1 August 8, 2012 Dear Student Orientation Leader, We are excited that you are interested in becoming a Student Orientation Leader! Our Student Orientation Leaders are crucial in the success of our department and mission. The Student Orientation Leader position is one of the most exciting leadership opportunities available at Arizona State University. You have the potential to serve as extremely influential leaders, peer counselors, change agents, educators, friends, advisors, and team players. You play a critical role in the orientation experience of countless students. We hope that by now you can see the ways that you can help your fellow Sun Devils! We also hope that you will benefit fully from the myriad of opportunities to learn about yourself and others through your role as a Student Orientation Leader. Included in this packet you will find information that you need to complete the application.the application process is designed to give us the opportunity to learn about your experiences and your desire to hold the position. There are three (3) parts to the application process: Written Application/References: Due to the appropriate campus location by September 21, 2012 Interview: Individual interviews will be held the week of October 8-October 12, 2012 Notification: Candidates will be notified of their status by October 26, 2012 If you are selected as a 2012 Student Orientation Leader, you will be required to: Enroll in an 8-week, 1 credit hour spring training course UNI394, by January 1, 2013 Attend a Meet and Greet on November 9, 2012 Participate in a weekend retreat in January 12-13, 2013 Complete a Fall Training session on November 30, 2012 Complete a Spring Training session on March 8, 2013 Complete Orientation Rehearsal at your campus Again, we are excited that you have chosen to apply for a position as a Student Orientation Leader! 3 2013 Student Orientation Leader Job Description Position Description Student Orientation Leaders assist coordinating staff with the implementation of orientation programs, university wide. The goal of orientation programs is to provide keys to academic success for incoming students. Sun Devil Pride is a must! Duties Assist with implementation of orientation programs Facilitate discussions with students and guests Assist with set up and break down of program Assist new students with course enrollment Provide general university information Interact with program participants Facilitate small group discussion with students Provide campus tours at all programs for participants as necessary Provide high quality customer service to incoming students, guests, and ASU staff Assist, as needed, with general office duties in preparation for orientation Assist with new SOL recruitment, including recruitment activities at Fall Welcome Other duties as assigned Expectations Must be available to attend all mandatory scheduled meetings, trainings and programs, including SOL retreat Enroll in Spring 2013 SOL leadership course, UNI 394 Maintain a flexible and positive attitude in accordance with your position as a Student Orientation Leader Use and maintain your ASU account Be accessible to campus coordinators via phone and Assist at all programs at their home campus (as available) Assist with other campus programs (as available) Qualifications Full-time ASU undergraduate student Must be in good academic standing (2.5 GPA or above preferred) Must be in compliance with University Academic Integrity Policy and Student Code of Conduct Demonstrated leadership skills including, working in a team environment and time management Demonstrated personal skills and qualities including creativity, attention to details, and the ability to balance multiple tasks simultaneously Compensation/Benefits $7.65 an hour Excellent leadership opportunity Work closely with many divisions across the university Be a member of a respected student organization Networking opportunities Improve public speaking and communication skills Please direct any questions you may have to your respective campus coordinators Downtown Campus Bryan M. 4 Tips and Hints to a Successful Candidacy Assess your skills and comfort level by asking yourself How will this position affect my academic responsibilities? Do I have the academic skills to serve as an effective role model for other students? Will I be comfortable assisting students from backgrounds different than my own? Can I energize and get people involved and excited about ASU? Am I a good role model and team player? Am I able to keep calm and articulate myself in stressful situations? Do people regard me as confident and self-assured? Do I have the ability to think on my feet? Application Make an appointment to review your resume and cover letter with Career Services. Before you begin filling out this packet, read through it and take time to reflect on the questions in order to best express yourself. Keep all of your paperwork together in this packet. Be sure to answer all questions completely. Recommendation Be thoughtful of who you list as a reference. Be sure to ask selected individuals to be a reference for you. Do Your Homework Attend an information session to learn more about the position, as well as the selection process. Know the job description. You should come to the interview prepared to talk about the different areas of responsibility. Be familiar with the array of campus resources. Think about how a SOL might use these resources. Interview Tips What you wear will make an impression. Dress nicely, but you don t need to wear a suit. Come to the interview prepared with questions about the job, challenges and opportunities. You should be able to articulate your thoughts on these and other related areas: Your interest in the Student Orientation Leader position Your communication skills and problem solving/conflict resolution techniques Your leadership experiences and their impact on who you are today Your organizational and time management skills In Summary We want to see that you know yourself and can articulate your strengths and limitations. Be sure to represent YOU and not try to emulate someone else or what you think we are looking for.
