2 Background The Asian Medical Students Association International Australian chapter (AMSA International Australia) and the Australian Medical Students Association (AMSA) invites ALL medical students in Australia to apply as a Chief Delegate (CD) for the AMSC in Thailand. Place: Jakarta, Indonesia Date: January 10 15, 2015 Theme: Sexually Transmitted Infections Subtheme: Halt the Disease, Help the People. Organiser: Asian Medical Students Association Indonesia Website: AMSA International is the peak representative organisation for medical students from the Asia, Pacific and Oceanic regions. It could be considered a sister organisation to the European Medical Students Association. Comprised of 13 Member Chapters, 8 Observer Chapters and 2 Associate Nations of which Australia is a founding Member Chapter it is intended to facilitate international and transcontinental exchange of medical research, initiative and camaraderie. With an extensive global network, AMSA International has an active student exchange program, regularly undertakes national and regional projects, provides humanitarian assistance at times of need, produces quarterly student publications and liaises with the World Health Organisation, the Association of Medical Doctors of Asia and many other international organisations. Comprised of academic, cultural and social programmes, the EAMSC provides a unique opportunity for 25 select Australian medical students (20 General Delegates and 5 Chief Delegates) to explore a current and pertinent international medical issue via prestigious academic competitions, lecture series as well as small group discussions. Moreover, the EAMSC is also a prime avenue to be immersed in the cultures and traditions of different countries. This six-day conference will allow you to widen your professional and social networking with other medical students in Asian, Pacific and Oceanic regions. EAMSC 15 Indonesia aims to shed some light on how best patient care can be delivered and public health campaigns coordinated in relation to sexually transmitted infections. It will achieve this by promoting collaboration and sharing of evidence-based knowledge between 27 countries from the Asian, Pacific, Oceanic and European regions. 3 The opportunities of a General Delegate i. Being part of the sponsorship team and securing sponsorship ii. Assuming a prestigious role as an author, creator and/or presenter of one or more of our academic competition entries and/or cultural division (each will be led by a Chief Delegate, overseen by the Regional Chairperson): a. Scientific Paper b. Scientific Poster c. Public Poster d. Public Video iii. Contributing to the Australian cultural performance and country booth (led by a Chief Delegate, overseen by the Regional Chairperson) iv. Participating in and actively contributing to exciting conference activities with a group of multinational delegates from across the Asia-Pacific-Oceanic region v. Various post conference projects (PCPs)* here at home that distribute what we have learnt and achieved in the conference, which might be in the form of: a. Revision and publication of scientific paper and scientific poster b. Dissemination of public posters and films to improve community health c. A collaborative post-conference report (PCR) * = Please note the element of commitment to point (viii). We believe it would be a shame if our scientific studies and our public health campaign materials were not disseminated following the EAMSC. Selection will be partly based on your enthusiasm to undertake this. Notes: You will be provided with a certificate of attendance from the organizing committee of this international event. Should further evidence be required, the Regional Chairperson of Australia for AMSA International will also be able to write for you.

4 Funding for the conference All delegates are required to seek and apply for sponsorship funds for AMSA International Australia from any sources possible. Sponsorship funds will be collected and shared among the Australian delegates for conference-related purposes. A sponsorship template has been carefully prepared by the RC to ease your application. You might want to modify the template (in consultation with the RC) to better suit your sponsorship target before dispatching. 50% of the fund remaining from sponsorship after the end of the conference will be applicable for reimbursement; and will be distributed to the delegates according to individual contribution to sponsorship acquisition. The remainder 50% will be used for AMSA International Australia s health initiatives, including the PCPs. The registration fee will be USD 470 (international registration) + AUD 50, which includes: All conference academic programs, including competitions, lectures and workshops All conference sightseeing programs, including the visits to Kota Tua and Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) All additional conference programs, including the opening and closing ceremonies, community service activities and cultural booths Transport between venues for all conference days Accommodation for all (5) conference nights at the Ibis Hotel Gading Serpong Food for all conference days Conference freebies Personalised business cards AMSA T-shirt AMSA International Australia and AMSA Global Health delegation T-shirt Other goodies Notes: Airplane fare and post-conference tour fees are not included in the registration fee and will have to be organized individually. All successful applicants will be eligible to apply for the Travel Assistance Grant (TAG) scholarship provided by AMSA International.

5 How to apply Applications are open to ALL medical students (local and international) at any stage of their degree (MD or MBBS). The following qualities are highly desirable and should guide you in submitting your application: General qualities: Demonstrated interest in the conference theme Previous/current experience in fund raising and/or a position in a local MedSoc or GHG Willingness to raise awareness of current medical issue amongst your local community Ability to work efficiently in groups Interest in foreign cultures and customs Specific qualities: Decent academic performance*, ** Previous public speaking experience*, ** Previous research experience (esp. clinical/epidemiological) with the following research skills*: o Gaining access to research databases o Performing a statistical analysis with a standard program e.g. SPSS o Creating statistical representations of results e.g. Tables, diagrams, pie-charts o Literature review skills Previous design experience and/or visual art skills**: o Poster design (will be of A0 size 90 cm x 120 cm) Adobe Photoshop skills or equivalent programs o Video making Movie Maker skills or equivalent programs Previous experience with dance and/or choreographing * = applicable for those interested in the scientific paper and poster competitions ** = applicable for those interested in the public poster and movie competitions = applicable for those interested in a leading role in the cultural performance

6 Mission values of AMSA International Australia Knowledge: undertaking and promoting scientific research of internationally-acclaimed calibre. This research should be meaningful and significant to the global, national and local communities. Publishing in journals of significant impact factor is expected. An emphasis on global and public health is paramount. Action: utilising an international network, dedicated support base, academic research and public health campaign materials to engage meaningfully in community service, global health campaigning, national public health initiatives and academic mentorship. Medical students should be provided with methods of engaging with the global and public health issues researched by the organisation through the aforementioned methods. Friendship: fostering deep ties with our international colleagues, including counterpart national medical societies, organisations including WHO and ASEAN, sister organisations including EMSA International and IFMSA, and medical professionals practising in foreign countries. Friendships nurtured with our international colleagues, most notably during conferences with each chapter s delegation being carefully and very competitively selected are truly profound and provides an avenue by which we can be international leaders. This allows us to extend our research and public health campaigns to a global level. Notes: The EAMSC represents an opportunity to undertake research, potentially present on the international stage, and get published. It also gives you the opportunity to help prepare public health materials (a public poster and public video about sexually transmitted infections) for widespread dissemination nationally.
