1 DIRECTOR AT LARGE Position Description (Revised February 2015) The Director At Large (DAL): 1. Actively promotes and articulates the Mission and Vision of APSNA. 2. Reviews, revises and assists in the development of APSNA Policies and Position Statements in collaboration with the APSNA Committees and Special Interest Groups. 3. Serves as a liaison and consultant to APSNA SIGs to ensure the development of best clinical practice and related initiatives. 4. Maintains a leadership role in the ongoing development of the Scope and Standards of Pediatric Surgical Nursing. 5. Has a working knowledge of current trends and issues in nursing practice, education, research, healthcare administration, and health policy related to pediatric surgical nursing. 6. Maintains a leadership role representing the organization related to all partnerships, coalitions, and initiatives pertinent to health care policy and legislation consistent with APSNA s Mission and Vision. 7. Serve as a member of the BOD for a two-year term. There is a mandatory mentor year during which the outgoing DAL mentors the incoming DAL following this term. Mentoring is a proactive relationship whereby the mentor (outgoing board member) facilitates the incoming board member s understanding and fulfillment of the board position. The mentoring experience begins during the outgoing year, when the incoming board member is elected and formally ends at the end of the incoming board member s first year on the board. The outgoing board member contacts the incoming board member immediately after the elections, and reviews the job description to develop a transition plan that may include some actual responsibilities that are mutually agreed upon. The mentoring experience includes a collaborative decision on how often to meet and the best mode of communication. 8. Attends and participates in annual BOD Meetings (Pre- and Post-Conference, Business), the Fall BOD Meeting and any teleconferences to conduct the business of the organization. Presents a short report to the membership at the annual business meeting. On outgoing year does not attend the Post- Conference BOD Meeting. 9. Collaborate with and develop partnerships with specialty practice organizations that share APSNA s Mission and Vision that are focused on practice, quality, safety and health care policy initiatives to advance the care 1

2 of pediatric surgical patients through attending meetings with Nursing Community, Nurse In Washington Internship, and Institute of Professional Nursing. 10. Work in collaboration with the APSNA Provider Unit to ensure evidencebased content for all APSNA educational programs and publications. Is an active participant at bi-annual Provider Unit meetings (Provider Unit consists of Education Chair, Program Chair, Publication Chair, Director At Large), selects conference topics based on identified gaps in knowledge, needs assessment data, member feedback, and conference evaluations in collaboration with other members of the APSNA Provider Unit. 11. Maintain a working knowledge of the report from the Institute of Medicine on Nursing and develops strategies to support and implement initiatives consistent with this document. 12. Serves as a consultant in the development of the APSNA Strategic Plan (this should be done every three years in collaboration with the President, President-Elect and Immediate Past-President and include input from the membership). 13. Work in collaboration with the Leadership Chair to develop strategies for ongoing leadership development within the organization. 14. Utilize knowledge of best practice by collaborating with related organizations, i.e. National Association of Children s Hospitals (NACH). 15. Acts as a role model, change agent and professional exemplar. 16. Collaborates in an annual review of the current By-laws for revisions in with the President, President-Elect and Immediate Past-President at the Fall BOD Meeting (President-Elect facilitates this process). 17. Write a News You Can Use (NYCU) article/item after attending any partnering or development meeting, per Publication Chair timeline request. 18. In keeping with the fiduciary responsibilities of the BOD, understands and approves the budget, as well as APSNA investment policies. For those board members that have specific budget items assigned to the job description understand their budget requests, variances, and rationales, and be prepared to report on this as needed. 19. Accept special assignments as designated by the President. 3 Shows an understanding of the Scope and Practice of Pediatric Nursing and Pediatric Surgical Nursing and incorporates this into the oversight of clinical practice, quality, safely, and health care policy development. Contributes to the achievement of APSNA s objectives by effectively applying knowledge, experience and expertise to the issues confronting the organization and its place in the greater nursing community. Demonstrates adequate knowledge of the profession to understand and question the assumptions upon which the organization s health care initiatives are based. Evidences diligent preparation for meetings (is prepared, knows material and actively participates). Arrives on time, is attentive and present for the duration of all meetings. Available when needed, accessible and approachable. Accepts and volunteers for tasks and related work that furthers the strategic direction of APSNA. Respects the confidentiality of the organization s business information and the deliberations of the BOD. Contributes meaningfully and knowledgeably to BOD discussions, providing valuable input to organizational endeavors. Expresses views frankly and openly in BOD meetings. Listens to, respects and encourages the expression of opinions by other BOD members. Makes a positive contribution to the long-term viability of APSNA as a professional association and to the succession of the BOD. Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the mission and preferred future of the organization. Demonstrates an ability to assist the BOD in meeting the strategic objectives of the organization. Shows an understanding of, and willingness to respond to, members needs. TIMELINE and OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES for General Duties All year In collaboration with the Legislative SIG Chair, review content of the Nursing Community webpage for announcements, events, and news related to current legislative agendas. Maintain communication with other BOD through the APSNA BOD Networking Forum. Monitor content submitted to the APSNA Member Networking Forum for trends in clinical practice and member need. Review the APSNA website Resources Page in conjunction with the IS Chair, Publication Chair and Education Chair. If applicable, contact possible contributors and encourage participation in the review, update and upkeep with this page. Proactively seeks mentorship from Immediate Past President as needed. As part of the BOD succession plan, identifies possible future DAL(s) and 3

