NYCT EXPANSION Last years record cargo volume was impressive under any circumstances. "It's kind of like having the family over for a big dinner and you've just started renovation of your kitchen," says Director Richard Larbaree in April s publication of the Journal of Commerce. Additional Port Authority investments through 2004 estimated at $100 million. Next, the Howland Hook job is part of a total initiative by the Port Authority not only to increase present capacity, but also to prepare the ports of Howland Hook, Newark and Elizabeth, NJ, for post-panamax container ships. NYCT is currently undergoing a major expansion, aided by the Port Authority's recent purchase of the adjacent 124-acre Proctor and Gamble property, which will make it the New York Harbor's premier terminal facility. The following are some of the ways NYCT will be even better equipped to serve the shipping and trucking communities in the future. A SOLUTION FOR THE NEW YORK HARBOR TODAY. A LEADER FOR THE SHIPPING WORLD TOMORROW. In order to attain more detailed information on recent developments, click on the corresponding icon. Gantry Cranes - We have added 4 new 100 ft. gauge, post panamax cranes, which will service 1,200 ft. on the North side of the berth, while we are also upgrading two of our existing cranes. New Warehousing Space - We are in a position to service all of our customers needs for warehousing, cross docking, load lightening, etc Fully integrated 24 acre on-dock rail intermodal facility is being developed. Existence of intermodal will provide access to major inland rail connections for international and domestic cargo. Completion is expected in November Berth Upgrade - Current berth expansion to 3,000 Ft. is complete. This expansion increases NYCT s current capacity while also allowing for the service of Post-Panamax vessels. Dredging - Once this work is complete the Arthur Kill will be dredged to 43 feet at mean low water up to and including berths 2 and 3 here at the terminal New Gate System The implementation of this new gate system will further enhance our already outstanding street to street turn time. Toploaders Three new Fantuzzi toploaders purchased Yard Hustlers Six new Ottawa yard hustlers have been purchased. New Berth Construction - The addition of a new berth located on Parcel C of the Proctor & Gamble property is currently in the planning stages.
ADDITIONAL BERTH The addition of a new berth located on Parcel C of the Proctor & Gamble property is currently in the planning stages. This new 1200 foot berth, together with the 50+ acres of upland storage will be serviced by a channel 50 feet (15 meters) deep along the Kill Van Kull. It will work in conjunction with the already existing 3000 of berth, yet will employ state of the art equipment and systems making for a highly efficient operation that will provide tremendous additional capacity to service your needs, i.e., no waiting. Working in conjunction with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the New York City Economic Development Corporation, the terminal has agreed to incorporate the permitting needed to build this new berth in the Environmental Impact Study (EIS) being done in conjunction with the Consolidated Port Improvement Plan (CPIP). The study will take at least a year to complete, and should result in the ability to begin construction on the new berth in early The target date for completion of this facility is 2006/2007. We will keep you advised on the planning for this exciting new project.
DREDGING After several months of delays associated with finalizing sites for upland disposal of the dredge material and verification of the capabilities of the contractor (Don Jon), selected by the US Army Corp of Engineers work on dredging of the Arthur Kill to 43 feet began on 19 July with the goal of ultimately completing contract 1, contract 2 and contract 3 by October 5 th, th We have attached the below diagram which illustrates the work plan. ** ** * * ** Started 19-July day contract with a budgeted cost of approx. $41 million Started 19-January day contract with a budgeted cost of approx. $85 million With support from The Port Authority of NY & NJ, New York City, and New York State, the USACE will combine Contracts 2 and 3. Once this work is complete the Arthur Kill will be dredged to 43 feet at mean low water up to and including berths 2 and 3 here at the terminal. As information; there is a 5 foot tidal range providing NYCT available depths of up to 48 feet once the project is complete. Please note consistent with U.S. Coast Guard requirements of two feet under vessel keel clearance, the depths noted above need to be adjusted to accommodate this regulation.
