1 Southern Vales Christian College We welcome our school community to the 2015 school year. I would like to extend a special welcome to the new families in our College. The school year has begun with such a sense of expectation. Our teachers have worked very hard producing units of work which develop skills and build on understanding that are engaging for students. Our theme for 2015 is God is Good, with the focus scripture Psalm 34:8 - Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him. This year we have set our students a challenge to get to know God and to build a relationship with Him. They will be able to say that they have tasted and seen that God is good. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the following new staff this year: Kylie Cook (Year 2 MV), Cathy Rowley (Year 4 MV), Eric Spangenberg (Psychology/ Humanities), Laura Sklaptis (English Studies/ Humanities) and Jamie Trezise (VET Hospitality Trainer). To begin the year, there is a time for the College community to meet together at the Friday Family Fun afternoons which are being held at each campus. Aldinga, Friday 20 February and Morphett Vale, Friday 27 February; running from 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm. There will be fun activities for the whole family. All College families are most welcome. There are many wonderful things in store in 2015 and we are looking forward to journeying with you this year. Mrs Jenny Nelson, Principal Congratulations to all of our 2014 Year 12 students on successfully attaining their SACE. With 64% of all the Stage 2 grades being in the A and B range, we acknowledge the outstanding effort put in by both students and teachers. Alex Matusica, Dux of Year 12 (pictured), Gabby Tyler and Laura Kalfas all gained an ATAR score over 90. Gabby Tyler, Lauren Daniell and Ashley Goodwin obtained merits (A+) in Stage 2 subjects with their efforts being acknowledged at the SACE Merit Ceremony at Government House. The ceremony provides an opportunity for the South Australian community to celebrate the outstanding success of Stage 2 students and recognise their commitment to excellence. A special mention to the Year 12 students who achieved A grades in one or more subject: Brianna Brown, Gabrielle Burtt, Katrina France, Jesse Hollier, Laura Kalfas, Tayla Martin, Alex Matusica, Victoria Trebilco, Adien Treleaven, Gabby Tyler and Lois Woodberry. The future directions of our students are diverse; with University placements TAFE enrolments, Police and Navy applications, a Soccer Scholarship to the USA, Apprenticeships, students gaining employment and the following University placements: Adelaide University Bachelor Teaching/Bachelor Arts, Bachelor Science Space SC and Atrophysics, Bachelor of Teaching/ Bachelor Science University of South Australia Bachelor Business Tour and Event Management, Bachelor Info Tech (Games and Ent), Bachelor Nursing, Bachelor Engineering Honours Civil and Architecture Flinders University Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor Educ. 2 Please note the Term dates for the 2015 school year. Term 1: Tuesday 3 February Friday 10 April (1 pm) Term 2: Tuesday 28 April Friday 3 July (1 pm) Term 3: Wednesday 22 July Friday 25 September (1 pm) Term 4: Tuesday 13 October Friday 11 December (time TBA) Week 3, February Our annual camp for Year 11 and 12s is a great opportunity for students from both campuses to connect with each other and get to know some of their key teachers for the year. Elevate Education presented in our study sessions to equip our students with the skills to begin their study habits well. Mylor Camp offers challenging activities for the students, such as the High Ropes for the Year 12 students. Students enjoyed some praise and worship times with our Chaplain Ryan sharing and Mr Snape and Year 12 student Ashley playing music. Students comments: On the Year 11/12 camp, I really enjoyed the activities, especially the Flying Fox and canoeing. They were a lot of fun. I also liked the study sessions we did as it will help me this year and the next. Courtney, Year 11 I found the opportunity to get to know other students and teachers really enjoyable as it helps give the year a good start. The High ropes activity and Giant Swing were particularly enjoyable because it was so challenging but rewarding and fun at the same time. Amaya, Year 12 I enjoyed the Year 11/12 camp because it was a good way to get to know the Year 11s and the teachers, as well as bond with the Year 12s. I found the Essay Writing Skills session helpful as although I thought I knew how to write good essays, I found the tips and skills really interesting and a good way to refresh my memory. Last year saw the College beginning initiatives such as Tournament of Minds, Philosophy Classes, face painting lessons, Chess Clubs, Chess Tournaments, and Oliphant Science Competition. These initiatives spanned Year 2 - Year 10. It also saw our renewed involvement in Debating SA after a decade break. There was a number of special guest experts who presented in a variety of year levels and contexts. This was made possible through the committed, hands-on teamwork of the Staff Champions. We will be continuing to Staff Family Fun Day to build on the strengths and successes of this program in our Extended Learning Program A focus of our program in last year s Term 4 was on teacher identification of our Year 3-7 students in need of further extension in their learning. If you are interested in finding out more about the Extended Learning Program 2015, please contact me directly on rebecca. lemke@svcc.sa.edu.au with any of your questions. Have a blessed school year. Ms Rebecca Lemke, Extended Learning Coordinator Welcome to School - Aien, Elijah, Danielle, Aneka, Rachael, Kaitlin, Joel, Chloe, Rose, Jamie, Solomon, Conan, Piper, Matthew and Minnie On Tuesday 27 January, the College staff and their families were treated to a Staff Family Fun Day to kick off the new school year. In Week 1, the Year 8-10 students took part in Elevate Education Study Sessions that equipped the students with easy and useful study tips. We learnt about mindmapping and dynamic reading. Please ensure that the College hat is brought to school every day. The idea behind this challenge is to follow examples that heroes of the Bible have set. Their example should impact every area of our life. Challenges are set by teachers that vary from being a participant, to personal development, to service towards others and leadership. The Year 9 Camp in Term 3 will feature as one of their major challenges with other challenges that include actively engaging with school events and community volunteer work. We are excited about this program that translates much of what students learn in Year 9 to a fun challenge where points are awarded and the students hard work is acknowledged.
