This homework booklet practises some of the language skills you have covered this year. It includes work in GERMAN and FRENCH but the focus is on your skills. It will help you review the key grammar and language learnt throughout your first year of foreign language at Whitstone in preparation for year 8. Each exercise is labelled as: Must: All pupils must try to complete. Should: All pupils should attempt. Could: Some pupils could try to complete. Pupils must complete the self-evaluation boxes at the end of the booklet. Parents must comment and sign on completion. All learning objectives are in accordance to the new Key Stage 3 framework for languages.

Exercise 1a French and German - Pronouns The job of a pronoun is to replace the noun in a sentence. You need to know what they are in order to help you understand the texts you read or to help you adapt language to talk about others. Fill in the following tables with the correct French and German pronouns. Use the boxes underneath to help. Exercise 1a English I You (singular) He She We You (plural) They (feminine) They (masculine/mixed group) French il nous tu elle je vous ils elles English I You (singular) He She It We You (plural) They German ich sie Sie es wir Sie du er ihr

Exercise 1b French and German - Pronouns Highlight/underline the pronouns in the following German text: 1) Ich heisse Heike und ich habe zwei Schwestern. 2) Wo wohnst du? Ich wohne in Coleford in England. 3) Mein Vater heisst Tom und er ist 45 Jahre alt. 4) Claudias Lieblingsfach ist Kunst. Sie ist kreativ. 5) Mark und ich trinken Wasser und wir essen Chips und Kekse. Write the correct pronoun into the following French sentences: 1) m appelle Sarah (I) 2) joues au foot (you singular) 3) avons l EPS (we) 4) jouons l hockey (they masculine) 5) Comment s appelle? (she) Exercise 2a French and German - Gender In French and German all nouns are put in categories. French uses 2 categories MASCULINE and FEMININE. German uses 3 categories MASCULINE, FEMININE and NEUTER. When you learn a word you need to learn which category it is in to help with your accuracy in sentences. A dictionary will tell you whether a noun is masculine, feminine or neuter by putting (m), (f), or (n) next to the word. For example: Hund (m) dog this shows that the word for dog is masculine in German. Chien (m) dog this shows that the word for dog is masculine in French. Find the following words in a dictionary/ language text book glossary. Write down whether they are masculine/feminine (French) or masculine, feminine or neuter (German).

French words : 1) ballon = 2) chat = 3) trousse = 4) gomme = 5) sœur = 6) plage = 7) hôtel = 8) cinéma = 9) piscine = 10)foot = German words : 1) Tag = 2) Apfelsaft = 3) Kassette = 4) Brief = 5) Geschenk = 6) Zebra = 7) Mann = 8) Banane = 9) Glas = 10)Mädchen = Exercise 2b French Gender The French word for a is un for masculine words and une for feminine words The French word for the is le for masculine words and la for feminine words, les for plural. Complete the phrases below with the correct word for a or the. Read the English carefully. You may use a dictionary to help you. 1) _un livre = a book 2) trousse = a pencil case 3) pomme = an apple 4) lapin = the rabbit 5) chat = the cat 6) stylos = the pens 7) banane = a banana 8) jupe = a skirt 9) gomme = a rubber 10) araignées = the spiders Exercise 2c German Gender In German there are different words for a according to the gender ein for masculine and neuter and eine for feminine. Except after Ich habe when the masculine word changes to einen. Example: ein Hund (m) = a dog BUT Ich habe einen Hund = I have a dog Can you work out the correct word for a based on whether the nouns are masculine, feminine or neuter and whether the sentence has Ich habe in it. Use a dictionary to find out if the words are masculine, feminine or neuter. Example: Das ist ein Etui (n) 1) Ich habe Schwester 2)Das ist Klebstift 3) Ich habe Katze 4)Das ist Rock 5) Ich habe Onkel

Exercise 3a German Word Order The verb is the action of a sentence and it is usually the 2 nd idea in a sentence, e.g ich habe eine Katze I have a cat. Put these sentences in the correct order following the rules: a) esse Ich ein Butterbrot. - b) wohnt in Deutschland er. - c) findet Mathe sie schwierig. - d) trinken wir Cola. - e) eine Schwester habe Ich. - f) heissen Sophie sie und Claire. - Exercise 3b German Word Order Using weil (because) in a sentence changes the word order of, to send any verbs that follow it to the end of the sentence. Try linking both sentences together with weil remembering the word order rule (verb in the 2 nd part of the sentence gets chased to the end of the sentence after weil ). Example: Ich finde Sport toll. Es ist einfach Ich finde Sport toll, weil es einfach ist a) Ich mag Geschichte. Ich finde es interessant. b) Ich lese gern. Ich finde Comics toll. c) Wir finden Werken super. Es ist sehr praktisch.

Now think up 3 sentences of your own that are linked using weil they can be on any topic you like:

Exercise 4 German Comprehension You need to be able to skim texts for key information even when you do not understand every word. Read the text below about school: a) Some words in German look like English highlight the words you can guess because they look like English words. (cognates) b) Underline the nouns remember nouns have capital letters in German. c) Circle the verbs remember the word order rules in German. By breaking down a text like this you should start to understand what it is talking about.

In the space below write out 5 facts mentioned in the text which you have been able to work out from reading it carefully. 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) Exercise 5a French Present Tense When you look up a verb in the dictionary it is always given in the INFINITIVE. This means it is the full name of the verb eg to play, to do, to go etc. You need to change the ending of the verb in the present tense to follow a pattern. Regular verbs eg jouer = to play. You remove the er to make the STEM then add the ending shown, depending on who is in the sentence. Je joue = I play Tu joues you play (singular) Il/elle joue he/she plays Nous jouons we play Vous jouez you play (plural) Ils/elles jouent they play (boys/girls)

Fill in the correct part of the present tense verbs below AND write what they mean in English. 1) Elle (parler) = Elle parle = she speaks 2) J (arriver) = J = 3) Tu (manger) = tu = 4) Je (travailler) = Je = 5) Il (jouer) = il = Exercise 5b French Present Tense Read the verbs in the green box and fill them into the correct gap, to complete the sentences about school.
