3 STEP1: REGISTERING YOUR COMPUTER FOR USE WITH KWANSEI GAKUIN NETWORK 1.1 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Operating System Requirements: Windows Vista (service pack 2 and later) Mac OS X (10.7 and later) ios (iphone, ipod touch, ipad,ipad mini) Network Connection Requirements: Computers without built-in wireless connectivity can connect to the school network using a Wireless LAN adaptor that supports the IEEE a.b.g standard and x authentication. A password and User ID provided by the University Organization for Information Management and Communication. 1.2 APPLY TO ACCESS THE UNIVERSITY NETWORK ON-CAMPUS 1. Download the for privately owned computers application form (Excel file). 2. Complete it. 3. Then send the file to the following address: ipaddress@kwansei.ac.jp from your KWANSEI account. Note: To connect your computer from within an on-campus office or lab, you need to download and complete another type of application form. Also you need to fill out a separate form for each place where you connect your computer. For a more detailed explanation, please click the following link: Accessing the University Network from On-campus ( In this users guide we will explain how to setup your computer using a mouse and keyboard. If you use a tablet device, press and hold to right click. Also, when you open a charm bar with touch, swipe in from the right edge, and then tap the one you want. 1

4 1.3 HOW TO FILL OUT APPLICATION 2

5 1.4 HOW TO FIND YOUR COMPUTER S MAC ADDRESS 1) Point the mouse to either the top or bottom right corner of the screen. 2) This will bring up the Charm bar on the right side of the screen. 3) Click the Search icon. (See 1.4.1) ) In the Search bar, type cmd. (See 1.4.2) 5) Click the Command Prompt under the search bar. (See 1.4.3)

6 6) A command prompt window will appear. Type the command code getmac v (Make sure there is a space before the -v ) (See 1.4.4) 7) Press Enter ) The MAC address will be in the same line as Wi-Fi (See 1.4.5) under the heading Physical Address :(See 1.4.6) 9) Once you have verified your computer s MAC address, close the window by clicking the X in the upper right-hand corner. (See 1.4.7)

7 1.5 WIRELESS LAN LOCATIONS (Wi-Fi hotspots) Please note: A wireless LAN connection at Osaka Umeda Campus is available only in specific rooms. When you connect your devices to the wireless network at the campus, you need to reserve one of the rooms in advance. Please contact us at the Osaka Umeda Campus Office to make a reservation. 8 1.6 BEFORE CONFIGURING YOUR COMPUTER When you configure your computer for use on the university network, it may change your previous configuration. If it does, you may have trouble when you return to your previous network. Please, therefore, take accurate notes of your non-school system settings BEFORE changing the settings so that you can re-create your network without any problems. We assume no responsibility whatever for any troubles resulting from the use of this manual, such as having problems connecting to your previous network. 1.7 COMPUTER SECURITY AND VIRUS PREVENTION Please be sure to take at least the following steps in doing your part to maintain University Network security. Install appropriate anti-virus software on your computer. Download the latest virus definition files and keep anti-virus software up to date. Update the software on a regular basis. Regular Windows Updates are also essential. Note: Check for expiration dates on your antivirus to insure that your virus prevention software is actually functioning. If University Network security detects that your computer has a virus, your connection with the university system will be automatically severed. 6

9 STEP2: CONFIGURING YOUR NETWORK Checking Your Present Settings and Adding DNS Suffixes 2.1 CHECKING YOUR PRESENT SETTINGS AND ADDING DNS SUFFIXES Login to your computer with an administrator account and configure the following settings. If your computer has a wireless LAN switch, make sure it s ON. 1) Point the mouse to either the top or bottom right corner of the screen. 2) This will bring up the Charm bar on the right side of the screen. 3) Click the Search icon. (See 2.1.1) ) In the Search bar, type Control Panel. (See 2.1.2) 5) Click the Control Panel icon under the search bar. (See 2.1.3)

10 6) There are various view settings you can choose from in your Control Panel: Large icons, Small icons, Category. Make sure your Control Panels set to View by: Category. (See 2.1.4) 7) If Category is not already selected, you can choose it by clicking the small triangle in the same line as the words View by: and selecting Category from the list which appears. 8) Click View network status and tasks in the Control Panel window. (See 2.1.5) ) In the left-hand column of the Network and Sharing Center window, select Change adapter settings. (See 2.1.6)

11 10) The Network Connections window will appear. Right-click on Wi-Fi (See 2.1.7) and select Properties from the list. (See 2.1.8) Note: If, during the configuration process, the screen darkens and the User Account control dialog box appears, enter your local administrator password (See 2.1.9) and click Yes. (See )

