1 MATH DEPARTMENT COURSE DESCRIPTIONS The Mathematics Department provides a challenging curriculum that strives to meet the needs of a diverse student body by: Helping the student realize that the analytical reasoning skills he or she possesses are gifts of God and should be developed to their utmost potential. Helping students develop computational, procedural, and problem solving skills to provide a solid foundation for further study in mathematics. Emphasizing the connection between mathematical concepts and realworld situations. Helping students grow in their confidence of their math and reasoning abilities. Encouraging students who are gifted in mathematics to pursue a future in a math related field. LHSOC Graduation Requirements: Students are required to successfully complete a minimum of three years (units) of mathematics. Ideally, students will complete courses through Algebra 2 and beyond. Students are also required to complete six units of elective courses from the departments of their choice. College Requirements: Same as Orange Lutheran High School s graduation requirements, although most colleges recommend four years (units) of mathematics. The courses must be UC approved for the c requirement, and students must successfully complete Algebra 2. Students who wish to attend rigorous universities should plan on taking at least one AP course and four, or often times, five math courses. In order to take five mathematics courses, students need to take two courses in a single school year. AP Statistics can be taken concurrently with Honors PreCalculus or AP Calculus. Students should also know that AP Calculus is a highly valued course by universities for its analytical and rigorous nature. Students are required to complete only one unit of a College Preparatory Elective g course from any department for both the CSU and UC systems. In order to increase the likelihood of success in future math courses, the Math and Counseling Departments require students to repeat any semester in which they have not met the prerequisite before progressing to the next math course. If a student receives a grade of D or F in any course or a grade that prevents him/her from meeting a prerequisite, he or she may not repeat that course on campus at Orange Lutheran High during the school year. Any student who receives a grade of F in the first semester of any math course will be prohibited from advancing to the second semester.
2 PREALGEBRA (4020) Grade 9 (one unit) Offered On Campus Only This course is designed for the student to learn all the essential skills and concepts needed for success in Algebra 1. The course includes properties and operations of the real numbers developed in a logical and systematic way. It emphasizes the techniques for study habits necessary for successful completion of higher mathematics courses. PREREQUISITE: Freshmen Placement Test. ALGEBRA 1 (4110) (720OLO) Grades 912 This course teaches students to solve linear equations, use linear equations to solve word problems, solve systems of linear equations, factor & solve quadratic equations, and simplify expressions involving polynomials, exponents & radicals. Topics in Algebra 1 comprise a large portion of many college entrance exams. PREREQUISITE: For Freshmen: Freshmen Placement Test. For returning students: PreAlgebra with a minimum grade of 70% for each semester. ENRICHED ALGEBRA 1 (4120) Grades 912 This course covers the subjects included in Algebra 1 at a greater speed and in greater depth, emphasizing theory as well as the practical aspects of the subject. It will include exercises and exams of greater difficulty than in the standard Algebra 1 course. PREREQUISITE: Freshmen Placement Test. GEOMETRY (4130) (730OLO) Grades 912 This course is a study of geometric figures in two and three dimensions. It is designed to increase a student s understanding of spatial relations. Emphasis is also placed upon applying algebra to geometric problem solving and applying the basic terminology and concepts of geometry in a logical and organized manner, including formal proofs. PREREQUISITE: Freshmen must pass the Algebra Diagnostic Test in May. For returning students: Algebra (or Enriched Algebra) with a minimum grade of 70% for each semester. HONORS GEOMETRY (4510) Grades 912 This course is an advanced, accelerated version of the Geometry class. It will include exams and exercises of greater difficulty than in the standard Geometry course. PREREQUISITE: For Freshmen: Freshmen Placement Test. For returning students: Algebra with a minimum grade of 90% or Enriched Algebra with a minimum grade of 85% for each semester. HYBRID HONORS GEOMETRY (5402) Grades 912 This course is an advanced, accelerated version of the Geometry class. It will include exams and exercises of greater difficulty than in the standard Geometry course. The hybrid course requires an online component in addition to homework. Students considering a hybrid math course need to be independent learners, highly organized and selfmotivated. The flexibility of a hybrid course allows students to acquire knowledge at their own pace, putting in only the time needed to understand the material. This course is paired with Theology 1. 