Needs of Ostomy Patients By Dwight Knox, CEO Symbius Medical There is a dividing line among the types of serious medical conditions in the world. This dividing line is between those we speak about with others, and those we do not. For example, we may talk about skin cancer or a hip replacement. Women are more open to speaking about breast cancer today than they were 20 years ago, and men might even discuss their vasectomies with their friends. But when the condition is one that affects the consistent removal of body waste from one s body, and the person requires an ostomy, open discussion usually ends. In a word, an ostomy is not a topic in our daily lives, unless you are living with it.

2 The Ostomy Association has been extremely helpful. My surgeon s time was limited and he didn t tell me much about living with a bag. Being part of this group is very valuable because we help each other find the solutions and answers to living with an ostomy - John Kelemen Winnipeg Ostomy Association. What is the Ostomy Canada Society? A non-profit, volunteer-based organization providing emotional support, practical help, education and information for people with an ostomy, and their families, through its support groups, visiting program, membership, newsletter, website and social networking as well as: * biennial national conference * youth camp * awareness events Because of the unspoken nature of ostomy illnesses, there are a number of associations that support and encourage different types of ostomy patients. To raise awareness of people living with an ostomy and to seek ways to break down the stigmas that prevent patients from agreeing to life-saving surgery and living active lives. 3 In most medical language, an ostomy is a surgical opening in the body to rid a person s stool waste or urine liquid. This waste collects in a removable ostomy pouch, which Is worn by the person on the outside of the body and is emptied when the need arrises. This is a unique program found only in Manitoba and is in effect today. 1975: Affiliated with the United Ostomy Association, Inc. 1970: Third largest chapter in North America 1995: The WOA website goes online. It is believed to be the first in the world dedicated to ostomates. 1997: WOA members vote to affiliate with The United Ostomy Association of Canada, Inc. 2005: WOA is the host chapter of the UOAC Conference : Recipient of FOWC s Alan Porter Memorial award and wins ConvaTec s first prize for promoting World Ostomy Day. 2009: Recipient of the Premier s Volunteer Service Award. 2012: 40 th Anniversary!! Second largest chapter in Canada.
