2 4-H Announcements 4-H Citizenship Club The start of a new 4-H year is here and we want to share information regarding our Regional 4-H Citizenship Project. Allamakee, Howard, and Winneshiek Counties have joined together to offer this opportunity for the H Year. This 2-year project commitment is open to all 4-H Intermediate and Senior-age members choosing to participate. Youth joining the Citizenship 4-H Group at the start of the H year, will be expected to complete their second year of program work on the national level in Year 1 requires enrollment in the 4-H citizenship project, participation of local level citizenship education with 4 monthly meetings, a tri-county meeting and a trip to the Iowa State Capital in Des Moines. * Year 2 requires enrollment in the 4-H citizenship project, participation in the six-part series of 4-H Citizenship Topic presentations, youth selecting, organizing and presenting information on a Washington DC site as the Iowa Expert for the trip and finally a registration fee for a trip to Washington DC with a four-night stay at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, MD. To help you understand more about this 4-H Citizenship program opportunity Allamakee County has scheduled a Find Out meeting on Tuesday, October 13 at 6:30 PM to review future meeting dates and the two-year program plan. Parents of 4-H participants are welcome and encouraged to attend with their child(ren). The first Citizenship Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, October 18 at 5:00 PM. Please contact the Allamakee County Extension Office to sign-up for this exciting, educational and engaging opportunity by calling or Morgan at mlheim@iastate.edu. Record Books Junior and Intermediate record books are due to your club leaders. Youth applying for the County Livestock Champion Awards need to turn their record book into the Extension Office by October 1. Please have your leader review the record book prior to turning the book into the Extension Office for the selection of the County Livestock Champion Award. Senior record books and award applications are due October 1 to the Extension Office. Junior Halloween Party Boys and girls in grades 4-6 are invited to the annual Halloween Party sponsored by the 4-H County Council on Friday, October 23 from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the Fairgrounds Pavilion. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes. Please bring a can food item for admission. Join us for a night of fun, games, and a spooky good time! Please RSVP you and your friend by Tuesday, October 20 by calling or Morgan at mlheim@iastate.edu. Soup Supper, Silent Auction, and RE-Wards Day Sunday, November 1 Overall Senior Achievement Awards Interviews will be held October 8 at the Extension Office for senior members applying for Overall Senior Achievement Awards. Lana will be calling to schedule an interview time. Please mark the awards you are applying for on the evaluation sheet. Record Books are due to the Extension Office by October 1. Auction Checks! REMINDER to cash your livestock auction checks ASAP! Fidelity Bank & Trust, the livestock auction clerk from fair, will be merging with Kerndt Brothers Savings Bank. Checks need to be cashed by December 1, 2015! Smiles and Thank You s Smiles to everyone who attended the Record Book Workshop! Thank You to the 4-H County Council members who helped with the 4 th grade visits. Smiles to the County Council members who participated in the Regional County Council Retreat in Postville. Smiles to all the 4-H ers who have turned in their record book for evaluation. Thank You to all the families who have re enrolled in 4-H on 4-H Online. 3 LOCAL 4-H Events County Council Regional Retreat On Sunday, August 30, 16 Allamakee County Council members attended the Regional County Council Retreat in Postville. They learned how to define leadership and describe different skills and qualities of a leader. They also worked to develop a deeper understanding of value priorities and personal growth. This group of leaders are looking forward to take what they learned at the retreat to bring back to Allamakee County to Grow 4-H Here! #4HGrowsHere Silent Auction Basket Challenge This is the time to start thinking about those baskets that each club donates to the Award/ Soup Supper and Silent Auction event on November 1. Think about your basket theme and the items that people will want to bid on. This year we will be continuing the club challenge! The club with the most creatively themed and thoughtful basket will be awarded $25.00 to be given to a non-profit organization of their choice. The funds raised from the Silent Auction pay for a portion of the 4-H program fee. Bidding starts at $15 so plan accordingly. Our goal is to raise $4,000. Basket deadline is Wednesday, October 21 to the Extension Office. 