4 There is great flexibility within this framework. Your starting point will depend on your skills, experience and qualifications. A Range of Awards You don t have to go to university... to go to university! Foundation Year ENT Full-time: 1 year Part-time: 2 years HNC Work related course Full-time: 2 years Part-time: 3/4 years HND Work based course Full-time: 2 years Part-time: 3 years FOUNDATION DEGREE Usually full-time: 3 years Third year possible to do part-time BA / BSC (HONS) POST-GRADUATE COURSE Foundation Year The Foundation Year currently links to degrees in a wide range of subject areas to provide a route onto your chosen degree course, if you don t have the required entry qualifications. The content of the Foundation Year is tailored appropriately to your chosen degree and helps you to develop the study skills and academic knowledge needed to start Year 1 of your degree course with confidence. Higher National Certificate (HNC) A Higher National Certificate (HNC) takes one year of full time study or 2 years of part-time study. These qualifications can then lead onto a Higher National Diploma. Higher National Diploma (HND) A Higher National Diploma (HND) is a work-related course provided by further and higher education colleges in the UK. A full-time HND takes two years to complete, while a part-time HND takes three to four years. Generally a HND is equivalent to second year of university. A HND can be converted into an Honours degree with additional study. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland a HNC/HND is Level 5 on the National Qualifications Framework. What is the benefit of HNC/HND? HNCs/HNDs are vocationally focussed and therefore can lead straight to a career. Moreover, they are a great stepping stone to a higher qualification. HNCs can allow access into the second year of a bachelors degree, whereas HNDs can allow entry into the second or third year. Foundation degree Foundation degrees are work-based qualifications in a range of vocational areas. They are often available by either part-time or full-time study. Foundation degrees usually take two years to complete full-time or within three years if studied part-time. All Foundation degrees offer a guaranteed progression route to at least one named honours degree at one of our partner universities. Developed with local employers to meet skills shortages, all Foundation degrees have a substantial amount of work-based learning and assessment including, in some cases, delivery in the workplace, with all students having the support of a work-place mentor. BA / BSc (Hons) A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Sciences Honours degree (360 credits) is usually a full-time academic course lasting for three years. Students progressing from a Foundation degree or Higher National route may be able to take the third year of an Honours degree on a full or part-time basis. On completion, students may be eligible for post-graduate study such as a Master of Arts or Sciences. South Staffordshire College delivers some of its Higher Education in partnership with Wolverhampton University and Staffordshire University. A Range of Awards For those without specific AS/A Level qualifications Equivalent to year 2 of Degree Equivalent to year 2 of Honours Degree COLLEGE Higher Education means you can study a Foundation degree, a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or a Higher National Diploma (HND), or a Diploma of Higher Education. South Staffordshire College also works with Edexcel & Pearson to offer a flexible range of HNC and HND qualifications at levels 4 and

41 Leanne Humphries Media Jon Barker Business Congratulations to Leanne Humphries Leanne first came to college to study the National Diploma in Media Production for two years. She finished the course with a distinction and progressed to Higher Education. Leanne continued to study at Lichfield Campus and completed the Higher National Diploma in Media Moving Image, with a distinction and began working for South Staffordshire College in Her role has always remained within Armoris Media the College s video production company. More recently, her role has broadened and she has been a work based mentor to Foundation degree Film and Television learners, whilst also continuing to run Armoris for the last few years. Leanne is now a Lecturer for FdSc and BSc students. Regarding her more recent achievement, she decided to do a MSc Digital Feature Film Production. Leanne said I took on the challenge of studying a full time Masters Degree with Staffordshire University, in my spare time over just five months, which was absolutely exhausting, but I passed the course with Distinctions in all modules, which means that I have a First Class Masters Degree (Masters with Distinction). I graduated at Staffordshire University in July 2012 and although the course was a challenge, I was thrilled that the hard work had paid off. Not only did Leanne work full time and study for her Masters Degree, but she also arranged her wedding at the same time. I studied at Lichfield Campus for two years gaining a HNC in Business, then progressed on to the top-up degree in Business where I achieved a 1st Class Honours Degree which took a further two years. All four years were part-time and involved attending South Staffordshire College two evenings a week. I work for Barratt Homes (West Midlands) as a Site Manager, where during the four years of study I have also gained three NHBC Pride in the Job Quality Awards and one Seal of Excellence Award which are coveted awards within the house building industry. I have a young family, a daughter who is now nine and a son who is one (adding to the stress of gaining the degree and work). Balancing my studies, work and family life has been hard work which I could not have done without the support of my wife and family. The reason I started the course was to progress my career within the house building industry and to show the level of learning ability that I have. I believe achieving my degree has helped improve my abilities at work and has already been noticed by my senior managers. The lecturers, especially Sharon Inglis, have been very supportive throughout the course and I would recommend anyone who is willing to put the hard work and effort in to attend South Staffordshire College. Higher Education - Success Stories Kerry Veale Foundation Degree Early Childhood Studies Work Placement Officer for Lichfield Cache Level 2 and Cannock Cache Level 2 and 3. I set up my own private day nursery which I ran for 5 years caring for children between the ages of 2 and 8. Once the nursery was established I decided to attend South Staffordshire College to embark on my Foundation degree in early childhood education which I completed in July Our Customers are Satisfied! A recent study of our HE students showed that: 94% felt that the teaching was good or very good 95% felt they were making good progress with their studies 94% said their tutors encouraged high standards of work 94% said that deadlines for handing in work were clearly stated 91% are satisfied with their course. National Student Survey (NSS): 100% felt that staff are good at explaining things; they have made the subject interesting, are enthusiastic and the course is well organised 100% report that their timetable is flexible to fit in with their lives 94% feel that their communication skills have developed. As my experience grew I felt I could best utilise my skills by helping others wishing to follow a Childcare career, therefore when an opportunity arose for me to become a Placement Officer for South Staffordshire College, I felt this was an opportunity I could not pass. I therefore changed my own career and now work as a member of the Childcare department
