1 Other Summer Programs Offered by the Waterloo Catholic District School Board Summer Boost (Gr. 1-6) A FREE blended literacy and numeracy program offered to students entering grades 1-6 in September July 5-20, 2016 / 8:30 am-1:00 pm Six locations within the WCDSB. S A I N T Adult Learning & Continuing Education Centres S u m m e r Program Guide 2016 Summer 2-Credit Co-op (Gr. 11&12) A FREE Summer Credit Co-op Program for current WCDSB students in Grade 11 & 12 providing them an opportunity to experience a full-day unpaid work placement and earn credits during the summer. Pre-placement begins in May, taught by certified Co-op teachers. 4 mandatory in class sessions on Thurs. & Sat. in May & June. Work placements run from June 29 to August 4, 2016 *Note: students must be 16 years of age by June 29, 2016 Please contact your Catholic Secondary School Co-op or Guidance office for more information. Dual Credit Course (Gr. 12) A FREE 45 hour secondary school credit / college credit program offered in partnership with Conestoga College - Waterloo Campus. 3 Summer Credits Gr. 10 Civics (half credit course) CHV2OH This course explores rights and responsibilities associated with being an active citizen in a democratic society. Students will explore issues of civic importance such as healthy schools, community planning, environmental responsibility, and the influence of social media, while developing their understanding of the role of civic engagement and of political processes in the local, national, and/or global community. Students will apply the concepts of political thinking and the political inquiry process to investigate, and express informed opinions about, a range of political issues and developments that are both of significance in today's world and of personal interest to them. Prerequisite: None Gr. 10 Careers (half credit course) GLC2OH This course teaches students how to develop and achieve personal goals for future learning, work, and community involvement. Students will assess their interests, skills, and characteristics and investigate current economic and workplace trends, work opportunities, and ways to search for work. The course explores postsecondary learning and career options, prepares students for managing work and life transitions, and helps students focus on their goals through the development of a career plan. Prerequisite: None Gr. 11 English ENG3CI College This course is essential for success in ENG4C. Students will study the content, form, and style of a variety of informational and graphic texts, as well as literary texts from Canada and other countries, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms for practical and academic purposes. An important focus will be on using language with precision and clarity. Short Stories: Literary elements and characterization Media/Film Studies: Film analysis of media with a social justice theme Novel Study: To Kill a Mockingbird; characterization essay; significant passage analysis Film Study: novel and movie comparison Business Writing: letter of complaint, letter of request; resume and cover letter, job advertising/ad assessment Language and Writing: grammar and parts of speech; proper format of a 5-paragraph essay; writing with formality Gr. 11 English ENG3UI Gr. 12 English ENG4CI Gr. 12 English ENG4UI University This course is essential for success in ENG4U. Students will develop key skills for academic research, essay writing, and lecture-style presentations. Short Stories/Poetry renowned short stories and authors, study of popular genres Research and Development finding academic sources, evaluating websites, consolidating information, reporting on findings, properly citing sources, avoiding plagiarism Media logos, ethos, pathos, persuasive techniques, famous speeches, public speaking (voice/body language technique) Grammar and Language study College Students will analyze challenging literary texts; interpret informational and graphic texts; and create oral, written, and media texts. Focus will be on using language confidently, selecting reading strategies and developing greater control in writing. The course is intended to prepare students for university, college, or the workplace. Short Stories: Gender roles, self-identity, growing up female in Canada in the 1950's, love, power, control, human cruelty, closed mindedness, ritual, scapegoating, science and ethics. Media Studies: The influence of advertising in our culture. Novel Study: The American Dream and its discontents, The Roaring Twenties, The Jazz Age, Prohibition and the rise of organized crime, class divisions, excessive materialism, love and money. Film Study: The evolution of the American Dream through film. Business Writing: Communicating in the business world, proper format, business etiquette. Language and Writing: Identifying and solving common writing mistakes. University Students will analyze challenging texts from various time periods, countries and cultures; write analytical and argumentative essays and a major paper for an independent literary research project; and apply key concepts to analyze media works. An important focus will be on understanding academic language and using it coherently and confidently in discussion and argument. 4 5

