2 Enrollment in Spring Classes 2016 Please Read Community Education For the past 33 years, Katy ISD has operated a community education program that has grown to include almost 3000 participants per semester. The purpose of Community Education is to provide the general public with learning opportunities. These opportunities include self-improvement, enrichment, recreation, and academic courses. You are invited to take advantage of this opportunity to develop your interests, learn new skills and make new friends. If you are interested in a course that is not being offered, send your suggestions to Community Education, Katy ISD, 6301 South Stadium Lane, Katy, TX or Russell Faldyn at RussellJFaldyn@katyisd.org General Information The Community Education Program of Katy ISD is conducted for the benefit and enjoyment of community patrons. Classes are held on KISD campuses. Classes are offered for non-credit. Financial support for the program comes from the class fees. Payment for classes must, therefore, be received before students attend classes. Certificates of completion are issued for most classes. A minimum of 80% attendance is required to obtain a certificate of completion. Children are not to be brought to class. Classes will begin as scheduled without notification. No confirmation of enrollment is sent out and you will be notified only if the class is cancelled, or the schedule changes. Age Requirement Classes are offered for ages 18 and up regardless of where they live. Late Fees Community Education registration must be received three (3) business days prior to the first class meeting. If received later, a $10 late fee will be assessed.

3 Refund Policy The Community Education Program is funded solely from tuition. Once a class has made or is in progress, expenses for the teacher and materials are set. Therefore, the following procedures must be followed: For classes cancelled because of lack of enrollment, 100 percent of tuition will be refunded. For students who withdraw from a class after registration and before the second class meeting, 75 percent of the tuition will be refunded. No refund will be given after the second class meeting (whether the student has attended or not). Late fees are not refundable unless Katy Community Education cancels the class. Request for a refund must be made by contacting Katy ISD Community Education, It normally takes two to three weeks to process a refund check. Credit card refunds can normally be processed in two to three working days of the request. Returned Checks A $30.00 service fee will be collected for each returned check. Cancelled Classes Classes cancelled due to conflicts with regular school activities will be rescheduled. If Katy ISD cancels regular school classes because of weather or other reasons, Community Education classes are cancelled also. We will make every effort to call you if your class is cancelled, but we must have an accurate phone number. If your day or evening number changes, please update it with us. Holidays Community Education classes will not be held during regular school holidays, which include: January 18 (MLK ), March (Spring Break), March 25 (Holiday), May 27 (Holiday), May 30 (Memorial ). 4 4Easy Ways To Register... Registration will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you do not hear from us, you can assume you are enrolled. You will not be called to confirm that we ve received your registration. You will be notified of any time change, date change or class cancellation. Cancelled classes will be made up by extending the program. 1. Mail-In: (A) (B) CHECK - Fill out the registration form, make check or money order payable to Katy ISD Community Education. Mail to Community Education, 6301 S. Stadium Ln., Katy, TX MASTER CARD & VISA - Fill out the registration form to include credit/debit card number, expiration date, and name of cardholder, as it appears on the card. 2. Fax-In: Registrations charged to Master Card & VISA may be faxed to the Community Education office. Make a copy of the registration form and complete. DO NOT ENLARGE or REDUCE SIZE of registration form. Fax to Phone-In: Telephone Registration is available to individuals wishing to charge their fees to Master Card or VISA only! Please have the following information ready: course name and number, credit/debit card number, expiration date, and name of cardholder, as it appears on the card. Call Community Education at Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. 4. In-Person: You may register in the Community Education office, located in the KISD Educational Support Center at 6301 South Stadium Lane, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Late Registration: Registration must be received three business days prior to the first day of the class. 8 ABE/GED AND ESL CLASS INFORMATION For Additional Information or Any Questions About GED and ESL Programs Call Harris County Department of Education (713) *Do Not Contact Katy Community Education* Regarding Adult Basic Education/ GED and ESL Classes Harris County Department of Education (713) REGISTRATION PROCEDURES FOR ESL, ABE or GED CLASSES (This does not apply to the Community Education classes.) Student s Orientation Students planning to register for any HCDE Adult Education classes are required to attend orientation annually. Students will not be placed in a class without going through orientation. Progress Assessment All students in ESL, ABE or GED classes are required to take progress tests at the end of the semester or when they stop attending classes. Age Requirement Students must be 18 years old on the day of enrollment. Underage documentation is required if a student is under 18. Underage documentation includes a high school withdrawal. Required Registration Documentation Every student must have a picture ID, complete the Harris County Department of Education registration form and either the BEST PLUS oral/best Literacy (for ESL) or the TABE (for GED) baseline test Enrollment Requirement Adult Basic Education and GED classes need a minimum of 15 students enrolled to start a class and ESL classes need a minimum of 20 students to start a class. If ABE or GED class attendance drops below 15 ADA (average daily attendance), classes may be combined. If ESL class attendance drops below 15 ADA (average daily attendance), classes may be combined.

