1 Biology 156 Introductory Biology for Allied Health Professor: Darin Taverna, PhD Course Objectives An introductory biology course for allied health majors with an emphasis on humans. Topics include fundamental concepts of cell biology, histology, microbiology, and genetics. Prerequisites: None. One year of high school chemistry or one semester of college- level chemistry recommended. Course Competencies 1. Describe principles of scientific method. 2. Describe fundamental characteristics of living matter. 3. Describe principles of biological chemistry. 4. Describe prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell structure and function. 5. Describe human histology including a survey of basic tissue types, their structure, and function. 6. Describe principles of cell metabolism and energy utilization. 7. Describe the structure, growth, and human impact of bacteria and viruses. 8. Describe structure and replication of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and chromosomes. 9. Describe gene structure and protein synthesis. 10. Describe cell reproduction in eukaryotes. 11. Describe principles of Mendelian genetics as they apply to inheritance in humans. 12. Apply general concepts to selected topics in human biology. Resources Required text: Biology by Sylvia S. Mader. 10th Ed McGraw Hill Publishers - or - Introductory Biology for Allied Health McGraw Hill Publisher (at PC Bookstore) If you choose to purchase the textbook in electronic form, go to (the book is also available at the PC Bookstore and can be found at various booksellers online) Course Requirements and Policies Attendance policy: you must log into the course on a weekly basis throughout the term and respond to messages sent by your instructor in a timely manner (no greater than three days). Failure to comply with the attendance policy may result in withdrawal from the course for not participating.

2 You must log in within 2 days of the official start date of the course (see Academic Calendar) or you will be dropped. You must complete the online eorientation during the first week of the term. If the eorientation is not completed - OR- you have not logged in within two days of the start of class, you will be dropped from the course. You must complete all the assignments in the course by their assigned due dates or you will lose full points for those assignments. Refer to the Schedule and Discussion Boards for details. No late work is accepted unless arrangements have been made prior to the due date. You are responsible for knowing and following the information in this syllabus as well as any additional information that is posted to the Announcements, Discussion Boards, of sent via . You are responsible for following College policies included in the College Catalog and the Student Handbook. You will be notified by the instructor by and/or the Announcements or Discussion Boards of any changes in course requirements or policies. 3 Quizzes Reading, Supplemental Materials, and Lab quizzes have been included within the Canvas course as multiple choice quizzes. To utilize these quizzes, complete ALL the required information, click save answer after each question, and then click the "submit" button at the bottom of the quiz. If you are unable to submit the form with all required information fields complete, please contact your instructor immediately. Essays Essays are to be submitted by Sunday at 12:59 am or they will be considered late. Please consult the Schedule for more information. Essays will be graded based upon the following rubric: Essay Grading Rubric Criteria Rating/Commentary Max Points Addresses main topic Feedback will be provided on 15 completely. each essay. Uses proper grammar, Feedback will be provided on 3 punctuation, and capitalization. Includes an introductory paragraph and appropriate supporting paragraphs. each essay. Feedback will be provided on each essay. Maximum Essay Points 2 20 References must be added to support your essays Properly submits essay. All essays must be submitted as files. Essay is at least 150 words but no more than 250 words in length. Submits essays on time. Referencing allows the reader to check your research, and also gives proper credit for their work. Essays not properly referenced will lose a minimum of 2 points. Essays that are not submitted properly will lose 2pts. Essays that are less than 150 or more than 250 words will lose points depending on how deficient/excessive they are to a maximum of 5pts. References don t count toward the words. All essays are to be submitted by the due date. Essays that are late will lose 20pts (zero for assignment)

