2 Grade 9 Compulsory Courses ENGLISH FRENCH GEOGRAPHY MATHEMATICS SCIENCE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY RELIGION

3 ENGLISH ACADEMIC ENG1D1 This course is designed to develop the oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy skills that students need for success in their secondary school academic programs and in their daily lives. Students will analyze literary texts from contemporary and historical periods, interpret informational and graphic texts, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. An important focus will be on the use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. The course is intended to prepare students for the Grade 10 academic English course, which leads to university or college preparation courses in Grades 11 and 12. This course also addresses numerous Gospel values which are relevant to the issues studied in each unit. Prerequisite: None ENGLISH APPLIED ENG1P1 This course is designed to develop the key oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy skills students need for success in secondary school and daily life. Students will read, interpret, and create a variety of informational, literary, and graphic texts. An important focus will be on identifying and using appropriate strategies and processes to improve students comprehension of texts and to help them communicate clearly and effectively. The course is intended to prepare students for the Grade 10 applied English course, which leads to college or workplace preparation courses in Grades 11 and 12. This course also addresses numerous Gospel values which are relevant to the issues studied in each unit. Prerequisite: None ENGLISH LOCALLY DEVELOPED ENG1L1 This course provides foundational literacy and communication skills to prepare students for success in their daily lives, in the workplace, and in the English Grade 11 Workplace Preparation course. The course is organized by strands that develop listening and talking skills, reading and viewing skills, and writing skills. In all strands, the focus is on developing foundational literacy skills and in using language clearly and accurately in a variety of authentic contexts. Students develop strategies and put into practice the processes involved in talking, listening, reading, viewing, writing and thinking, and reflect regularly upon their growth in these areas. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become an effective communicator who listens actively and critically to understand in the light of gospel values; reads, understands and uses written materials effectively; and presents information and ideas honestly and with sensitivity to others. Prerequisite: None

4 FRENCH FRENCH ACADEMIC FSF1D1 This course emphasizes the further development of oral communication, reading, and writing skills. Students will build on and apply their knowledge of French while exploring a variety of themes, such as relationships, trends, and careers. Thematic readings, which include a selection of short stories, articles, and poems, will serve as stepping-stones to oral and written activities. Gospel values are integrated through prayer and reflection, giving witness, liturgy and paraliturgy, and curriculum and community resources. FRENCH APPLIED FSF1P1 This course emphasizes the further development of oral communication skills, using the theme of media; the development of oral communication skills will be integrated with the development of reading and writing skills. Students will expand their ability to understand and speak French through conversations, discussions, and presentations. Students will also read media-related short stories, articles, poems, and songs and write brief descriptions, letters, dialogues, and invitations. Gospel values are integrated through prayer and reflection, giving witness, liturgy and paraliturgy, and curriculum and community resources.

5 GEOGRAPHY OF CANADA ACADEMIC CGC1D1 This course explores Canada s distinct and changing character and the geographic systems and relationships that shape it. Students will investigate the interactions of natural and human systems within Canada, as well as Canada s economic, cultural, and environmental connections to other countries. Students will use a variety of geotechnologies and inquiry and communication methods to analyse and evaluate geographic issues and present their findings. GEOGRAPHY OF CANADA APPLIED CGC1P1 This course focuses on geographic issues that affect Canadians today. Students will draw on personal and everyday experiences to learn about Canada s distinct and changing character and the natural and human systems and global influences that shape the country. Students will use a variety of geotechnologies and inquiry and communication methods to examine practical geographic questions and communicate their findings.

