1 About the initiative The ALTC in partnership with the University of Western Sydney have been commissioned by the Australian Government to develop a comprehensive framework within which to locate the wide variety of ways in which key issues of social, economic and environmental sustainability are being addressed in the curriculum of Australia s universities and higher education institutions. Mapping current initiatives and sharing best practice are important steps in achieving the objectives of the Government s Green Skills Accord. The Accord aims to ensure skills for sustainability are an integral part of all vocational education and training and are relevant to the current and future needs of industry. The Green Skills Accord Implementation Group has identified the key role universities have in producing graduates who will ensure these objectives are realised. This website provides a single repository outlining the full range of ways in which universities are responding to the Green Skills agenda. Information is provided on: Relevant higher education courses that include sustainability content. Examples of effective professional development and other collaborative activities that build the capacity of academics to deliver these courses. Development and implementation of delivery of programmes and embedding sustainability principles institutionally. What are green skills? Skills for sustainability, also know as green skills, are the technical skills, knowledge values and attitudes needed in the workplace to develop and support sustainable social, economic and environmental outcomes in business industry and the community. Griffith University: Bachelor of Business (Sustainable Enterprise) In this major, you will gain the skills and knowledge base necessary to manager the sustainability needs of organisations, and develop the analytical, communication and decision-making skills to implement sustainability business solutions. Griffith University: Bachelor of Engineering (Advanced Studies Environmental Engineering) Environmental Engineering has a strong interdisciplinary focus on formulating solutions to environmental problems, and developing innovative strategies and technologies for a sustainable future. Griffith University: Bachelor of Engineering (Advance studies sustainable energy systems) This discipline major prepares students to work in the exciting and challenging area of sustainable and renewable energy and power engineering Griffith University: Bachelor of Environmental Design This degree is the foundation study for a career as an architect. The focus of this degree is on the design and redesign of buildings, urban systems, public places, transport nodes, and recreation and conservation areas.

Resources Higher Education Academy UK: 2006: Developing a Network for the Development of Sustainability Education in the Humanities (Sinclair, Liverpool) The purpose of this project was to build capacity a network within the humanities in understanding the relevance of sustainability education to issues facing the fragility of our common material resource and on the basis of this network to develop strategies/proposals for the development of teaching materials that would have salience for discipline-specific teaching which could then seek funding on their own merits. Higher Education Academy (UK): 2007: Employable Graduates for Responsible Employers (Cade, StudentForce) This information will be of interest to anyone wishing to make an employability case for the inclusion of education for sustainable development (ESD) in the higher education curriculum.