4-H Awards Program/Re-Wards Day Make plans to attend the 4-H Awards Program on Sunday, November 1 at the Fairgrounds Pavilion at 7:30 p.m. in conjunction with the Soup Supper and RE-Wards Day. Overall Senior Achievement and Livestock Champion Awards, leader recognition certificates, and honorary awards to supporters will be presented during the program. Record book completion and project awards will be awarded at club meetings. RE-Wards Day returns! Youth can CHOOSE their rewards. Every 4-H member and Clover Kid enrolled for the H year will earn Clover Bucks to be redeemed at the Clover Store. The Clover Store will be open from 4:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. at the Soup Supper. Check out page 9 of this newsletter for more information. Items can be purchased with cash, too. Clover Bucks must be redeemed by November 25, Clover Bucks will not carry over from year to year. Soup Supper/Re-Wards Day Make plans to attend the Soup Supper, Silent Auction, and RE-Wards Day on Sunday, November 1 from 4:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. at the Fairgrounds Pavilion. The Youth Development Committee will be serving chili, chicken noodle soup, baked potato soup, freshly baked bread, and desserts. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $6 per person (age 4 and under free). The Awards Program will begin at 7:30 p.m. with Silent Auction following. Silent Auction Bids will be accepted until 7:30 p.m. The Clover Store will be open from 4:00 p.m.- 7:30 p.m. for 4-H ers & Clover Kids to redeem their Clover Bucks for Re-Wards. Desserts-We are asking the families of the Elon PMC and Lansing Blackhawks whose last name begins with the letter A-O to provide one pan of cut bars; families whose last name begins with the letter P-Z to provide one cut cake for the Soup Supper. Please drop off your baked goods at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 1 at the Fairgrounds Pavilion. We are asking the leaders and members of these clubs to bus tables and help serve as well. 4 4-H Announcements Recruiting New Members National 4-H Week is coming! October 4-10 is the kick-off for recruiting new 4-H members, but, a week is not enough to tell our stories about how great 4-H really is! Let s use the whole month of October to spread the word. The 4-H County Council and staff have visited the 4 th grade students. There are six million young people empowered by 4-H every day in the United States. The National 4-H Week theme this year is 4-H Grows Here. Ideas for you and your club to help promote 4-H Opportunities: * Encourage youth, volunteers, professionals, and alumni to share photos of their 4-H pride on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using photos and stories about their 4-H experience. * Wear your 4-H shirt to school. Take a photo and post with #4hgrowshere. * Display the 4-H yard signs at every club meeting and club event (they can be purchased for $10.00 from the Extension Office). * Put up posters, exhibits, or other displays in libraries, schools, store fronts (ask permission and please let us know at the Extension office). * Decorate your own home or business with sidewalk chalk art, posters, etc. (ask permission first) * Decorate windows at a local business (ask permission first) * Be a spokesperson! Ask if you can do an announcement or presentation at school or during a school event. Talk to your friends about 4-H opportunities. * If you refer a friend to Allamakee 4-H and they join by October 31, you will receive 1 clover buck to be redeemed at the Clover store on, November 1. (Friend must indicate or tell Extension Staff who referred them to 4-H to redeem clover buck.) Share any great ideas that you may have! Contact Morgan to find out how to make your idea work. 5 Leader s Corner Required Leaders Meeting Young people do not magically become leaders at age 13! Leadership is nurtured from their first 4-H experience. You ll receive tools to help inspire youth of all ages to discover and develop independence and mastery. Join us for Encouraging the Heart of Leadership Training on Thursday, December 3 at the Extension Office at 5:30-7:30 PM. OR Tuesday, December 8 at 6:30-8:30 PM. Leaders, please RSVP to Morgan with which time slot would work better for you by Monday, November 23 at mlheim@iastate.edu or Award Nominations