RAIL Expansion of rail facilities is a priority in order to meet the needs of our valued customers and truckers that bare much of the increasing congestion on our roads and highways. Currently, all NYCT cargo is transported on and off the terminal via tru ck. "To ensure the continued success of Howland Hook, we must provide the full range of services shipping companies expect from a modern marine terminal, which includes on-dock rail," said New York Governor George E. Pataki. To date, work is progressing well on the $72.5 million rail facility. It is currently under construction on a 38-acre parcel of land which the the Port Authority acquired in All buildings on the former Procter and Gamble site have been cleared and the site is currently being surged and prepared for construction which will start in March of Work is also under way simultaneously in the many areas required to support the facility. Arlington Yard Marshling Area Arthur Kill Lift Bridge The tracks coming from the Arthur Kill Lift Bridge Chemical Coast line connection NYCT rail overpass - The tunnels serving as the entrance and exit to NYCT are being rebuilt to accommodate the weights required for double stack rail cars. Our best estimate for the availability of rail to the terminal is the last quarter of When completed, the Howland Hook rail facility will handle 250,000 containers a year and will allow cargo to be sent by rail to and from destinations around the country.
BERTH CONSTRUCTION The 200 foot extension on the southern end of the pier towards the Goethals Bridge has been completed and is currently in use. Work is also progressing on the 300 foot extension on the northern end of the pier. This area, as well as 150 feet of existing pier that has been retrofitted, can now accommodate our new Liebher 100 foot gauge cranes. (link) The pier is nearing completion and should be operational by.. This work is all part of phase one of the PA's three phase $36 million berth construction project. Completion of the northern 450 feet is scheduled for February of The timing for the completion of this first phase is critical such that the berth is ready to accept our new cranes which have been constructed on the facility and are currently going through testing. At all times during this construction we will have available 2000 foot of berth, with 3,000 feet of berth becoming available
NEW CRANES We are excited about the weekly progress on our four new Liebherr post panamax cranes. Currently these cranes are going through testing, and should be fully operational by. Crane Specification: Operating outreach 164 feet - 18 wide - 50 meters Height of lift above rail 120 feet meters Operating back reach 82 feet - 25 meters Main hoist speed with 65 LT FPM - 53 meters PM - very fast, twice the existing speed (Read even further improved marine productivity) Spreader bar with separating twin twenty capability
ADDITIONAL WAREHOUSE CAPACITY Just as the other New Jersey/New York terminals are tearing down their warehouses to accommodate space requirements, we have recently concluded a deal with the Port Authority where we acquired an additional 212,000 square feet of on dock, first class dry warehouse space. Combined with our existing warehouse capacity we now control approximately 500,000 square feet of warehouse space. We are in a position to service all of our customers needs for warehousing, cross docking, load lightening, etc. This capacity, along with our existing on site full service U.S. Customs and AQI capabilities allows customers to save time and money when dealing with regulatory requirements. If you have any customers that might want to take advantage of this new first class warehouse space, please contact Brad Winfree our Director of Logistics to further explore this advantage. Telephone
ADDITIONAL NEW EQUIPMENT In addition to all the capital work that is being done, we have been busy in other areas as well. New Telephone System In June of this year we installed a new CISCO IP Phone System to give us more functionality and reliability. New Tractors This year we purchased six new Ottawa Tractors. This is the first step in a structured replacement program which will insure that our equipment is serviceable and no older than seven years. New Top loaders We recently received the three new Fantuzzi top picks. This $1 million investment is again the first of a structured replacement program to insure the serviceability of our operating fleet of equipment handlers.
TRAC CHASSIS FLEET The Metro Chassis Fleet which is available on terminal to service many of our customers has grown to approximately 2,000 chassis. This is a combination of sliding 20 footers, 40 footers, and 45 foot chassis. Many of these chassis have been equipped with GPS to allow users to get up to the minute knowledge of where their shipments are. It is the terminal's firm conviction that all the lines as well as the several terminal operators in the harbor will benefit from the spread of this great chassis pool. Trac also is providing access to "gray" gensets, both underslung and nose mounts. This service provides lines working here a real advantage to handle surge cargo without problems and without significant capital commitments. Further information on both the chassi s and genset programs can be obtained by contacting a Trac Chassis Representative.
NEW GATE SYSTEM We are currently in the process of installing a state of the art gate system for implementation in The new system will incorporate Optical Character Recognition (OCR), in motion weighing, and eliminate the need for drivers to waste time getting in and out of their trucks. The implementation of this new gate system will further enhance our already outstanding street to street turn time. This project will be completed by the end of 2005.