5 Summer Credits Continued Gr. 12 Chemistry SCH4CI Gr. 11 Health for Life PPZ3OI College This course enables students to develop an understanding of chemistry through the study of matter and qualitative analysis, organic chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical calculations, and chemistry as it relates to the quality of the environment. Students will use a variety of laboratory techniques, develop skills in data collection and scientific analysis, and communicate scientific information using appropriate terminology. Emphasis will be placed on the role of chemistry in daily life and the effects of technological applications and processes on society and the environment. College Are you active, passionate about life and do you enjoy spending time outdoors? Health for Life helps students expand their knowledge and skills for every day healthy living! Learn important information about physical activity, food and nutrition, disease prevention, and many more interesting areas of health. Physical activity excursions help us stay active during the term! Throughout this course, students will develop the skills necessary to take charge of and improve their own health, as well as to encourage others to lead healthy lives! Gr. 12 International Business Fundamentals College/University BBB4M I If you have an interest in learning about how businesses operate, various business strategies, and the challenges that businesses face, this course is for you! Special focus on international markets and business will prepare you with effective business management strategies. This course will also provide you with the planning and organizational skills needed to be successful in any workplace. There is no pre-requisite for this course. Gr. 10 Computers: Information and Communication OPEN BTT2OI Managing and storing files, searching for files, finding files, moving and copying files for backup and storage, backup technology Create business documents, saving files, opening and editing, creating tabbed lists, bulleted lists and text alignment Creating flyers and business documents with graphics, basic tables in MS Word 2010 Database concepts using Word 2010 Spreadsheets Basic calculation (sum, average, max, min numbers, count cells, formatting cells: border, shading, merge, mass printing in Excel) Creating a business PowerPoint presentation using design, transition, animation, insert sound and video) Security and safety on the internet (safe browsing, Internet vocabulary, safe transactions, fake websites) Gr. 12 Ontario Literacy Course OLC4OI OPEN This course is designed to help students acquire and demonstrate the cross-curricular literacy skills that are evaluated by the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). Students who complete the course successfully will meet the provincial literacy requirement for graduation, while obtaining a Grade 12 English credit. Note: this credit will not be considered as a pre-requisite English credit for postsecondary programs. 8 9

6 NEW! Summer Credits Continued NEW! International Languages Summer Credits Gr. 11 Aesthetics TXA3E Workplace If you have an interest in cosmetology and aesthetics this course is for you! Hands on experience in our studios will give you practical knowledge - about current trends in makeup, special occasion makeup, day/evening makeup and contouring. Explore basic skincare principals and nail care. This course will also provide you with the planning, organizational and interpersonal skills needed to be successful in any workplace. There is no pre-requisite for this course. Gr. 12 Aesthetics TXA4E Workplace Ready to advance your cosmetology and aesthetics knowledge? Experience in our studios will give you advanced skincare knowledge, as well as implement principals and practical knowledge about cutting-edge trends in day/evening makeup, bridal and avant-garde fashion trends for a diverse clientele. Introduction to waxing and sugaring included. This course will also provide you with the planning, organizational and interpersonal skills needed to be successful in any workplace. Prerequisite for this course is TXA3E or TXJ3E. Note: an optional professional make-up starter kit available for a reasonable materials fee. Gr. 9/10 Chinese - LKBBD Introductory Level This course offers students intensive training in Chinese speaking (situational conversation, dialogue and recitations of classical pieces), enrich their vocabulary and better understand grammar through Chinese songs, stories, idiomatic expressions and media text; enliven Chinese culture through variety of activities including performing skits, making crafts, playing games and calligraphy writing. There is no prerequisite for this course. Gr. 9/10 Spanish - LWSBD Introductory Level More than 400 million speak Spanish. Why don't you? Learning to speak Spanish opens the door to a broad and exciting world. This course invites you to discover what are the sounds of Spanish, how Spanish forms and creates new words, and how these words are combined in a sentence. You will learn basic vocabulary and grammar that will allow you to communicate with Spanish speakers about everyday matters. There is no pre-requisite for this course. Gr. 11 Chinese - LKBCU Intermediate Level This course is designed to build on students' existing skills and to advance students' applications of vocabulary and grammar through study of more complex texts (media text and classical pieces); offers intensive training in Chinese essay writing (writing up skits, peer editing, and publishing ); enable students to gain deeper insight into Chinese culture through variety of activities including performing plays, making crafts, playing games and calligraphy writing. Prerequisite level 1 credit Chinese is required. Gr. 11 Spanish - LWSCU Intermediate Level LWS CU offers students the opportunity to further develop their knowledge of the Spanish language and to enhance their communication skills. You will continue to explore the cultures where Spanish is spoken. The course continues development of intermediate skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The primary goals of the course are the further enhancement of communicative competence, and social and cultural awareness. Students continue their study of Spanish by further expanding their knowledge of key vocabulary topics and grammar concepts. Prerequisite level 1 credit Spanish is required. Note: LWSBDI or LWSCUI (Spanish) and LKBBDI or LKBCUI (Chinese) will be offered if there is sufficient enrolment interest 10 11

Guidance, office staff and tutors will be available on select Wednesdays in July and August for academic support as well as to register for Term 1 Secondary Credit Day classes. St. Louis students (18+) may receive assistance with post-secondary applications, academic counselling and Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR). 9 International Languages-ELMENTARY Summer Program JR. KINDERGARTEN-GRADE 8 A *FREE* Children's Language Program Note: Children may learn two DIFFERENT languages each day.