4 Withdrawals (W or Y) Students who enroll but do not participate in the class may withdraw themselves by calling Admissions and Records, or their instructor may withdraw them. Either case will result in a grade of "W." Note that participation means the completion of a single homework assignment or an exam. Students who complete assignments or participate and then cease to participate must contact their instructor to initiate a withdrawal. It is your responsibility to initiate a withdrawal from the class. Failure to do so may result in a failing grade for the semester, a "Y" or a "W" grade at the instructor's discretion. It is highly recommended that you: Save all of your correspondence for the semester. Keep a back- up copy of ALL the work you submit to your instructor. Contact your instructor if you do not receive your assignment or quiz results within a week of the due date. (Note: If an assignment or quiz has been lost, you will need to submit a replacement copy.) Netiquette and Disruptive Behavior Policy Netiquette refers to the generally accepted rules of behavior for communicating in the online environment. This list will serve as a general overview of these rules. 1. Be professional and careful with what you say in your posting. Express your thoughts clearly and concisely. 2. Be careful when using sarcasm and humor. Internet communications are very impersonal and others may take your words as criticism. 3. Be courteous and respectful of other people. If you use abusive or offensive language, you will be blocked from the discussion area and potentially removed from your course. If that is the case, you will not receive a refund for your tuition. 4. Use common sense - is this message something that you want to be sent to you? Will you understand it in 3 days if you were to go back and read it? Disruptive behavior on Canvas or the Phoenix College campus will not be tolerated and will be dealt with in accordance with college policy. (See Phoenix College Student Handbook pages C- 23/C- 28.) Disruptive behavior includes harassment of other students or instructor and inappropriate or unsafe activities with respect to other students, instructors, equipment or supplies. Academic Misconduct Policy We expect every student to produce his/her original, independent work. Any student whose work indicates a violation of the MCCCD Academic Misconduct Policy can expect penalties. Academic dishonesty includes cheating and plagiarism. A First offense will be given a score of 0 for the assignment. A Second offense will result in failure of the course. All incidents will be reported to the Biology Department Chairperson and to the Academic Vice President (See the Phoenix College Student Handbook pages C- 7/C- 8.). For your protection, please avoid even the appearance of academic dishonesty.

5 Financial Policy Students may be withdrawn from the class for non- participation. If you are receiving financial aid of any kind, it is your responsibility to protect your eligibility to receive financial aid by meeting the requirements of this class. Disability Statement If you are aware of any physical or non- physical disability that may affect your performance in class, please inform your instructor during the first week of class. Phoenix College's Disability Support Services can provide for some of the special needs of disabled students (See the Phoenix College Student Handbook pages A- 13/A- 14.). Disability Support Services include interpreting for the deaf, note taking, reading, testing accommodations, and accommodations for the learning disabled with documentation. Special Services is located in the Hannely Center. Communications It is best to contact your instructor by Alternatively, you can use the course Discussion Board. Please note there is usually a 24- hour turn- around policy on these messages except on Saturday, Sunday and Holidays. Announcements Your instructor uses Announcements to make general announcements to the class. It is very important that you read all of the messages on the Announcements page on a regular basis and ask any questions you may have about them. Discussion Board The Discussion Board is an important communication device. It is divided into Forums. Anything you send to it is available to everyone in the class. Please, take the time to read all of the messages on the Discussion Board and ask any questions you may have about them. Introductions Forum Use this discussion board to introduce yourself, interact with your classmates and help us all get to know one another. Reply to this forum with your name, occupation, the program that you are studying, your interests and any other pertinent information that you wish to share. If you want, upload a picture or share your favorite links. General Class Questions Use this discussion forum for class- related questions. If you come up with questions about course structure or how to complete your assignments, post them here. I will respond to the question if a fellow student has not responded and I will add to responses as necessary. Refer to this discussion board often - if you have a question it is very likely a classmate has a similar one! You can post anonymously.

6 Academic Help Your Instructor is available to answer questions. If you ask a specific question, even about a quiz, your instructor can steer you in the right direction. So, don't hesitate to ask for help! Please feel free to ask questions. For example, when faced with an essay question like: Describe how a cell carries out energy transformations. Explain the role of mitochondria and chloroplasts in energy transformations. You may want to ask: What is an energy transformation? or What is a mitochondrion? Ask away!