Three special awards will be given out at the RE- Wards Program during the Soup Supper on November 1 at 7:30 p.m. to honor adults for their dedication and support of the Allamakee County 4-H Program. The tributes include: the Alumni Award, Honorary 4-H er Award, Friend of 4-H Award, and the 4-H Hall of Fame Award. Nomination forms are available at the Extension Office or online. Take a few minutes at your next 4-H meeting to nominate someone special. Pass those names along to the Extension Office or a Youth Development Committee member. Nomination forms are due October 1. Premium Checks Please remind youth to cash their premium checks as soon as possible. All fair exhibitors will be receiving a premium check from your club leader soon. Premiums are awarded to youth exhibiting both livestock and nonlivestock exhibits. Please note, there is a limit of 5 exhibits per project area. You many notice the initials NP on your check stub. NP stands for No Premium. Record Books Record Books As a reminder, you should be collecting record books from Junior and Intermediate members. Their books should be evaluated and their awards noted on your club s Yearly Summary Form. The Summary Form along with the forms listed below are due to the Extension Office by October 1. Please note, Seniors are required to submit their completed record book to the Extension Office by October 1. Fair Evaluation 4-H Compliance Report Club Programs It s time to start planning for the next 4-H year. It is important that club officers help in this planning. Keep in mind that everyone has different interests. You will find a copy of your club s program from last year, as well as the Club Program template on your club shelf if you were unable to attend the Fall Leaders Meeting. This format is what we used last year. Please return Club Programs to the Extension Office no later than November 30. The office will run copies for your members. The Club Program is important for the office to gather information and meeting dates. 6 LOCAL 4-H Events #4HGrowsHere Beef Weigh In The 4-H/FFA Beef Weigh-In will be held on Saturday, December 19 from 10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. at the Northeast Iowa Sales Commission. Calves that need to be weighed, tagged, and identified include market steers, market heifers, and dairy beef steers. Each person may identify a maximum of 6 calves. Calves must be a minimum of 350 pounds at weighin. Dairy beef should weigh about 800 pounds. Allamakee County Cattlemen Seeking Beef Queen & Princess Candidates Purple Ribbon Sale Purple Ribbon Prospect Sale 2015 will be held on Saturday, November 7, at the Waukon Equity Livestock Sales Commission, Waukon, Iowa at 7:00 p.m. with a clinic from 4:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m.! Make sure you come for that! Royalty crowning 6:30 p.m. Huge promotion item this year! Bob and Joyce McFarlane are donating one of their designs of a brand new aluminum grooming chute for a lucky buyer this year. Can be only won by purchasing a calf! Candidates must be years of age. The applicant or the applicant s parent(s) must be a member of the Allamakee County Cattlemen. If you would like to become a member of the Allamakee County Cattlemen, pay the membership fee and fill out the membership form. The crowned Queen and Princess must participate in promotional activities. Application deadline is October 15. Beef Checkoff The Beef Checkoff Program is mandatory and requires that any time there is a change of ownership of a bovine animal, $1-per-head must be remitted to the Iowa Beef Industry Council. The beef checkoff applies to ALL bovine animals, including but not limited to, breeding stock, dairy animals and club calves (including new 4-H projects). These dollars fund Beef It s What s For Dinner promotions. 8 Coming November 1 RE-Wards Day Allamakee County 4-H ers will get to CHOOSE their RE-wards. Active 4-H and Clover Kids members will earn Clover Bucks (check) to be redeemed for 4-H Source merchandise and member pins. Your Clover Bucks can be redeemed at the Clover Store which will be open during the Annual 4-H Supper from 4:00-7:30 p.m. Limited merchandise will be displayed. Additional orders will be placed as requested. Clover Bucks must be redeemed by November 25, Clover Bucks will not carry over from year to year. The Bucks are tallied from the 4-H years activities, Start earning your Clover Bucks today! This will be paid with donations from the Merrill B. Gruber Trust Fund deposited into the 4-H Circle of Friends account. The enrollment fees will be evaluated each year.