9 The Following Classes Are Under the Direction of Katy ISD Community Education 0200 Recreation 0208A West Coast Swing: Beginner In this class you will learn the basics of West Coast Swing so you can start dancing instead of watching all the fun. You will learn basic 6-count & 8-count patterns, and start putting together patterns that you like. West Coast Swing is great for dancing to blues, hip hop, slower C&W polkas, and most any slower paced music. If you are looking for a challenge and a lot of fun then this class is for you. Partners are encouraged but not necessary, as we will rotate partners. Limit 30 students. Traditional piano teachers teach note reading, while professional pianists use chords. In just this one session, you will learn all the chords you ll need to play any song. No prior musical instruction or knowledge is needed. A cost of $29 for workbook and practice CD is paid to instructor the first night of class. 10 0213A - Just ONCE Piano: How to Play by Ear Learn one of music s deepest mysteries: how to play songs without relying on music. A very practical presentation of music theory that includes predicting chord progressions, learning from recordings and transposing; all expressed in everyday language. This is an ideal follow-up to the Just ONCE Piano: For Busy People class and is open to anyone who has a basic understanding of chords on any instrument. Expand your musical horizon and free yourself from sheet music dependence. Be the life of the party! Prior experience with chords is recommended. A cost of $29 for workbook and practice CD is paid to instructor the first night of class. Course No. 0213A.1 Ed White Thursday 6:00 9:00 p.m (LGI) Tuition $40 Meeting Date May A - Piano Bling This three-hour workshop is a follow up to the Just ONCE Piano: For Busy People workshop. Piano Bling is a new class developed in response to student s questions about how to make their songs more interesting, or how to jazz them up a little. In this class you will learn over a dozen techniques to enhance simple versions of any song. If you are a beginner, then this class will help you become a better piano player. A cost of $29 for workbook and practice CD is paid to instructor the first night of class. Course No. 0214A.1 Ed White Thursday 6:00 9:00 p.m (LGI) Tuition $40 Meeting Date March A - Learn Piano On-Line Would you like to learn how to play piano? Do you have an internet connection? If so, then you can learn piano from the comfort of your own home! Every Friday for ten weeks you will be ed a 30 minute video piano lesson. This many lessons from a private teacher would easily cost you $250 or more. You will learn music reading, basic chords, hand position and how to play several of your favorite songs. Free sheet music and materials as well as weekly practice assignment are included with the class. Instructor T. J. Bazzoon has taught for 10 years. Course No. 0215A.1 T.J. Bazzoon On-Line Instructor Tuition $60 Start Date February A Guitar: Beginner This class will focus on fundamental guitar technique and musicianship. No prior skill or training is required. 11 0216B Guitar: Advancing Beginner This class will focus on improving guitar fundamentals and musicianship. Prior instruction is required. Students will practice basic technique, chord patterns and elements of musical style. The lessons will be applicable to all styles of music and will focus on practical and achievable musical results. An acoustic or electric guitar is required. Class is for adults ages 18 and older. Limit 10 students. Course No. 0216B.1 David Langford Thursdays 7:00 9:00 p.m Tuition $100 Meeting Dates March 24, 31, April 7, 14, 21, A Archery: Beginner Archery is a recreational and challenging sport. Archery is not only for target shooting and hunting, but a rewarding sport for the whole family. This class will provide instruction on how to shoot, how to choose the right bow/arrows, and archery safety. Students are not required to furnish their own bows and arrows. If you can draw a dot, a line, an S curve, and a circle, then you can learn this fascinating drawing technique. Learn to draw structured patterns using these elemental strokes and watch them emerge into works of art. We will start with beginner patterns, then gradually advance. 