4 STUART WILLIAMS & Lakes College ALUMNI I have always loved sport. I ve played football and golf from a very young age, and I always imagined working in the industry. I decided to study Sport at Lakes College, after leaving school I initially enrolled on a BTEC First Diploma in Sport (Level 2). After completing this course, I chose to progress further, with the aim of eventually studying a university level course. Once I completed a BTEC National Diploma (Level 3) in Sport in 2008, I had gained enough qualifications and experience to attend university and I enrolled on a Sports Development with Coaching course at Loughborough University. I absolutely loved my time at university and whilst there, I decided that I would like to teach what I had learned to others; people aspiring to achieve similar things to me. This decision led me on to a PGCE course, which I studied part time at the college, as well as volunteering both in the ActivZone facility and as a tutor in the sports department. This was a great experience and one that cemented my ambition of becoming a sports teacher. I m due to begin full time employment as a sports tutor at Lakes College and I really can t wait to make a start. I m really looking forward to ensuring that my learners develop their own academic knowledge, helping them move into a successful career. 6 7

7 STEPHANIE NEEN & Lakes College ALUMNI I started at Lakes College in 2012 after deciding that I needed to make a career change. I was working in central London in retail & after realising how expensive it was, I chose to move home to West Cumbria to pursue a career in hairdressing. I had always wanted to be a hairdresser & I felt that it wasn t too late to change my career path. For me an Apprenticeship was the right route to take as it gave me the opportunity to gain quality experience in the industry & achieve a reputable qualification. I secured work at a local salon - Hair at Number 4 in Egremont & enrolled on the NQV Level 2 in Hairdressing with Lakes, attending college one day a week. The tutors in the Hairdressing department are great. There were times where I was really stressed out about my progress but they spent a lot of time with me, working on the aspects of the trade that I didn t feel comfortable with & helping me improve. If I was to give any advice to future students, it would be to practise as much as possible, ask lots of questions & be as creative as possible. One thing that I love about my job is when people say I could never have done that myself! I love being creative, using my initiative & seeing my customers happy with the result! 12 13

9 BEVERLEY WAUGH & Lakes College ALUMNI I came to Lakes College in 2010 to study on the Access to Higher Education course. Before coming to college, I d always aspired to be a nurse, having worked as a carer in a local nursing home. I wasn t completely sure what I wanted to study and decided to take a year out after my A Levels. This gave me time to work in the industry and gather perspective on how to pursue my dream career. After spending a year in work and away from education, I joined the Access course which helped me to progress onto a degree in children s nursing at London s South Bank University. The three year course gave me the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in nursing and I managed to secure a work placement in the country s largest children s hospital, Great Ormond Street. After graduating, I applied for a job at Great Ormond Street Hospital as a newly qualified nurse in the rotation programme, and was selected from 500 applicants to fill one of just 20 positions. I ll be carrying out general nursing duties in three clinical areas, which I hope to be surgery, oncology and intensive care

11 VICTORIA NICHOLSON & Lakes College ALUMNI I decided to join Lakes College after moving from Cheshire to be nearer to my family, who are based in West Cumbria. Since leaving school I had worked in the equine industry, however after the move I was unable to find work in a similar role. I made the decision to retrain in a different industry and chose to follow in my dad s footsteps and study electrical engineering. After popping in to the college for a chat about my options with a member of staff, I joined the Access to Higher Education course. This prepared me for university level learning, and once I had completed the course I enrolled on the HNC in Electrical Engineering. I was also lucky enough to gain employment throughout my studies, initially working as a Trainee Electrical Engineer for North West Projects at Westlakes Science Park. While studying for my HNC, I was promoted and became a fully qualified Electrical Engineer, working on quotes for jobs, detail design and documentation management. My advice to students would be, that it s never too late to retrain. The industry that I worked in previously is a totally different discipline to where I m employed today, but taking the HNC has certainly opened a lot of doors for me in my new position
