(2011) Criminal Behavior, A Psychological Approach, 9 th Ed., Upper Saddle River, N. J.: Pearson Education, Inc. Course Description: Theory and research on the development of criminal behavior, the causes of crime, and crime prevention will be explored from a psychological point of view, with applications to current practice. The course will examine and evaluate the role of these and other psychological factors in understanding the motives behind antisocial acts, such as persistent violence, multiple murders, and sexual offenses. Throughout the course, students will acquire knowledge and practice in the application of psychological methods to understanding criminal behavior. Objectives: The course goals and objectives incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes (ADO s) established by the JCC Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty. These goals are in concert with four-year colleges, universities and reflect input from the professional communities we serve. ADOs guarantee students achieve goals necessary for graduation credit, transferability, and professional skills need in many certification programs. The ADOs and course objectives addressed in this class include the following: Students in Criminal Justice Psychology (CRJ 104) will: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of at least 3 competing theories of human behavior as applied to the development, maintenance and continuation of criminal behavior. 2. Use critical thinking to examine problems and issues related to the criminal justice system and criminal behavior from a psychological point of view. 1

2 3. Apply scientific processes and techniques to forensic psychology questions. 4. Work as a member of a team to solve problems, complete tasks and evaluate tools of other team members. 5. Apply understanding of theories to real world cases and events to determine human behavior. 6. Examine problems and issues related to the criminal justice system and criminal behavior using critical thinking. 7. Demonstrate ability to examine psychological theories of human behavior and the causes of crime. Course Expectations and Policies: All students will be expected to do the required readings prior to class. Field experiences of the instructor will supplement the textbook readings. Examinations will cover both lecture and textbook material. How you earn your grade 1. Take 10 quizzes (10 points each), with the two lowest quiz scores dropped, so you can earn a total of 100 points for quizzes. Quizzes are given at the beginning of class so be sure to be on time. If you show up after the quizzes are passed out you will not be given one. 2. Criminal profile paper For the purpose of this paper you will pick a high profile criminal and explain the biological, situational, and developmental factors that contributed to the criminal s behavior. The paper should be 6-8 pages long, double spaced (not including the title page and references) and use APA style. A rough copy of the report will be submitted for a peer review prior to the final paper being submitted. There will also be an in-class presentation of your paper. The presentation will be no more than 10 minutes in length. You need to tell me who you will be profiling by Jan 24th. You can earn a total of 200 points for your paper. To do well on this assignment you should: 1. Give a thorough description of the criminal s background (life story) 2. Utilize course material to explain the criminal s behavior 2

3 3. Discuss how psychological theories and research contributed to the apprehension, prosecution, understanding and/or treatment of the criminal 3. Participation/Attendance: Points will be awarded each class session based on attendance, conduct and participation for a total of 80 points. Another 20 points will be awarded based on overall participation through the semester. In order to qualify for these points you need to be in class for the entire class period, engage in class discussions, and be respectful to everyone in the class. Points will be deducted at the instructor s digression. Any disruptive behavior will result in the loss of participation points for that class period. 4. In-class assignments There will be several in-class assignments offered during the semester. The majority of each assignment will be completed during the class session. The only way to earn points for the assignment is by being present in class. Each assignment will be worth a total of 25 points multiple choice exams (100 points each) covering all course material. Exams may be comprised of true/false, matching, multiple choice, short answer, or essay questions. Exams will cover material from text book chapters, lecture material, and other assigned readings. The third exam is comprehensive and covers all material presented during the semester. You can earn a total of 300 points on tests. Make-up Exams: Since the lowest three quiz grades are dropped, missed quizzes cannot be made up. Make-up exams are allowed but it is your responsibility to contact me so arrangements can be made. The exams must be completed the week you return to class and will be penalized 10% of the earned grade. Make-up exams will consist of essay questions. The last exam can be only be made up ahead of a prescheduled absence. 3

