An informative meeting about 4-H state and local scholarships will be held in Christmas Valley on January 27th at 6:30 pm at the Christmas Valley Boosters Building and in Lakeview on January 31st at 6:30 pm at the Lake County Extension Office. This meeting will provide helpful information for all 4-H members (or previous 4-H members) that will be attending technical or trade schools, state colleges or universities, private or parochial colleges in any state at least 3/4 time in the fall of 2016 or Please R.S.V.P. to Jamie at the Extension office and let her know where you plan to attend school and your intended major/career path. She will research ahead of the meeting to identify scholarships that will be available to you personally. If you plan to attend OSU, there will be many more state 4-H scholarships available to you. Parents are more than welcome to tag along with your 4-Her. Please come with questions and be ready to take the next step! Bring your 4-H Record Book with you and make sure your Permanent Record or 4-H Resume is up to date. 4-H & FFA Farm Attention current 4-H members and future 4-H members: Are you interested in raising a livestock animal but don t have enough space in your backyard? Luckily, there is now a 4-H and FFA farm in Lakeview! This is an area where 4-H members can keep animals while raising them for fair. The cost is a $50.00 refundable deposit per animal. The pens are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis by the Lake County Extension Office. At the 4-H farm, you will find pens with a small shelter that can house swine, sheep and goats. Each pen has a water faucet nearby and there is a tack area where individuals can store feed and other supplies for the animal. After fair, members will check out of their assigned pens and, upon meeting all criteria on the check-out list, will receive their deposit back in full. This is a great opportunity for those who would like to raise a livestock animal but live in town or simply do not have enough space for a livestock animal at their home. Please direct any questions about the 4-H and FFA farm to the Lake County Extension Office (541) LAKE COUNTY EXTENSION

4 Announcements January/February National Congress I had the honor of serving as one of the chaperones for the 2015 National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Georgia. As a long-term member of the 4-H Recognition Committee, I was delighted to share in this amazing experience with 18 bright young leaders in the Oregon 4-H Development Program. Chaperoning National 4-H Congress was a remarkable experience and, due to generous donations, youth delegates were financially responsible for only a small deposit. National 4-H Congress is a premier opportunity for young people to connect with 4-H members from across the country. During our debrief activities, the Oregon delegation members reflected often on how much they valued meeting new people, learning from others with different backgrounds and establishing new friendships. It is truly amazing how the shared value of 4-H is the common thread to connect a diverse group of young people. The city of Atlanta has such a meaningful and rich history for the Unites States. Our delegation of young people had the opportunity to tour the Martin Luther King Memorial, the Carter Center and the Atlanta History Museum. These opportunities allowed the Oregon delegation to learn about Civil War, Civil Rights Movement and civic engagement in a very engaging manner. As I chaperoned these trips, I was delighted to see how they viewed the exhibits with such care and asked thought -provoking questions of our tour guides. If you are interested in applying, please visit with Danielle Thames (2013 delegate), Anna Fledderjohann (2014 delegate) or myself. For details on the application process please visit oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/ national-4h-congress. Applications are due to the Lake County Extension Office by February 19 th. 5 Lake County 4-H in History A small glimpse of what the Lake County 4-H program used to look like In the fall of 1940 the Lake County Court and Budget Committee appropriated $1250 for a 4-H club agent. The present agent began work on May 1st, quotes the yearly report for Lake County; typed with a typewriter. Prior to a 4-H club agent being hired, all 4-H programming was overseen by the county agent that s a lot to juggle! The first 4-H agent in Lake county in 1940 was Chet Otis. Projects and Enrollment According to the report, in 1941 the project areas in lake county were livestock, dairy, beef, forestry, woodwork, health, cooking, sewing, and camp cookery. There were a total of 119 youth enrolled in 4-H and they participated in 169 projects at the county fair. The Lake County 4-H program has certainly grown since then and now has about youth enrolled in 4-H. Livestock As pictured below, you can see how different the process of handling animals was. Pictured here (1) is Jean Ogle, a member of Thomas Creek Livestock, and her fat steer which placed grand champion in the 4-H club division of the Lake County Fair. Also pictured (2) are Dwight and Duane Curry, members of Thomas Creek Livestock as well, with their club calves. Fairgrounds In 1940, a new addition to the fairgrounds was made and is a building we still use today! Pictured below (3) is the Livestock shed No. 2, constructed in August by the Lake County Fair Board on the County Fairgrounds. This building housed livestock then and still stands, housing livestock during county fair each year. 1 Jean Ogle 3 Livestock Shed No. 2 2 Dwight & Duane Curry OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY 5