6 MATHEMATICS MATHEMATICS ACADEMIC MPM1D1 This course enables students to develop understanding of mathematical concepts related to algebra, analytic geometry, and measurement and geometry through investigation, the effective use of technology, and abstract reasoning. Students will investigate relationships, which they will then generalize as equations of lines, and will determine the connections between different representations of a relationship. They will also explore relationships that emerge from the measurement of threedimensional objects and two-dimensional shapes. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multistep problems. MATHEMATICS APPLIED MFM1P1 This course enables students to develop understanding of mathematical concepts related to introductory algebra, proportional reasoning, and measurement and geometry through investigation, the effective use of technology, and hands-on activities. Students will investigate real-life examples to develop various representations of linear relationships, and will determine the connections between the representations. They will also explore certain relationships that emerge from the measurement of three-dimensional objects and two-dimensional shapes. Students will consolidate their mathematical skills as they solve problems and communicate their thinking. MATHEMATICS LOCALLY DEVELOPED MAT1L1 This course emphasizes further development of mathematical knowledge and skills to prepare students for success in their everyday lives, in the workplace, in the Grade 10 LDCC course, and in the Mathematics Grade 11 and Grade 12 Workplace Preparation courses. This course is organized by three strands related to money sense, measurement, and proportional reasoning. In all strands, the focus is on developing and consolidating key foundational mathematical concepts and skills by solving authentic, everyday problems. Students have opportunities to further develop their mathematical literacy and problem-solving skills and to continue developing their skills in reading, writing, and oral language through relevant and practical math activities. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a thinker who evaluates situations and solves problems reflectively and creatively.

8 SCIENCE ACADEMIC SNC1D1 This course enables students to understand essential concepts in biology, chemistry, earth and space science, and physics and to develop skills in the processes of scientific inquiry. Students will learn about scientific theories and pursue inquiries related to cell division and reproduction, atomic and molecular structures, properties of elements and compounds, the universe and space exploration, and the principles of static and current electricity. Students will reflect on their own faith journey and the teachings of Christ in exploring scientific issues and problems; and relate science knowledge to technological, social, and environmental knowledge. SCIENCE APPLIED SNC1P1 This course enables students to understand essential concepts in biology, chemistry, earth and space science, and physics and to develop practical skills in scientific investigation. Students will design and conduct investigations into practical problems and issues related to cell division and reproduction, the structure and properties of elements and compounds, astronomy and space exploration, and static and current electricity. Students will reflect on their own faith journey and the teachings of Christ in exploring scientific issues and problems; and to apply their knowledge of science to everyday situations. SCIENCE LOCALLY DEVELOPED SNC1L1 This course emphasizes reinforcing and strengthening science-related knowledge and skills, including scientific inquiry, critical thinking and the relationship between science, society, and the environment, to prepare students for success in everyday life, in the workplace and in the Science Grade 11 Workplace Preparation course. Students explore a range of topics including science in daily life, properties of common materials, life-sustaining processes in simple and complex organisms, and electrical circuits. Students have the opportunity to extend mathematical and scientific process skills and to continue developing their skills in reading, writing, and oral language through relevant and practical science activities. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a reflective and creative thinker who examines, evaluates and applies knowledge of interdependent systems (physical, political, ethical, socioeconomic and ecological) for the development of a just and compassionate society.

9 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY IN BUSINESS OPEN BTT1O1 This course introduces students to information and communication technology in a business environment and builds a foundation of digital literacy skills necessary for success in a technologically driven society. Students will develop word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, presentation software, and website design skills. Throughout the course, there is an emphasis on digital literacy, effective electronic research and communication skills, and current issues related to the impact of information and communication technology. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a responsible citizen who witnesses Catholic social teaching by promoting equality, democracy, and solidarity for a just, peaceful and compassionate society. NOTE: AS A SCHOOL WITH A TECHNOLOGY FOCUS AND LAPTOP PROGRAM, THIS IS A REQUIRED COURSE FOR ALL GRADE 9 STUDENTS.

10 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION BE WITH ME OPEN HRE1O1 This course invites students to a deeper understanding of both the joy and the demands of following in the way of Christ and living out the call to discipleship as it is described in the Scriptures. Using the Beatitudes as a guide, students examine the attitudes and actions that characterize the Christian life. Students will explore a variety of topics related to the themes of personhood, interpersonal relationships and sexuality. They are encouraged to understand and nurture within themselves the virtues which will enable them to deepen their relationship with God.