3 INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA 2 (4210) Grades This course will meet the college entrance requirement of three years of college prep mathematics. The course will continue the study of algebraic skills and concepts for students desiring a third and final year of high school mathematics. The emphasis will be on problem solving skills as opposed to theory. This course will not satisfy the Prerequisite for PreCalculus. PREREQUISITE: Algebra or Enriched Algebra and Geometry or Honors Geometry with a minimum grade of 60% for each semester. ALGEBRA 2 / TRIGONOMETRY (4310) (750OLO) Grades This course leads to an understanding of algebra beginning with review of Algebra 1 concepts and extending these same concepts and skills. Topics such as solving polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric equations are first encountered in this course. The study of angles and triangles are the main emphasis of the trigonometry section of the course. PREREQUISITE: Algebra (or Enriched Algebra) with a minimum grade of 70% and Geometry (or Honors Geometry) with a minimum grade of 70% for each semester. HONORS ALGEBRA 2 / TRIGONOMETRY (4520) Grades 912 This course covers the subjects included in Algebra 2/Trig at a greater speed and in greater depth, emphasizing theory as well as the practical aspects of the subject. Students in this course are expected to be proficient in the mathematical content of Algebra 1 and Geometry. An emphasis will be placed on written expression in the form of essays and projects. PREREQUISITE: Algebra with a minimum grade of 90% or Enriched Algebra with a minimum grade of 85% and Geometry with a minimum grade of 90% or Honors Geometry with a minimum grade 85% for each semester. HONORS PRECALCULUS (4530) Grades This course covers the subjects included in PreCalculus at a greater speed and in greater depth, emphasizing theory as well as the practical aspects of the subject. Students in this course are expected to be proficient in the mathematical content of Honors Algebra 2/Trigonometry. An emphasis will be placed on written expression in the form of essays and projects along with introducing the underlying theorems of Calculus. PREREQUISITE: Honors Algebra 2/Trigonometry with a minimum grade of 85% for each semester. CONSUMER MATH (4850) Grades (one unit) Offered On Campus Only This course is designed as a transitional course for those students who want to apply their math knowledge to everyday situations. Typical topics include: budgets, taxes, banking, and investing. PREREQUISITE: PreAlgebra with a minimum grade of 70% or Algebra or Geometry with a minimum grade of 60% for each semester. INTRODUCTION TO FINITE MATHEMATICS (4415) (775OLO) Grades This course emphasizes application and problem solving. Students will engage in the study of systems of numeration, finance, probability, apportionment, and statistics. This course provides students with a clearer understanding of many basic mathematical skills used in business, economics, health and social sciences. It will help prepare students for a college level liberal arts mathematics course. PREREQUISITE: Intermediate Algebra 2 or Algebra 2/Trigonometry with a minimum grade of 70% or Honors Algebra 2/Trigonometry with a minimum grade of 60% or PreCalculus with a minimum grade of 70% or Honors PreCalculus with a minimum grade of 60%. CALCULUS (4600) Grades This is a rigorous course in single variable Calculus. The course covers limits, differential calculus and
5 integral calculus, along with applications of derivatives and integrals. This course is not intended to prepare students for the Advanced Placement Calculus examination. PREREQUISITE: PreCalculus with a minimum grade of 80% for each semester or Honors PreCalculus with a minimum grade of 70% for each semester. AP STATISTICS (4420) Grades This course introduces students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. As such, students will be writing complete sentences and paragraphs in the analysis of experiments and data distributions. Students are exposed to four broad conceptual themes: exploring data, planning a study, anticipating patterns in advance and statistical inference. This class is taught as an extension class from Cal State Fullerton. Students will receive college credit (one semester of Math 120) through CSUF for taking this course. Please check the university or college of your choice for their specific credit transfer policy. Students who take AP Statistics are not required to take the AP exam. PREREQUISITE: PreCalculus with a minimum grade of 95% or Honors Algebra 2/Trigonometry with a minimum grade of 85% for each semester. AP CALCULUS AB (4610) Grades This is a rigorous course in single variable Calculus. The course covers limits, differential calculus and integral calculus, along with applications of derivatives and integrals. Students who successfully complete this course and pass the Advanced Placement examination may receive credit and/or advanced placement for a onesemester college calculus course. NOTE: AP Calculus AB requires a Wednesday morning review session from 7:15 am 8:15 am. Additionally, there will be time required outside of the school day for AP exam preparation. FEE: $89.00 fee to take the Advanced Placement exam. PREREQUISITE: Honors PreCalculus with a minimum grade of 85% for each semester or and pass the Calculus Entrance Exam in spring (or Calculus with a minimum grade of 90% for each semester and department chair approval.) AP CALCULUS BC (4620) Grades (one unit) UC approval course ( c ) Offered On Campus Only This is a rigorous course in single variable Calculus. Calculus BC is an extension of Calculus AB rather than an enhancement. AP Calculus BC includes a review of all Calculus AB topics. In addition, the course will include the following topics: Parametric, polar, and vector functions Analysis of planar curves given in parametric, polar, and vector form. Geometric interpretation of differential equations via slope fields. Numerical solution of differential equations using Euler s method. Derivatives of parametric, polar, and vector functions. Antiderivatives by simple partial fractions Polynomial Approximations and Taylor Series, Maclaurin Series, and Power Series. AP Calculus BC is designed to be a college level second semester calculus course which will prepare the student to succeed on the Advanced Placement test for Calculus BC. NOTE: AP Calculus BC meets for one block period each day. Additionally, there will be time required outside of the school day for AP exam preparation. Fee: $89.00 to take the Advanced Placement exam. PREREQUISITE: Honors PreCalculus with a minimum grade of 85% for each semester and pass the Calculus Entrance Exam in spring (or Calculus with a minimum grade of 90% for each semester and department chair approval.)
