation skills, with the ability to communicate both orally and in writing at all levels of the organization, including the political level, preparing reports, presentations, etc. preferably in both English and French languages. 4. Business administration, organizational management, and finance administration expertise, preferably in a non-profit management/board position, with demonstrated ability to manage budgets and work within limited budget/resource constraints. 5 5. Demonstrate success in soliciting, team building, working with, leveraging, spiriting, and marshalling volunteer-based project and/or business endeavours and groups. 6. Demonstrated ability to operate as a fully accountable administrator and project leader, and as a member of a management team. 7. Entrepreneurial spirit with skills in marketing and business development, and skilful in the planning, organizing and execution of credible fundraising/revenue-raising initiatives. 8. Demonstrate ability to effectively represent ITS Canada and forge and maintain highly credible relations with Society members, government officials, elected representatives and executives of partnership organizations. 9. Experience in successful development and implementation of business programs and project management. 10. Excellent, articulate and concise communication and negotiation skills, all the time, being courteous and timely with responses. 11. Strong belief in both honest and well-principled ways of business and in dealing with human relations in general. 12. Exhibit a strong determination to overcome obstacles, but with a view to achieving win-win outcomes whenever possible. 13. Well equipped with the necessary efficient computing and office tools to enable efficient and effective operation in a virtual office environment. 14. Willingness to travel.