12 11) The Wi-Fi Properties dialog box will appear. Make sure the Networking tab within the dialog is selected. (See ) 12) From the list which appears, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4). (See ) 13) Then click the Properties button. (See ) The Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties dialog box will appear. Have you already selected the following? Obtain an IP address automatically Obtain DNS server address automatically (See , ) If so, go to page 13, 2.2 ADDING DNS SUFFIXES for further instruction

13 14) When NOT selected are Obtain an IP address automatically or Obtain DNS server address automatically: If you have been using a static IP address and numbers are input in the text boxes as shown by , , take an accurate note of your present settings before proceeding ) After making a record of all your present configurations, select Obtain an IP address automatically. (See ) Also select Obtain DNS server address automatically. (See ) 16) Select the Alternate Configuration tab. (See )

14 17) In Alternate Configuration tab, select the User configured and re-enter your personal settings. (See , ) (These are the settings for which you made a memo of these settings prior to beginning the configuration process.) (See , ) Having your original settings stored as an Alternate Configuration will allow you to easily switch between the set-ups you need for both on- and off-campus operation. 18) Make sure Validate settings, if changed, upon exit is unchecked. (See ) 19) Click the tab labeled General (See ) and go to page 13, 2.2 ADDING DNS SUFFIXES

15 2.2 ADDING DNS SUFFIXES 1) In the General tab, click the Advanced...button. (See 2.2.1) ) In the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box, click the tab labeled DNS. (See 2.2.2)

16 3) Select Append these DNS suffixes (in order): (See 2.2.3) 4) Click the Add...button. (See 2.2.4) ) The TCP/IP Domain Suffix dialog box will appear. In the dialog, type in the following suffix: kwansei.ac.jp. (See 2.2.5) 6) Click the Add button. (See 2.2.6) ) The Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box will appear again. Click the Add button. 8) The TCP/IP Domain Suffix dialog box will appear. In the dialog, type in the following suffix: nuc.kwansei.ac.jp. (See 2.2.7) 9) Click the Add button. (See 2.2.8)

17 Note: If you skip these steps (of adding the DNS suffixes), you might have a trouble in mapping network drives. 10) Now, you will see the following two DNS suffixes, displayed beneath the heading Append these DNS suffixes (in order): (See 2.2.9) kwansei.ac.jp nuc.kwansei.ac.jp 11) In the box labeled DNS suffix for this connection: type in kwansei.ac.jp. (See ) 12) Make sure the checkbox for Register this connection s addresses in DNS is unchecked. (See ) 13) Click the OK button to close the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box. (See ) あ あ ) The active window will now be the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties. Click the OK button to close the dialog. 15) Now the active window will be the Wi-Fi Properties dialog box. Click either OK or Close to close the dialog. 15

18 2.3 MAKING A NETWORK PROFILE 1) Point the mouse to either the top or bottom right corner of the screen. 2) This will bring up the Charm bar on the right side of the screen. 3) Click the Search icon. (See 2.3.1) ) In the Search bar, type control panel. (See 2.3.2) 5) Click the Control Panel under the search bar. (See 2.3.3)

19 6) Make sure your Control Panel is set to View by: Category. (See 2.3.4). 7) Click View network status and tasks. (See 2.3.5) ) Click Set up a new connection or network in the Network and Sharing Center window. (See 2.3.6)

20 9) A window labeled Choose a connection option window will appear. Select Manually connect to a wireless network. (See 2.3.7) 10) Click the Next button. (See 2.3.8) ) A window labeled Enter information for the wireless network you want to add will appear. In the box labeled Network name:, type in KGU-WLAN. (See 2.3.9) From the drop down list next to Security type:, WPA-2 Enterprise. (See ) Make sure the checkbox for Start this connection automatically is checked. (See ) Make sure the checkbox for Connect even if the network is not broadcasting is checked.(see ) 12) Click the Next button. (See )

21 13) If you completed all the previous steps correctly, the following message should appear: Successfully added KGU-WLAN 14) Click Change connection settings. (See ) ) The KGU-WLAN Wireless Network Properties dialog box will appear. 16) Select the Security tab. (See ) 17) Click the Settings button. (See )

22 18) The Protected EAP Properties window will appear. Make sure the checkbox for Verify the server s identity by validating the certificate is unchecked. (See ) Make sure the checkbox for Enforce Network Access Protection is checked. (See ) 19) Click the Configure...button. (See ) ) The EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties dialog box will appear. Uncheck the checkbox for Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any). (See ) 21) Click the OK button. (See ) ) Close the Protected EAP Properties dialog box by clicking the OK button. 20