11 Grade 9 Elective Courses ARTS PHYSICAL EDUCATION INTEGRATED TECHNOLOGIES LEARNING STRATEGIES

12 DRAMATIC ARTS OPEN ADA1O1 This course emphasizes the active exploration of dramatic forms and techniques, using material from a wide range of authors, genres, and cultures. Students will construct, discuss, perform, and analyze drama, and then reflect on the experiences to develop an understanding of themselves, the art form, and the world around them. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become an effective communicator, who uses and integrates the Catholic faith tradition in the critical analysis of the arts, media, technology, and information systems to enhance the quality of life. Prerequisite: None MUSIC: TRADITIONAL INSTRUMENTAL BAND OPEN AMU1O1 It is aimed at developing technique, sensitivity, and imagination. Students will participate in creative activities that teach them to listen with understanding. They will also learn correct musical terminology and its appropriate use. Students MUST select from one of the following instruments: trumpet, trombone, flute, clarinet, alto sax, or tenor sax. This course presents values and content consistent with our mission as a Catholic Community and emphasizes the performance of music at a level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill. Prerequisite: None MUSIC: MODERN MUSIC OPEN AMC1O1 Student and instructor work together to guide projects based on skill level and interest. Modern technologies, creative activities, combined with music training lessons make for an outstanding music course. Students make choices in regards to any instrument or voice, music activities and music repertoire worth approximately 40% of the course. Music theory, rhythmic dictation, interval dictation, music history, music computer composition and two recorded solo performances (private) are required activities worth approximately 60% of the course. This course presents values and content consistent with our mission as a Catholic Community. Beginning music students are welcome, however weekly, half-hour, private, music lessons are strongly recommended. Prerequisite: None VISUAL ARTS OPEN AVI1O1 Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques, and styles. They will learn and use methods of analysis and criticism and will study the characteristics of particular historical art periods and a selection of Canadian art and the art of other cultures. Comprehensive in nature, some studio projects will be integrated with historical/cultural aspects while others will connect to various techniques and media usage. Students will be prepared through this and subsequent courses to go on to post secondary courses in fine arts, design, graphics, graphics or animation. This course offers an overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study and presents values and content consistent with our mission as a Catholic Community. Prerequisite: None

13 PHYSICAL EDUCATION AT ST.AUGUSTINE CHS HEALTHY ACTIVE LIVING EDUCATION OPEN PPL1OM (MALE) PPL1OF (FEMALE) Students will learn movement skills and principles, ways to improve personal fitness, physical competence and safety/injury prevention. They will investigate issues related to healthy sexuality, and drug abuse including tobacco and alcohol, presented in a manner which is consistent with our mission as a Catholic community. They will participate in activities designed to develop goal getting, community, and social skills. This course emphasizes students daily participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living and encourages respect for the dignity and welfare of self and others and promotes the living of gospel values.

14 TECHNOLOGY EXPLORING TECHNOLOGIES (TECH STUDIES) OPEN TIJ1O1 This course enables students to understand the technological and computer concepts they need in order to design, develop, and build usable products and/or deliver services, and to pursue further technological studies. Students will use the technological design process and a variety of tools and software to solve problems, complete projects and strengthen their communication skills. Research, design and physical testing of model prototypes as well as software applications such as Flash, Photoshop and an introduction to CAD are included in this TECHNOLOGICAL design program. Note: This program should not be confused with BTT1O1 (Information Technology) which is a Business Studies credit

15 SPECIAL EDUCATION LEARNING STRATEGIES : SKILLS FOR SUCCESS IN HIGH SCHOOL OPEN GLE1O1 / BTT1O2 This course is desemestered and runs during period 1 for the full year in conjunction with BTT1O2 (Introduction to Information Technology in Business). See the BTT1O1 course description for the linked course. This course introduces students to learning theories and strategies, prepares them to become effective independent learners, and helps them increase their personal management skills, both in school and in other contexts. Students will learn how to use reflective thinking, structured inquiry, active reading, memorization, goal-setting strategies, note taking, study and test taking skills, as well as time and stressmanagement skills to identify and work towards their goals. The course will also help students identify their preferred ways of learning and use this knowledge to increase their confidence, motivation, and ability to learn. This course is for students who are currently receiving Special Education Services. This course presents values and content consistent with our mission as a Catholic community.
