1 Sattler Christian College Term 3 Week 3 In this newsletter: From the Principal Sharing with others about Sattler Tonight we have an Open Council Meeting at 7:30pm. Prior to the Open Council Meeting we are having an information session about the Sattler Middle School at 6:30pm. That session will also be held in the library. Everyone is welcome to attend this session but it especially for the benefit of parents with children in year 5 and above who are considering whether or not to send their children to our Middle School. I am very proud of the Sattler Middle School and I want to strongly commend it to our families and to others beyond our school community. The Middle School at Sattler provides a dynamic and nurturing educational programme. There are indeed some real advantages to being small. We have a great staffing team in the Middle School and we are able to provide great care and tuition for each student as well as diverse, creative and practical learning opportunities. If you know anyone who may be interested in our Middle School please encourage them to come along to tonight s session. But even if it wasn t, I would be keen to do so. This is a wonderful school! I have been involved with a number of schools over the past 30 years and Sattler has some very special and precious qualities. I know that our families also recognise this and it is evidenced in the full list below of responses made by our families to the question: What do you like most about Sattler? on our school community survey at the end of last year Small school, quiet area, friendly staff The feeling that people really care Wonderful staff and small class sizes Family feeling, teachers attitude Dedicated teachers CHRISTIAN SCHOOL Small size, dedicated staff, friendly welcoming atmosphere, love of children It's potential, the fact that it goes from ELC to Middle School - no change in school required. Specific teachers and their approach to working with parents in supporting students to learn both curriculum and personally The excellent values, morals and standards passed through its teaching methods and ethos. A very community based school, extremely friendly, welcoming and genuinely caring of its students and associated families...this is clearly felt and seen. We have had THE most wonderful teacher (Mrs Bec Cholmondeley) for our introductory year to Sattler. She is an absolute credit to the school. The caring nature in which everything is undertaken and the wonderful teachers. Teachers Christian values and small community Small school, small class sizes and Christian education. Community events i.e. breakfasts etc Small class. Teachers able to give care and attention to all students Caring, Loving Environment. Staff dedication to students academic and social development. Great communication between staff and parents. Location The nurturing environment and family inclusive culture Term 3 Week

2 From previous page I like that it is not a very large school where you can get lost in numbers, it is nice that even after only 6 months in the primary school all staff seem to know Clara and recall her name. It also gives the school a relaxed feel for the children. The ed homework and the fact that teachers are great at letting you know what is going on with your child. That it's a small community with a focus on the important things in life Person centred, not subject centred programs Friendliness of staff and students. Small rural school environment. The caring and happy staff. The educators are very experienced with excellent programmes It is close to home. Small community feel Christian values Small classes and individual attention to students. Caring environment. Christian values I like that it is only a small school. I like that it is a small school and therefore my child is not just a name. The teachers are very approachable The small tight-knit community, based on similar family values Small community atmosphere, Christian values, Excellent teaching staff Size. Loving teachers, bush setting, small classes The family atmosphere. That the staff care about the kids not just for them. The kids are happy and learning at the same time. This isn't easy to achieve. I like the bush land surroundings, the caring attitude of the staff. The staff response to events that happen with in the school grounds is quick and well communicated to parents. Small classes and one on one learning for the boys, It's loving, nurturing, Christian approach to all of the children, and the very strong partnership between teachers and parents The size of the school and the commitment of the staff to the students. Small size, more personal connection between staff and families That it is smaller school and all the teachers know every child Small class sizes This is a great list which highlights much about Sattler that we can appreciate and celebrate. Of course Sattler isn t perfect and there are still areas that the school will continue to explore and improve in. In the meantime though let s continue to enjoy and value what we have here and can I encourage you to share positively about our school with one another and with other friends who are considering whether Sattler may be the right school for their children also. 4 Middle School Science Year 8/9 Class Cell Theory The Year 8/9 students have been learning about Microscopes, cells and the cell theory. They did an amazing job at creating model cells out of household materials. Some of the models were even edible and enjoyed by all. Great work everyone. Page 4 SCC 2014

5 CROSS COUNTRY CONGRATULATIONS! Six Sattler students have been invited into the Palmerston and Rural Cluster Schools Cross Country team to compete at the NT Cross Country Championships at East Point on Thursday 4th September. Whether or not they choose to participate, it is an excellent achievement to have been invited. Those who accept the invitation will be representing our Palmerston and Rural Cluster, competing against students from the Darwin and Alice Springs clusters. We are very proud of their achievement and the time they ran at the Cluster Cross country meet. We wish those well who choose to represent both Sattler Christian College and our Palmerston and Rural Cluster. It is great to see kids using their God given gifts and abilities! Congratulations go to: Shakira Hood, Nathan Everett, Erin Vaatstra, Reece McIntyre, Gemma McIntyre and Eden Koole. Mrs. Tuisuva, Primary School Coordinator. LITERACY AND NUMERACY FUN DAY This is a reminder for ALL Sattler students to get your costume organised! On Friday 29 th August (week 6), Sattler Christian College will be having our annual Literacy and Numeracy Day celebrations. All staff and students can come dressed-up as their favourite BOOK CHARACTER and participate in a day of educational games. Classes are combined across the school and teachers work together to run interactive activities using literacy and numeracy skills. The Book Character fashion parade will happen in the library at the beginning of the day. Parents are welcome to watch and enjoy the celebration from 8:30am. Please note that costumes do not need to be costly and can be created using items and clothing that you already own. Mrs. Tuisuva Page 5 SCC 2014

6 From the Office. Primary School Cubby: Donations of metal and help needed We are hoping to construct a metal cubby for the primary school students to enjoy. We were wondering whether anyone in our school community might have any suitable materials (roofing iron, metal framing steel etc) in good condition that they could donate towards the project. Possibly there may also be some tradesmen/women with the time and skills to assist with the construction. If you think you might be able to assist us please let Paul Vaatstra know. Keep in mind that donations of materials and or time can be used towards the School Service Levy. WANTED: We are looking for some fridges, do you have a fridge that is in working order and surplus to your requirements? Are you willing to donate it to the school? We are in need of a small Bar fridge and a normal upright fridge with freezer compartment. 7 Notices... Fundraising Update. Student Council were pleased that we were able to once again support Jeans for Genes. Thank you to all those who wore their jeans and made a donation last Thursday. In total we raised $156 for the Children's Research Medical Institute who seek cures for genetic conditions affecting children such as cancer, epilepsy, blindness, liver disease and many others. It is always a great opportunity for our school community to help others.