23 23) In the KGU-WLAN Wireless Network Properties dialog box, click the Advanced Settings. (See ) ) In the Advanced settings dialog box, make sure the checkbox for Specify authentication mode: is checked (See ), and select User authentication.(see ) 25) Close the dialog box by clicking the OK button. (See )

24 26) Close any remaining open window by clicking either the OK or the Close button on each window. 27) Your system will be correctly configured. Restart your computer to initiate the new settings. 28) Point the mouse to either the top or bottom right corner of the screen. This will bring up the Charm bar on the right side of the screen. Click on the Settings icon. (See ) ) Click the Network icon. (See )

25 30) Select KGU-WLAN from the network list (See ) and click Connect. (See ) ) The Network Authentication dialog box will appear. In the box labeled User name, enter your KWANSEI User ID. (See ) In the box labeled Password, enter your KWANSEI password. (See ) Note: If you have more than one User IDs, make sure you use the one that was assigned to you by the Organization for Information Management and Communication. 32) Click the OK button. (See ) Please give the computer a few moments to connect to the network. Note: If the Authentication dialog shows up again after clicking on OK button, there is a possibility that you may enter an incorrect combination of user ID and password. Please enter your information again

26 2.4 PROXY SET-UP After successfully setting up the network, move on to the Proxy set-up. You will need to configure the proxy server settings to access external website from the internal network. Below is the proxy set-up procedure for Internet Explorer 11. 1) Click Desktop from the Start screen. (See 2.4.1) ) Open Internet Explorer from the Taskbar. (See 2.4.2)

27 Because the Proxies have not yet been set, you will get a message telling you, This page can t be displayed. Ignore this message. 3) Click the icon that looks like a gear in the upper right corner. (See 2.4.3) 4) Select Internet Options from the menu which appears. (See 2.4.4) ) The Internet Options dialog box will appear. Click the Connections tab. (See 2.4.5) 6) Click the LAN settings button. (See 2.4.6)

28 The Local Area Network (LAN) Settings dialog box will appear. Make sure the checkbox for Automatically detect settings is unchecked. Make sure the checkbox for Use automatic configuration script is unchecked. (See 2.4.7) Make sure the checkbox for Use a proxy server for your LAN is checked. (See 2.4.8) In the box labeled Address: type in [Proxy Address]. In the box labeled Port: type in [Port Number]. (See 2.4.9) Information of Proxy Server Address For the Nishinomiya Uegahara, Osaka Umeda, Seiwa campus: Address [proxy.kwansei.ac.jp] Port [8080] For the Kobe Sanda campus: Address [proxy.ksc.kwansei.ac.jp] Port [8080] Make sure the checkbox for Bypass proxy server for local addresses is checked. (See ) 7) Click the OK button. (See ) ) In the Internet Options dialog box, click the OK button. Now you are all set. To make sure you have configured everything properly, simply try to access any page such as Yahoo, Google, and etc. 2.5 WHEN ACCESSING THE INTERNET FROM AN OFF-CAMPUS LOCATION It is important to note that the internet configuration described in this manual only applies to on-campus operation. When you are off-campus, you must uncheck the box labeled Use a proxy server for your LAN. (See 2.4.8) You must re-check this box before you will be able to once more access the Internet from on-campus. 26

29 STEP3: HOW TO MAP NETWORK DRIVES The university provides virtual online drives which can be accessed from both on-and off-campus. For off-campus access, log on to Information System Web Service ( Then click the button of the drive you wish to open. For specific instructions on using this system from Nishinomiya Seiwa Campus, please contact the Information media Office, Nishinomiya Seiwa. 3.1 SHARED ONLINE DATA STORAGE (DRIVES X, Y, AND M) Drive M Contains educational materials and research data. Housed at the Kobe Sanda Campus. All users can download data and execute programs in Drive M. However, teachers only can upload and delete data from Drive M. Drive X Contains educational materials and research data. This drive can also be used for temporary storage of your documents. All users can download data, execute programs, upload data, and delete data in Drive X. The System Administrator reserves the right to delete documents for purposes such as freeing up space. Major disk-cleanings sessions occur throughout the year, especially at the end of both the spring and fall semesters. Drive Y Contains educational materials and research data. Housed at the Nishinomiya Uegahara Campus. All users can download data and execute programs in Drive Y. As for the Teachers folder, teachers only can upload and delete data in the folder. 3.2 YOUR PERSONAL ONLINE DATA STORAGE (DRIVE Z) The university provides another online data storage virtual drive, Drive Z, for users to store their personal documents. Drive Z is referred to as My Documents on all classroom computers operated by the university. The Drive Z (My Document) is given to each user for his/her private use. Therefore, another user will not be able to access your Drive Z (My Document) Backing up your files to Drive Z is recommended for the following reasons: Even when your personally-owned computer crushes, from another computer you can access Drive Z and retrieve your data you backed up on it. Drive Z can be accessed from off-campus through the internet using your Web Folder. 27