4 Extra Credit There is the potential for extra credit assignments to be announced in class. It is your responsibility to know when assignments are due and to complete them and hand them in on time. No late extra credit assignments will be accepted. All assignments, extra credit, and paper must be turned in at the beginning of the class period in their entirety. No electronic submission of any kind will be accepted. If you want to turn in an assignment prior to class drop it off at the main office and ask them to put it in my mailbox. If you expect to miss a class and a paper/ assignment is due you need to ensure you drop your work off at the office prior to class. This being said, missing any one day of class will not make or break your grade. You are the best judge of your ability to benefit from being in class. If you are very sick or otherwise indisposed, such as just having pulled a double shift, or having stayed up for two days with sick kids, please demonstrate good judgment by staying home. Classroom Conduct: Please respect everyone s time and attention by being in the class room, ready to work, at the designated time for this class. If you arrive after I have handed out an assignment, I probably won t let you earn points for that assignment, but arriving late is better than not showing up at all. Leaving class early is frowned upon, and will inspire an extra-credit opportunity for those people who remain. Taking notes in class is essential. Audio recording of lectures to augment in-class note taking is fine with me, just let me know you are doing so. Taking notes on a laptop is fine as long as it is not distracting to the other students. If a laptop is not being used for note taking purposes it needs to be turned off. All other electronica (such as cell phones, MP-3 players, headphones, hands-free devices) must be turned off and earpieces stored away for the class period. Let me know if you are expecting an emergency call, and please sit in the corner nearest the door, so that you can leave without disrupting the rest of the class. Moderate amounts of unobtrusive food and 4

5 drink will be tolerated. If the food becomes messy, smelly, or distracting in any way, tolerance will decrease. Anyone coming to class under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be excused from the class. It s a good idea to not let this happen as it will be very difficult for you to persuade me to let you back in. Students indulging in cheating or plagiarism will receive a failing grade for that assignment/paper/test, and will be referred immediately for administrative action. Accommodations for special cases: Students who utilize accommodations for optimal learning, please let me know after the first class period, and then work through Learning Support Services for verification of disability and setting up accommodations. Please let me know of any issues on the first day of class. Withdrawal from class: You must initiate a withdrawal in person at the school. If the withdrawal from class is instructor initiated, the student will be notified by letter by the Registrar s office after the withdrawal has been processed for an opportunity for the student to appeal the withdrawal from class. If the withdrawal from class is student initiated, it is necessary for an advisor or counselor to approve the schedule change. The student s official date of withdrawal will be the date received at the registrar s office. A student is not considered withdrawn from class until the withdrawal form has been processed (drop/add form). If for any reason, at any point, you consider the option of withdrawing from the class, please speak to me. Refund of W removal criteria 1. The following criteria must be met for exceptions to JCC s refund or W removal policy. Supporting 3 rd party documentation (medical, employer, Military) must be attached. 2. A request for a W exception, refund, or balance forgiven that meets the above criteria must be before the last day to withdraw for full semester 5

6 courses as indicated in each semester s course schedule book. For shorter length courses, it is the student s responsibility to check with the registrar office for the last day to withdraw. 3. All request must be submitted in writing, from the student, with the required supporting 3 rd party documentation to: Jackson Community College Tuition Review Committee 2111 Emmons Road Jackson, MI Academic issues such as grade disputes or issues with instructors should be directed to the appropriate department chair and follow the academic complaint procedure. I (incomplete) Grade: The incomplete grade is designed for students with extenuating circumstances to allow them to complete the course requirements after the semester or session has ended. If the student does not complete the course work within the designated time period, as determined by the instructor, the registrar will replace the I with the earned grade assigned by the instructor. The grade I is not awarded to students who do not attend, seldom attend, or to those who simply are not pleased with their final grades. Students receiving an I submit only the remaining work that had not been completed at the end of the semester. Students do not redo work that had already been graded.
