1 Commercial Graphic Design AP FALL 2015/SP 16 Course Syllabus Instructor: Mr. Kevin Powers, room B- 2 kevin.powers@newmarketskills.com PH#: *Parents need to contact the admissions secretary for absence at: Course Description: Commercial Graphic Design at New Market Skills Center is a Career and Technical Education (CTE) course. CTE is a national program of courses that encourage career exploration, professional skill training, and preparation for professional employment and higher education. This course prepares students for multimedia careers in graphic design, photography, and Illustration. Students will be required to do exercises in drawing, illustrations as well as a photography in addition to be competent to combine different techniques and software applications successfully. The course covers a variety of artist styles and movements including: Renaissance, Surrealism, Dada, Modernism, and Post- Modernism. This will explore various techniques, and discourses, prompting further investigation and development of a personal style and technical skill set. Fair use, Copyright and plagiarism are topics of discussion and imperative to artistic integrity. (see Student Honesty Policy Reference Statement: Students are expected to exercise academic honesty and integrity. Throughout the course there is emphasis on critical thinking including both group and individual discussions, Fair Use, plagiarism, and moving beyond direct duplication, leading ultimately to an understanding of artistic integrity. Violations such as cheating and plagiarism will result in disciplinary action which may include recommendation for dismissal. ) This course builds towards the culmination of an investigative portfolio representing a high quality and mastery of work, concentration and diversity, successful students will be able to present to a professional portfolio of one s work to prospective employers and/or college level entrance submission of artwork. The course stresses quality, mastery, and or excellence to describe student work in terms of concept, composition, and execution, whereby, students will receive both peer feedback during critiques in a group context; in addition to individual instructor recommendations and directions for refining one s work, which allows for a higher degree of attention to detail and reflection, working towards more refined works. Students are exposed to The portfolio is an extended and concentrated investigation with respect to concentration (research and development of a singular idea or theme), composition (utilizing the elements and principles of design, gestalt, and color theory), and quality (technical mastery of preliminary sketches, Adobe software, DSLR camera operation and Studio Lighting), producing work that the student should be proud of, and breadth (a diverse exploration of styles and methods of artistic expression with respect to 2- D design. Throughout the course, the Commercial Graphic Design AP course promotes a sustained investigation of all three aspects of the AP Portfolio Course Development: Quality; Concentration; and Breadth. Goals: Understand the field of graphic design and illustration: its history, career possibilities, the technology, production procedures, and basic elements and principles of design. Ability to analyze an idea, develop a concept via creating a mockup drawing, and create their vision digitally using Adobe Illustrator. Understand the basics of interfacing with other compatible graphics programs. Knowledge and preparation to create quality graphic designs including: Business cards, Posters, postcards, and web pages. Knowledge and ability to use a printing service and articulate information that is needed to print a size accurate and color correct image in an appropriate format. Produce Web ready and Print ready graphics. Gain exposure, appreciation, and practice in skills necessary to a career in the Graphic Design (possible internships) Show competency with industry- standard Graphic Design software and technology. Effective Visual Communication Use experimentation, innovation and imagination to develop design ideas. Including: Brainstorming, collaboration, word association, etc Require and encourage students to continue developing artistic practices outside of school time and location; leading to further exploration and a lifelong study and passion for art making. Identify, research and evaluate problems in a systematic way.

2 Experience leadership and teamwork Produce a professional caliber portfolio of significant research and technical skill based on in class exercises and projects, discussions, critiques, and research projects. Combined with a development of an artistic style that is fostered by challenging projects and constructive critiques both from peers and instructor. There is also a cross collaboration with other programs, whereby communication skills and articulate speech are necessary. CRITIQUE COMMENTS: One of the aspects that make this type of class so rewarding is the critique. Each student is required to critique at least two other students' work for each assignment. A critique is where you comment on the things that are working well with the images and offer suggestions on how to improve the things that aren't working well with the images. What is it that you like/dislike about these images and/or how can they be improved. Do you find the mood of the image soothing or upsetting? Would shooting a little lower to include more foreground have enhancing the composition? Or should the photographer have framed the scene differently to exclude the telephone wires because you find them distracting? Should they have been cloned out? Would photographing the subject with minimum depth of field have enhanced the composition by making the background elements blurry and less distracting? These are the types of things that we want to discuss. As well as how the images make us feel. So be open to constructive criticism so that we can improve in our image making skills. Critiques are opportunities for learning to be articulate about images. Critiques present opportunities to increase observational, interpretive, and judgmental abilities. Critiques can offer artists alternate ways to think about their images. Critiques require participation: Speak thoughtfully and listen actively. Describing what you see is a vital part of the critical process. Everything counts in a photograph. Effectively communicating your insights is preferable to impressing with your intelligence. When interpreting an image, you need not be overly constrained by the artist's stated intent for the image. Images can carry multiple meanings and support multiple interpretations. Judgments of the value of an image ought to be dependent on an interpretive interpretation of that image. Judgments without reasons are irresponsive and irresponsible. Preferences are personal and indisputable; judgments need to be defended. Critiques need not be judgmental. Being critical and being kind are not mutually exclusive activities. Barrett, Terry. Criticizing Photographs: An Introduction to Understanding Images, 4th ed., Boston: McGraw Hill, 2006 Expectations: Keep notebook and sketchbook with you in class. Practice good hygiene by preventing the spread of germs and washing hands as needed. SAVE, LOG OFF, and CLEAN AREA for the next class before leaving Always show RESPECT to each other. *Required Materials: Items are due within the first week of class. Notebook (6x9 100 sheets) for this class only. Sketchbook (6x9 100 sheets or larger up to letter size) USB Flash drive 8GB or larger or a portable hard drive. Appropriate writing instruments (pencils and pens) PAID Lab Fee: Commercial Graphic Design requires a $ 40 lab fee each semester to help support the cost of portfolio items and equipment and maintenance. Admissions Secretary will collect these fees in the ASB office, then bring the receipt to me for verification. Please inform me if there is a reason that this fee cannot be paid at this time.

3 Grading: Commercial Graphic Design is a CTE course. To prepare students for career experience, all grades start as zero until credit is earned. Grades are not weighted and are determined by Projects, Study Guides, and Enrichment Each student will be graded individually as follows: All three are separate grades and equal to three classes at your sending school, and will appear on your transcripts as follows. Each is worth a.5 credit (.5x3=1.5 credits) 1. Skills - Purely points based, not weighted - Based on Class Projects, accumulation over the semester - Deadline driven, i.e. real life work environment. Deadlines matter in the professional world. 2. Slight modifications are acceptable and expected as part of the creative process. However keep in mind that the quarter will almost be half over when you submit the proposal. This will be due early in the 2 nd semester so that you can start preparations and planning for the portfolio. Make a proposal and type in clear and concise language. Divide your proposal into 3 parts: 1. Image & Idea What is the concentration /theme/idea of your work. Is it a series of images related to one another? Narrative? Abstract? Portrait? Describe first your idea, than elaborate on what the type of approach that you will take. 2. Type - indicate if it will be a web, print, or other media, still or animation. If print, what type of material, be specific. Will you use any other software, Dreamweaver, Flash, After Effects, etc 3. Schedule/Timeline - plan out the steps necessary to complete your proposed project (i.e. scouting locations, photographing, film developing, downloading images, burning CDs, selecting images, scanning negatives, tonal and color corrections in Photoshop, retouching if necessary, making test prints, editing, making final prints, matting, writing artist statement.