12 0304B Watercolor Intermediate In this class we will work on a different painting each week, concentrating on a compositional technique for each painting. You will need 3-6 single sheets of 140 lb. cold pressed watercolor paper, in addition to your watercolor paints and supplies. First Class: Bring any image already drawn on at least a half-sheet with a consideration toward using ONLY THREE PAINTS (red, yellow and blue) for color mixing. We will bring in our work for class critique each week. Limit 15 students. Students will learn to apply paint strokes that create simple, but fun & beautiful flowers, fruits, and leaves. The three projects completed will help you create future decorative designs which can be painted on wood, metal, furniture, etc. that can be used to decorate your home or as gifts. The instructor will provide the projects and necessary supplies. A supply fee of $60 is due to the instructor the first night of class. Registration deadline: Jan. 22nd. Limit 8 students. Course No. 0311A.1 Shar Gilman Tuesdays 6:30 9:00 p.m (9th grade center) Tuition $75 Meeting Dates February 23, March 1, 8, 22, 29, April D Jewelry Making: Basic Wire Wrapping - Necklace with a variety of wire-wrapped components Join us for this informative wire class. We will discuss tool usage and guidelines for using different types of wire. You will complete a fun, modern, necklace with a variety of wire-wrapped components and you will get a good foundation for basic wire wrapping. Registration deadline: 3pm, April 4th. You will measure and cut leather to custom fit your wrist and learn how to use decorative rivets to secure and/or embellish your customized jewelry. This class will give you basic knowledge to help you create your own designs and you will leave with a beautiful, on-trend bracelet. Registration deadline: 3pm, May 2nd. 13 0317F Jewelry Making: Basic Beading Multi-Strand Bracelet Love the look of multi-strands in a bracelet but not sure how to attach them? This class will have you doing simple tasks such as stringing beads, finishing off bracelets, as well as more advanced skills such as manipulation of multi-strands in one jewelry piece. Course No. 0317F.1 Wednesday Tuition $30 Meeting Date January 27 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Multiplicity 1306 Ave. A, Katy, TX H Jewelry Making: Beginning Metalsmithing 1 - Hammered Wire Button Bracelet Learn how to shape wire and how to harden it so that it maintains its form, allowing you to make custom designed jewelry components. You will leave this class with a custom designed bracelet using vintage buttons that are connected to each other using hand formed and hammered copper components. Registration deadline: 3pm, February 15th. A supply fee of $25 is due to Multiplicity. Minimum 2 students. Limit 8 students. Learn how to shape wire and harden it so that it maintains its form, allowing you to make custom designed jewelry components. You will create a fun, free form, fauxlariat necklace using your formed and hardened wire links, vintage buttons and gemstones. Come and learn how to use wire to add a modern, contemporary touch to your fashion accessory wardrobe. Registration deadline: 3pm, February 29. A supply fee of $25 is due to Multiplicity. Therefore, participants who voluntarily enroll in an exercise program do so, releasing and discharging Katy ISD from any and all claims or causes of actions. 0401A Basic Handgun 101 This class will cover basic handgun fundamentals. In this class, the student will be trained in all aspects of handgun safety from basic handling and sighting to how to clean and maintain the handgun. Students will also learn basic shooting stances, ammunition types, typical malfunctions, and how to safely store a handgun. The second day of class, the student will complete a live fire exercise at a the range utilizing a.22 caliber pistol. Students will be assisted by the instructors during the entire live fire exercise. $50 fee payable to the instructor the first night of class. Must be 18 years of age. This class prepares the student for the Texas License to Carry Handgun class. Limit 20 students. R. Subjects covered in the class are Use of Force, Non- Violent Dispute Resolution, Legal Aspects of Concealed Carry, and Safe Handling and Storage of Firearms. On the second day of class, students will be scheduled for the range qualification. Students must successfully complete a written test and a live fire qualification to pass the course. A $50 fee payable to the instructor the first night of class. Fee includes range fees. Must be 21 years of age. Limit 25 students. Hear experienced attorneys and law enforcement professionals separate legal fact from fiction; such as when you can legally shoot, what new Texas gun laws mean for you, and your second amendment rights. Course No. 0404A.1 Texas Law Shield Tuesday 6:30 9:00 p.m. Cafeteria Tuition $5 Meeting Dates February A - U.S. Citizenship Interview Preparation Enjoy your citizenship interview, not fear it! Remember that the next presidential election year is almost here and you must be a registered US citizen to vote. Appear for your citizenship interview with confidence and knowledge. Class is taught by a retired USCIS Officer who has conducted thousands of interviews. Class topics cover: N-400 Application for Naturalization; filing instructions; basic US history/ civics; relevant vocabulary; mock interview; study tips and much more. Class is taught in English and geared for lawful permanent residents who have or have not yet already filed form N-400. A mandatory workbook fee of $15 will be paid to the teacher (cash or check) on the first night of class. Limit 15 students.
