WiFi for PCs/laptops/Macs PC/laptop/Mac requirements Operating system Windows Vista, 7, 8 or 10 Mac OS X 10.8 and above Common Linux distributions such as Ubuntu may work. Virus protection You must have up-to-date anti-virus software. If your computer gets infected, your University network connection will be disabled. Already have anti-virus software? Anti-virus programs need to receive regular updates to be valid. When free trials expire you have to pay to renew or uninstall the software and get a new program. Don t install more than one anti-virus program. Windows Defender is an exception, and will work alongside other programs. Macs need anti-virus software too: apply the same protection principles as advised for Windows users. 5

6 Free anti-virus software If you don t know which anti-virus software to choose, we can recommend these free options: Windows 8 / Windows 10 comes with Windows Defender anti-virus which is enabled by default Windows 7 / Vista: search for Microsoft Security Essentials Mac OS X: search for Avast. Security settings If the default settings for Mac OS X, Windows 7, 8 or 10 are still set, your security settings are ok. If someone has changed them, or if you use Windows Vista, please check that: all user accounts require a password, and the guest account is disabled file sharing is turned off your computer is receiving automatic system updates For advice on how to check and enable your security settings, search for internet safety and data security on the Kent website. Set up WiFi in your room The quickest way to set up campus WiFi on a PC, laptop or Mac is to use our eduroam set up tools, available using the red cable in your room. Once set up, WiFi will work across campus. 1. Find your red network cable: look in cupboards/drawers; if you can t find it, ask at reception. Plug it into your computer and the wall socket. 2. From a web browser*, go to the Registration page: campman.kent.ac.uk/registration Click Agree to the Acceptable Use Policy. Go to step 3. * Mac users: use Chrome if available, which is compatible with our online registration.
