STUDY TIPS: To do well in this class, you must show up to class, participate and complete the assignments regularly. Study the assigned readings & videos, which will help you meet the competencies of the course. Ask questions. This is a fast paced, hands-on course. It is realistic to expect to spend at least 10 hours per week studying for this class. If you miss any class, it is your responsibility to obtain class information from a classmate as soon as possible. Ask me any questions on the missed material as soon as possible. The content of this course builds on itself throughout the semester. Consequently, it is important that students master early concepts, as they will become building blocks for concepts introduced later in the course. Students should seek extra help (tutoring, come in to office Page 1 of 6

2 hours, etc.) as soon as possible if they feel that they are getting behind on the course material. HOW THE COURSE FITS INTO THE CURRICULUM: This course provides an introduction to programming logic, the Java programming language and some advanced topics in Java Programming. It is a great starting place for students interested in programming certificates, mobile development and obtaining other certificates and degrees at DMACC. This software is the property of Des Moines Area Community College. COURSE POLICIES ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION: You are expected to: Attend the face-to-face meetings each week for our course. Be active and present in the course participating in discussions and projects - both face-to-face and in Blackboard. Dedicate sufficient time outside of class in order to be prepared for class, through readings, exercises and other learning experiences. Log into our web blended course minimally three times per week in Blackboard. Check your DMACC at least three times per week. Ask questions of material that you don t understand and answer questions for material that you do understand. Participate in discussion boards, blogs and/or journals before the due date. Page 2 of 6

3 Submit assignments and complete exams/tests before they are due in order to give yourself adequate time should a problem arise. Have access to a dependable computer and Internet connection. Maintain your DMACC issued computer in a safe and usable format. Do not install unnecessary programs or plugins that might interfere with the prime intent of the laptop. Have a back-up plan in case the computer or connection fails. Communicate with me regarding any issues with course materials, grades, or technical issues. Use your DMACC address to communicate with me. Call or the DMACC Helpdesk with any technical issues with Blackboard (post this number/ address on your computer & program it into your phone). Put forth your best effort and accept responsibility for your learning. Absenteeism will affect your grade; just like a lack of participation (not contributing, sleeping, distracted by technology) in the in-class projects and exercises will result in a denial of points for those exercises. You may not earn points on in-class work if you are absent, withdrawn or providing a hindrance to the exercise. There is no such thing as an approved absence and in-class work cannot be made up. Active participation in these exercises is the only way to earn points. GRADING CRITERIA: Based on percentage of points possible accumulated throughout the course. Points will be awarded for exams, quizzes, assignments, projects and participation. Our course is graded on a pass/fail scale. Pass 70% or greater on course work Fail Less than 70% on course work Providing you with feedback in my top priority. You can expect the following turn-around time: In-class projects and exercises scores posted in Blackboard within 3 business days and returned to you during the next class meeting Assignment, blogs, journals, wikis & discussion boards grades and feedback within 3 business days of the due date Tests & Quizzes within 2 business days of the due date Final project within 5 business days of the due date Late work within 7 business days from when you submitted the work to me I will use the announcement section in Blackboard and in-class announcements to communicate changes in the schedule or when grades for a unit/assignment are posted. Please note that the final grades in My Grades will not be 100% official until I post an announcement indicating they are official. If you have questions or see a discrepancy throughout the term, please me ASAP so I can investigate it. CLASSROOM CONDUCT: Page 3 of 6

4 You are expected to be respectful and courteous to your classmates and instructors in all classes at DMACC. Our class will determine our classroom expectations during our first meeting time. COMMUNICATION POLICY: After you me to my DMACC address, you can expect a response within 24 hours during Monday through Friday. On Saturday, Sunday and holidays, I will respond within 48 hours. Generally, I do not check between 9pm and 8am. Communicating with you is one of my top priorities. MISSED EXAMS: Projects, exercises & quizzes that are completed in-class during our specific meeting time for a score cannot be made up if you miss the class period. If an online exam or quiz occurs during the week and you miss it, you have one additional week to complete the exam for half credit of your earned score. If you do not complete the online exam within the late week, you will receive a zero score on the exam or quiz. After a quiz or exam closes beyond the late week, you will no longer have access to it and be able to complete it for any points. If an exam or quiz has a time limit, students who exceed the time limit will have two points deducted from their score for each minute beyond the time limit. LATE ASSIGNMENTS: Each assignment will have a due date. After the due date, 50 percent will be deducted for each late assignment. No credit after assignment is 7 days late. No credit on any assignments after the last assignment (final project) at the end of the term. Late assignments must be submitted via the appropriate location in Blackboard. If the assignment is not available, late work is no longer being accepted for it. It is the responsibility of the student to retrieve assignments from Blackboard before the weekly due date and to submit assignments using the correct links. No late work will be accepted for the final week of class. Again, projects, exercises & quizzes that are completed in-class during our specific meeting time for a score cannot be made up if you miss the class period. EXTRA CREDIT: No extra credit for late assignments. Extra credit awarded at the discretion of the instructor. Extra credit offered in-class is not eligible for students who were not in class attendance during the class meeting when the extra credit opportunity was distributed. STUDY EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to have completed any assigned readings, videos and activities in the module/week and be prepared to discuss the assigned material or participate in online activities when they are available. Plan to spend 10+ hours on our course per week. WEATHER POLICY: Individual circumstances such as health, childcare, rural roads, distance from the College, etc. can vary greatly among students and staff. It is always DMACC s goal to provide safe learning conditions, as well as provide the opportunity for students to attend classes when the vast majority is able to safely attend. The final decision to come to College can only be made by the individual student based on their specific extenuating circumstances that may make it unsafe for them to travel. During adverse weather, DMACC faculty is considerate of students who are unable to attend classes due to unique extenuating circumstances. Notification of Campus/College closures will be sent out through the DMACC RAVE Alert System, posted to the DMACC webpage at and where possible sent to local media. Page 4 of 6

5 If DMACC cancels our class due to inclement weather, please check your DMACC and our Blackboard announcements area until you hear from me with information on how we will make up the course. CLASS CANCELLATION PROCEDURE: It is the responsibility of each faculty member to notify their students (in addition to their dean or provost) through some predetermined means if they must postpone or cancel a specific class. In the event that I must cancel class and cannot find a substitute, I will notify you via your DMACC by 9AM on the day of our class. I will provide instructions to you via a Blackboard Announcement and your DMACC on how we will make up with course. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY/PLAGIARISM: Academic integrity, based on the values of honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility, is a fundamental principle of scholarship at DMACC. DMACC s Academic Misconduct Policy (ES 4670) prohibits: plagiarism (using another person s writing or copying any work without proper citation), falsification, unauthorized collaboration during a test or on an assignment, or substitution for another student to take an exam, course or test. If you are to benefit from this class and be properly evaluated for your contributions, it is important for you to be familiar with and follow DMACC s Academic Misconduct policy. Students are encouraged to review DMACC s Academic Misconduct Policy on-line at or in the DMACC Student Handbook. Work that violates these values is incompatible with the goals of this class and will not be tolerated. Students who are found responsible for a violation of the Academic Misconduct Policy will receive a failing grade for the test or assignment. If a second occurrence happens, students will receive a failing grade for the course. All academic misconduct will be reported according to the policy outlined in ES4670. Students have the right to appeal and may do so by following the procedures described in the Academic Misconduct policy.