30 3.3 SETTING UP SHARED ONLINE DATA STORAGE (DRIVES M, X, AND Y) 1) Point the mouse to either the top or bottom right corner of the screen. 2) This will bring up the Charm bar on the right side of the screen. 3) Click the Search icon. (See 3.3.1) ) Type computer in the Search bar (See 3.3.2) and right-click on the This PC icon under the search bar. (See 3.3.3) 5) Click the Map network drive.(see 3.3.4)

31 6) Choose a drive letter from the dropdown list located next to the Drive:. (See 3.3.5) In the Folder box, type the path of the folder to map. (See 3.3.6) Mapping Drive M Select M from the dropdown list next to the Drive:. In the box labeled Folder, type in kgs file m Mapping Drive X Select X from the dropdown list next to the Drive:. In the box labeled Folder, type in kgs file x Mapping Drive Y Select Y from the dropdown list next to the Drive:. In the box labeled Folder, type in kgs file y 7) Make sure the checkbox for Reconnect at sign-in is checked. (See 3.3.7) 8) Click the Finish button. (See 3.3.8)

32 9) The Windows Security dialog box will appear. In the box labeled User name, type in kwansei [include here your User ID]. (See 3.3.9) In the box labeled Password, enter your password. (See ) Check the box next to Remember my credentials. (See ) 10) Click the OK button. (See )

33 3.4 SETTING UP YOUR PERSONAL ONLINE DATA STORAGE (DRIVE Z) 1) Point the mouse to either the top or bottom right corner of the screen. 2) This will bring up the Charm bar on the right side of the screen. 3) Click the Search icon. (See 3.4.1) ) Type computer in the Search bar (See 3.4.2) and right-click on the This PC icon under the search bar. (See 3.4.3) 5) Click the Map network drive. (See 3.4.4)

34 6) Map your Network Drive Z as follows: Select Z from the dropdown list next to the Drive: (See 3.4.5) In the box labeled Folder, type in kgs file z [include here your User ID]. (See For instance, if your User ID is abc12345 type in kgs file z abc12345.) 7) Make sure the checkbox for Reconnect at sign-in is checked. (See 3.4.7) 8) Click the Finish button. (See 3.4.8) ) The Windows Security dialog box will appear. In the box labeled User name, type in kwansei [include here your User ID]. (See 3.4.9) In the box labeled Password, enter your password. (See ) Check the box next to Remember my credentials. (See ) 10) Click the OK button. (See )

Once you have completed your set-up, your computer will stay configured for continuing use with the school network. 33

36 TROUBLESHOOTING If you have trouble getting a wireless network connection, you should check the following: Is the wireless switch turned on? If you have a wireless switch on your PC, make sure it is turned on. Is the wireless adapter enabled? 1. Point the mouse to either the top or bottom right corner of the screen. This will bring up the Charm bar on the right side of the screen. Click on the Search icon. 2. In the Search bar, type control panel. Apps Search result will appear in the left. Click the Control Panel. 3. Make sure the Control Panel set to View by: Category. 4. Click View network status and Tasks. 5. Select Change adapter settings. 6. If Wireless Network Connection is grayed out and shown as Disabled, right-click on the icon and select Enable this network device from the list. Is the signal strength strong enough? 1. Point the mouse to either the top or bottom right corner of the screen to open the Charm bar. Click on the Settings icon. 2. In the Settings screen, click the Network icon. Under the Networks, SSID (KGU-WLAN) should be displayed. 3. If the SSID is not displayed, it means that you are not in range of a Wi-Fi base station. Please move to the Wi-Fi hotspot and try again. Is the combination of user ID and password correct? If an authentication dialog shows up after entering your user ID and password, there is a possibility that you may enter incorrect information and authentication fails. Please enter your information again. 34

37 Is the wireless network properly connected to KGU-WLAN? 1. Point the mouse to the top right corner of the screen to open the Charm bar. Click on the Search icon. 2. If the Network icon is shown as Available, you are not connected to the Local university network. Click the Network icon, select KGU-WLAN and click the Connect button. Make sure Connect automatically is checked. If KGU-WLAN is not displayed, it means that you are not in range of a Wi-Fi base station. 3. An authentication dialog will show up. Please type your user ID and Password and click OK. Have you changed proxy settings in your browser? When you cannot access external websites such as Yahoo or Google from within the internal KWANSEI network, please check your proxy settings. Note: The proxy setting may vary according to your browser. If you used your computer to connect to the internet outside of the campus, Use a proxy server for you LAN may be unchecked.
