This will be our 15th annual American Cancer Society Gala and will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at FELD Entertainment. As your gala co-chairs, we are honored to be involved with such a worthwhile and important cause. We hope that you will support this exciting event through sponsorship. Our gala profits help to fund essential programs and services for our community as well as important cancer research. To date we have funded 47 researchers who have gone on to win the Nobel Prize! 3 Mission The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service. Together with our millions of supporters, the American Cancer Society saves lives and creates more birthdays by helping people stay well and get well by finding cures and by fighting back. 3

4 2016 What: The Big Top Gala is organized and led by a volunteer committee. This elegant evening will feature a gourmet dinner, live and silent auctions, live entertainment, dancing and more! In the broadest sense, all the money we raise goes to eliminating cancer as a major health concern. The money raised is central to supporting our mission, which aims to focus our efforts in four main areas: research, education, advocacy, and service. Research: Your contributions will support the largest private non-profit source of funding for scientists studying cancer. We fund 25% of all research on cancer which has led to discoveries by 47 researchers who have become Nobel Laureates. These discoveries benefit people in our community every day. Education: Your contributions teach people how to avoid preventable cancers, when to get early detection tests, what treatment options exist and how to care for cancer patients. We sponsor support groups, hold classes, seminars, forums, do outreach to health professionals who need to know the latest information on treatment and clinical trials, and develop programs to inform youths and adults about the advantages of healthy lifestyle choices (don t smoke, eat fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly, use sunscreen, follow early detection guidelines). Advocacy: Legislative advocacy at federal, state and local levels is another area where the American Cancer Society makes a difference. Advocacy is a force multiplier in the war against cancer. Changes in laws can impact millions of people, exponentially expanding and enhancing the American Cancer Society s mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. The public arena can be as powerful a tool against cancer as the lab. Service: Your contributions provide services for cancer patients and their families to improve their quality of life. Services providing information through our call center and website are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We also provide information on our Clinical Trials Matching Service and treatment decision tools. Day to day help includes transportation, lodging, financial and insurance questions as well as prescription drug assistance. 4
