6 QUALIFICATIONS QUALIFICATIONS Whether you would like to enhance your career prospects, get back into education after a break, or study a degree level course, we have a course to suit you. Access to Higher Education Our Access to Higher Education courses are ideal for people who may have been out of education for a while and would like to study at university but have not got the necessary qualifications. These courses are designed to prepare you with the skills and knowledge needed to progress, as well as supporting you to manage your studies. All students will be required to take an initial assessment at application, which will identify the right level for you to begin your studies. Level 1 / 2 Students beginning their Access course on Levels 1 or 2 will be given the skills and knowledge to prepare them for higher level courses. Each Level takes one year to complete and the course provides learners with the underpinning skills and knowledge needed to prepare you for a specialised and more advanced Access programme. Level 3 At Level 3, you will study a more advanced programme of work for one year, which will specialise in a particular pathway (see course pages). You will explore a range of modules related to particular fields, which will prepare you for further study, either at Trafford College or university. No matter what level you start at, our experienced tutors will teach you at a pace and style that is right for you, and will give you specialised guidance in a stimulating environment. Higher Education & Professional We offer a range of full time and part time higher education courses, from Foundation Degrees to HNC/Ds, designed to help you achieve a higher level qualification more flexibly. Our professional studies courses are ideal for people looking to take the next step in their career. Foundation Degrees (FND) Our Foundation Degree programmes are delivered in partnership with universities, and are designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge for a particular area of work. These flexible courses allow students to study and work at the same time, and are ideal for people who are looking to develop their careers. Equivalent to the first two years of a university degree course, students often top-up to a full honours degree at university. HNC/HND Higher National Certificates (HNC) and Higher National Diplomas (HND) are work-related programmes with a focus on practical learning. They provide a pathway into a particular career, help improve job prospects, and can be a stepping stone onto a full degree programme. They are often studied part time alongside employment. Professional Courses Our range of professional courses are for people who are already in a particular area of work or are pursuing employment within a certain sector and would like to gain a formal qualification. Often studied in the evening, you could also benefit from gaining entry onto professional bodies. Don t worry, we are here to help At Trafford College we know the struggles of returning to education after time out which is why we take the time to understand your needs and develop support around you. FINANCE You may have concerns about the cost of returning to education, or wonder how you will balance work and family life with a college course. There are a range of financial support services available to both Access and Higher Education students. Personal Tutor When you enrol on your course, you will be teamed up with a Personal Tutor who will provide you with the support and guidance needed throughout your time at College. You will meet regularly with your Personal Tutor to discuss your progress and any concerns that you may have along the way. If you have a problem which they are unable to resolve, they will always refer you to someone who can. itrafford The College student intranet gives you 24 hour access to course materials and resources from wherever you are. It is your gateway for keeping up to date with all the latest news and events from around College, and useful information about our services. Careers and Guidance Our expert team of careers and guidance staff are on hand to offer impartial advice about your next step after your college course. From supporting you with university applications and employment searches, to interview techniques and CV writing, they have extensive knowledge and resources to help you make the right decisions about your future. Counselling We understand that there may be other factors that can affect your progress and personal development whilst at college. This is why the College has a professional Counsellor on site with whom you can talk to in confidence about any worries you may have. Disability Support If you have any physical disabilities, or visual or hearing impairments, we will do our best to provide you with all the support, equipment, access and learning resources you might need throughout your time at college. Support is confidential and provided according to individual needs. Additional Learning Support (ALS) If you are concerned about how you will cope with your course, or simply want to improve your study skills, ALS can help. Support available ranges from managing revision and developing literacy and numeracy skills, to dyslexia support and improving spelling and grammar. This service is available throughout your studies and is designed to suit your needs, helping boost your confidence and achieve your goals. Access to Higher Education (including BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art & Design) Tuition Fees Students who are aged 18 years or under on 31 August 2015 do not have to pay tuition or exam fees. Tuition and exam fees will vary according to the course length and type of qualification for students who are aged 19 or over on 1 September Help with Tuition Fees Depending on your individual age or circumstances, some students may qualify for help with the cost of fees. Discretionary Learner Support Fund Trafford College has limited funding to offer support to students experiencing financial hardship to help with course related costs. Please contact Student Services for further information. Higher Education Full Time Higher Education For entry in September 2015, financial help is available from Student Finance England for full time Higher Education courses such as Foundation Degrees, and HNDs. There are a variety of loans and grants available that can help with living costs. Students may also apply for a loan to cover tuition fees. Further information is available from Part Time Higher Education For entry in September 2015, students may apply for a loan from Student Finance England to cover tuition costs. Further information is available from Financial Support for Learners Government funds to providers for supporting students who are experiencing continual financial difficulty whilst in Higher Education are currently changing. Overseas students If you are an overseas student and not a UK, EU or a Swiss National who has resided in the UK, European Economic Association (EEA) or Switzerland for at least three years, more information about funding opportunities is available from the UK Border Agency (ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk). 24+ Advanced Learning Loans These loans are available to students aged 24 years or older, who would like to study a Level 3 or Level 4 qualification, including Access to Higher Education programmes. Similar to university student loans, they will meet the upfront cost of your course and be paid directly to the College on your behalf. You will not begin to pay back your loan until you are earning over 21,000. If your loan is for an Access to Higher Education qualification, you will not have to pay it back if you progress and complete a higher education course at university. 8 GRADUATION GRADUATION To celebrate the milestone in your education, we host a Graduation ceremony at the end of each academic year to commend all of your hard work and dedication throughout the duration of your course. 9 HOW TO HOW TO Once you have decided on your course, you will need to apply to the College. 11 HIGHER APPRENTICESHIPS HIGHER APPRENTICESHIPS Already employed and thinking about promotion in the next couple of years? Want more than just a qualification to prove you can perform at a higher level? Looking to advance yourself, whilst drawing on the support and backing of your company? As the UK economy continues to grow, employers will require an increased amount of highly skilled employees to meet business demand. This is why our Higher Apprenticeship programmes are a suitable alternative to university as they allow learners to enhance their practical skills, whilst receiving an industry recognised qualification. Higher Apprenticeships are ideal for learners who would like to continue in their current job role, whilst working towards a higher qualification at the same time. As with any Apprenticeship, the Higher Apprenticeship includes a work-based learning programme and leads to a nationally recognised qualification at level 4 and above: Higher Apprenticeship qualifications explained Level 4 & 5 is equivalent to a HNC, HND or FND Level 6 is equivalent to a Bachelor s Degree Level 7 is equivalent to a Master s Degree We offer a range of alternative routes to university, and many of our Apprentices go on to study a Higher Education programme after they have finished their course. 16 BUSINESS & ACCOUNTANCY CILEx 3 CERTIFICATE/DIPLOMA IN LAW & PRACTICE The CILEx course gives an introduction to Law & Practice and requires students to understand professional legal skills necessary to research the Law and work with clients to enhance career progression. This University-franchised Honours Degree in Leadership and Management is a work-based programme that is tailored to provide academic recognition of learning undertaken primarily in the workplace. The programme is ideal for those who recognise the potential of learning through work and who are prepared to assume a high level of responsibility for their own learning. The programme draws on a flexible framework to accredit work based and work related learning, converting them into University credits. This realises real value from previous certificated qualifications and experience held by the learner and can reduce the overall time to gain the qualification. Learners access taught elements at workshops or online and through distance learning. A strong emphasis is placed on work based projects, which forms a significant element of the assessed material.
