10 Gdynia Container Terminal AUSTRAL Gdynia Container Terminal (GCT) is a full-service container and heavy-lift handling facility, located in the Port of Gdynia on the coast of the southern Baltic Sea where 70 percent of Polish sea-borne containerised cargo is handled. GCT serves as a feeder port connecting Poland with hubs in Bremerhaven, Hamburg and Rotterdam as well as a load centre for Polish exports to the United Kingdom. With its entry into the European Union in 2004, Poland has been experiencing greatly increased trade flows and has reported significant container growth. These developments have facilitated GCT s transition into the region s premier port of call. GCT enjoys excellent road and rail connections. Notably, the elevated highway link with the Tri-City Bypass and the North-South A-1 Highway add to GCT s competitive advantage in terms of accessibility to the hinterland. GCT is undergoing phased development, tailor-made to market needs. 11 Terminal Catalunya SPAIN Terminal Catalunya (TERCAT) is located in the Port of Barcelona, a major gateway to Spain and the countries of the western Mediterranean, particularly France. By shipping through Barcelona, shippers can gain valuable time savings for goods flowing to Europe from Asia. AUSTRAL TERCAT was established in 1990, and, in 2006, HPH became the majority shareholder. The group plans to develop TERCAT into its principal gateway port for the western Mediterranean. TERCAT has the ability to handle the world s largest containerships. TERCAT holds the concession to build and operate the new container terminal based at Prat Pier. The first phase of this development will consist of 1.5 kilometres of quay with a minimum depth alongside of 16 metres. The facility will cover a land area of 93 hectares. This new development is scheduled to be commissioned in late 2010, coinciding with the completion of new pan-european-gauge rail links, which will run directly into the Prat Pier terminal. This new rail connection will facilitate more frequent and competitive train services to and from southern France directly into TERCAT. 13 Port of Felixstowe AUSTRAL The Port of Felixstowe (PFL) is located in the fast-growing Haven Gateway sub-region on the UK s southeast coast. It was the first purpose-built container handling facility in the UK. It is also the largest and busiest container port in the country. Customers benefit from PFL s competitive advantage of lock-free fast access and convenient access to the and European ports through its deep-sea, short-sea, feeder and transshipment operations. Felixstowe benefits from fast freeway access to the industrial heartlands and major population centres. PFL also benefits from two excellent rail terminals that connect the port to major industrial centres and transportation networks throughout the UK. Secure warehousing and a thriving local haulage presence round out the facility s advantages, further explaining why shipping companies and shippers continue to make Felixstowe their preferred port of call. The Felixstowe South Reconfiguration scheme involves the building of new deep-water container terminal, and the provision of a third rail terminal. Dredged to 16 metres alongside, Felixstowe South will provide the deepest water available at the port. In so doing, it will secure the port s position as a major European hub, and will ensure that UK importers and exporters enjoy the full range of direct-call liner services. It benefits from excellent road and rail links to the Midlands, London and the Southeast. It is ideally located for freight and passenger traffic to and from Scandinavia and the Benelux countries, offering first class ro-ro, ferry, container and bulk operations. HWH has plans to greatly extend its container-handling facilities. The development of a new deep-water container terminal at Bathside Bay in Harwich will create 1.4 kilometres of quayside, with a depth of 15 metres alongside. Moreover, the Harwich International Container Terminal scheme will make it one of the largest container ports in the UK, almost doubling the total quay length to three kilometres, and enabling the port to handle up to four deep-sea container vessels simultaneously. As the only automated port in the UK, and with nearby intermodal connections, LTP is ideally positioned to serve as a port of entry for UK-bound container traffic. Lying ten miles from the M2 and 35 miles east of London, LTP provides fast road and rail links to the UK s important manufacturing and distribution centres. LTP offers highly automated secure container yards and operates four fully equipped bonded warehouses, as well as a dedicated customs freight station incorporating a border-inspection post for customs checks.
