2 I. Internet Service How do I connect to the Internet? WiFi (Wireless Connectivity) is available throughout the building. In order to connect, you will need a Wireless Enabled Laptop or PC Card for your Desktop PC. What if I don t have a Wirelessly enabled PC? There are Ethernet jacks located in each room. In order to connect, make sure your PC has a T-Base 10 Ethernet card and an Ethernet (also called CAT-5) cable. Is the connection MAC compatible? Yes. As long as your Laptop or Desktop computer is Ethernet ready, you will be able to connect to the Internet. Do I need to configure my PC or MAC in order to connect? Yes. Refer to the Appendix at the back of this Guide for detailed instructions. I plugged in, but can t seem to get things working. For in-room support, please call the Student Help Desk:

3 II. Appendix Configuring your PC or MAC Computer If you have still have a problem after following any of the steps outlined on the following pages, please contact the Student Help Desk at

4 Running Windows 2000 Step 1: Click on [Start] button, then click on the Settings icon, then select the Network and Dial-up Connections from the menu. Note: If you do not see the Network and Dialup Connections option, go to the Control Panel and select Network and Dialup Connections option. Step 2: Double-click the Local Area Connection icon. Note: If you do not see a Local Area Connection icon, then your Ethernet card has not been installed correctly. Step 3: In the Local Area Connection Properties window click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) option to highlight it. Step 4: Once the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) option is highlighted, click on the [Properties] button to view the settings for this option. 10

5 Running Windows 2000 (continued) Step 5: Select the radio button next to the Obtain an IP address automatically option. Step 6: Select the radio button next to the Obtain DNS server address automatically option. Step 7: Click [OK] to finish setting up your Windows 2000 connection. To test your connection, open a browser using Internet Explorer. 11

6 Running Windows XP Step 1: Click the [Start] button, and then select the Control Panel option. Step 2: In the Control Panel window, click the Network and Internet Connections option. Note: If you have selected the option to use the Classic View of the Control Panel window skip to Step 3. Step 3: In the Network and Internet connections window, click the Network Connections option. Note: If you are using the Control Panel in "Classic View" you will see the same icon and title in your window as you see here. Step 4: In the Network Connections window, right click on the Local Area Connection icon. Note: If you do not see the Local Area Connection Icon your Ethernet card has not been installed correctly. Step 5: Select Properties from the menu. 12

7 Running Windows XP (continued) Step 6: In the Local Area Connection Properties window, select and highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) option. Step 7: Once the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) option is highlighted, click on the [Properties] button to view the settings for this option. Step 8: In the Internet Protocol Properties window, select the radio button next to the Obtain an IP address automatically option. Step 9: Select the radio button next to the Obtain DNS server address automatically option. Step 10: Click [OK] and then Restart your computer. To test your connection, open up a browser using Internet Explorer. 13

8 Running Windows 95/98 Step 1: Click on the [Start] button then click on the Settings menu option, and then select the Control Panel to open it. Step 2: When the Control Panel Window opens, doubleclick the Network Icon. Step 3: In the Network window, look for the TCP/IP network component. Note: If the TCP/IP component appears, skip to Step 8. Otherwise, continue to Step 4. Step 4: If TCP/IP does not appear on the list, click the [Add] button. 14

9 Running Windows 95/98 (continued) Step 5: From the Select Network Component window, select Protocol and click the [Add] button. Step 6: In the Select Network Protocol window, select Microsoft from the Manufacturer list. Step 7: From the Network Protocols list, select TCP/IP, then click the [OK] button. Step 8: From the Network window, select the TCP/IP option. Step 9: With the TCP/IP option highlighted, click the [Properties] button. Step 10: From the ICP/IP Properties window, select the radio button for Obtain an IP address automatically. Step 11: Click the [OK] button and then Restart your computer to finalize the settings. To test your connection, open a browser using Internet Explorer. 15

10 Running MAC OS x Step 1: Select the System Preferences button on the dock: Step 2: Select the Network button: Step 3: Under Show (OS 10.3 and 10.4) or Configure (OS 10.2), select Built-in Ethernet. 16

11 Running MAC OS x (continued) Mac OS 10.3 and 10.4 Mac OS 10.2 In the Location field, select Automatic. In the Configure IPv4 (OS 10.3 and 10.4) or Configure (OS 10.2) field inside the TCP/IP window, select Using DHCP. The IP Address field will be automatically configured. Leave the DHCP Client ID field blank. Step 4: Click Apply Now (OS 10.3 and 10.4) or Save (OS 10.2) to finish the configuration. 17