4 begins to collaborate with that person. May Review all APSNA policies. Review Board Networking Forum access and documents available. Review APSNA Bylaws. Attend SIG meetings and explore opportunities for collaboration. Develop goals for upcoming year and submit to President and Secretary through BOD Networking Forum by July 1. Add newly elected President to Nursing Community communications and delete Immediate Past-President. professional practice related submissions to upcoming issue of Journal of Pediatric Surgical Nursing (JPSN) for best practice content. June Receive confirmation from current President to confirm approved Bylaws from business meeting at conference before posted to website. Join all APSNA SIGs and begin to participate in SIG activities and conference calls (incoming year). Contact all SIG chairpersons, request SIG reports for NYCU, recruit new SIG chairs to fill any vacancies. Review APSNA position statements and consider related initiatives/coalitions. Begin to explore need for further development of position statements and related initiatives. Prepare and submit quarterly report to BOD Networking Forum by July 1. Provide input to the Nurse Planner Unit regarding potential topics for the Annual Meeting. July Collaborate with President Elect and Leadership Chair to develop a slate of candidates. Work with Provider Unit to ensure Provider Approver guidelines are met. Works with Program Chair, as liaison to SIGs, to coordinate annual conference sessions that may be SIG organized. August Collaborate with President, President Elect and Immediate Past President in the development of the Strategic Plan for the upcoming year (in those years when Strategic Plan is due to be updated). Revise strategic plan every three years minimum. Revise the Strategic Plan per organizational policy. Next Review due 2017 (for 2018). 4

5 September Forward any agenda items to the Education Chair for the Fall Provider Unit Meeting. Review committee reports and BOD Networking Forum discussions prior to the Fall BOD Meeting. Prepare report for, attend and participate in the Fall BOD Meeting Conference. (May be in October). Review previous year s budgets and expenditures before the Fall BOD Meeting. Submit budget requests to Treasurer at Fall BOD Meeting Conference for any expenses greater than $25 for mailing, printing, shipping, or any other expenses (all conference expenses, travel to venue) anticipated for the coming January - December Fiscal Year. Prepare and submit quarterly report to BOD Networking Forum by October 1. Collaborate with the President Elect (who leads this process) to review/revise the APSNA Bylaws. Outgoing year, contact DAL candidates and answer questions regarding board responsibilities and/or commitment. October Participate in the Provider Unit Meeting at the Fall BOD meeting. Meet with Leadership Chair to discuss leadership development strategies. Examples: Content development for Board orientation for President Elect, development of leadership related program content and submit to Program Chair for consideration, participate in the selection of Board Members to attend NALA, NIWI, SIG chair mentorship and goal setting, SIG project ideas. professional practice related submissions to upcoming issue of JPSN for best practice content. Solicit SIG project funds requests with due date November 1 st. November Review and evaluate SIG funding proposals, discuss with Executive Committee to determine funding priorities for the following year. Communicate with SIG s the project funding decisions by December 1 If outgoing board member, contact the incoming winner of the elections, review job description and commences mentoring process (See #7 Page 1). December Prepare and submit quarterly report to BOD Networking Forum by January 1 st. All receipts for reimbursement for current year should be submitted no later than December 15. January professional practice related submissions to upcoming issue of JPSN for best practice content. 5

6 Review position description and send necessary changes to President Elect by February 1 st. The Lead Nurse Planner, Education Chair, needs to take an active role in reviewing job descriptions for all Nurse Planners within the Provider Unit (Program and Publication Chairs and DAL) for compliance with provider approver guidelines. March May receive request from Education Chair to review evaluation link (test functionality), at Education Chair s discretion. Receive Provider Unit update from Education Chair. Prepare and submit quarterly report to BOD Networking Forum by April 1. Review committee reports and BOD Networking Forum discussions prior to conference. Request to attend the Nurse in Washington Internship (incoming year). April professional practice related submissions to upcoming issue of JPSN for best practice content. May If outgoing year of BOD term, meet with Incoming DAL to provide introduction to position and orientation. Continue to be available to incoming DAL for mentorship. 6
