1 FREMONT COUNTY EXTENSION APRIL 2015 NEWSLETTER Heidi Lowthorp Julia Shull COUNTY EXTENSION COUNTY EXTENSION County Youth Coordinator Assistant CYC Digital photography class to be added WHAT S INSIDE: Calendar of Events Pick A Project Deadline Robotics Coach Needed Swine Tagging Horse Camp Poster Contest Cherry Pie Workshops Overall Showman Class Something new will be added to the photography exhibits in the creative arts class for 4-H ers. The Iowa State Fair has added a new digital class to photography. Why the new class? The addition of this experimental class is intended to provide a different photography exhibition experience for 4-H members. It also serves to provide legitimacy to online galleries as a medium for photography exhibition. Additionally, the class may reduce barriers for some 4-H ers who may not have ready access to matting and mounting expertise or materials. For the Iowa State Fair, displaying these entries electronically instead of print will save exhibit space in the 4-H Exhibits Building. The state 4-H office will provide additional guidance on best practices to manage this class prior to the beginning of county fair season. County fairs are considering the best way to display electronic photographs and still give youth the credit they deserve. 4-H photography judges will receive information on properly evaluating and valuing photos submitted electronically, both for the county and State Fair levels. The state 4-H office will keep this class at least two years before evaluating if the class is achieving the desired goals. Be watching for more information in your fair books. Fair books will be mailed to each 4-H family in late May or early June. 610 COUNTY Clay Street, ADDRESS, PO Box 420, CITY, Sidney, STATE IA XXX-XXX-XXXX ~ ~ 8 OFFICE a.m.-4:30 HOURS p.m. LEARN MORE Learn AT more at Iowa State University Extension programs are available to all without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, or disability.

3 GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP 4-H sportsmanship poster contest offered The Fremont County Youth Committee and 2015 County Council are seeking good sportsmanship posters to display on the fairgrounds during fair. The posters should promote good sportsmanship, encourage all efforts, treat others with respect and encouragement, and to watch our words, even in the heat of competition. Youth put so much hard work into their fair exhibits and are so very proud of them. It can sometimes take just one small word to hurt someone s feelings. Exhibitors could consider using the 4 H words Financial Aid available for youth conference If you are planning to attend the 2015 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference June 30-July 2 in Ames, there are two forms of financial aid available. OUR VISION A WORLD IN WHICH YOUTH AND ADULTS LEARN, GROW, AND WORK TOGETHER AS CATALYSTS FOR POSTIVE CHANGE

4 Youth Committee adds overall showman class At the March meeting of the Youth Committee, it was agreed to offer a Round Robin Showmanship class at the 2015 fair. The four top senior showmen from swine, sheep, goat and beef will compete against each other, by showing all three of the other species. For example, the beef grand champion senior showman will show goat, swine and sheep in this new class. The other three will do the same, but with animals not in their championship class. If the senior showman of any class doesn t want to participate, the reserve showman will be asked. Superintendents will select the calmest animals from their own breeds for the other youth to show. 4 -H ers will not be allowed to show their own animal. Tentatively, the Round Robin Showmanship event will be Sunday of fair at noon or 1 p.m. Jeff Johnson and Chelsey Anderson have agreed to be judges for the event. The fair board has agreed to give Round Robin Showman awards. A 4-H er may only win the Round Robin Showman contest once. Be watching for more information about this new class in the fair book. Coach needed for 2015 First Lego League team Are you interested in helping youth 9-14 years of age learn teamwork and work on programming Lego robotics equipment? Fremont County has a need for adult volunteers to help organize and supervise 10-member teams. The time commitment would be from May to December or January after regional competitions are complete. Please contact the Extension Office if you are interested. Grant funds are available to help with initial start-up costs and to purchase updated robotics equipment. SHEEP/GOAT WEIGH-IN The sheep/goat weigh-in for the 2015 Fair will be Wednesday, April 15 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Fairgrounds in Sidney. Anyone showing these animals must bring them to the weigh-ins. Fremont County Swine Superintendents Jeremy Walter and Terry Anderson, along with Extension Staff Lynda Marshall, drove to individual farms March to tag 86 hogs. Fourteen 4-H ers and FFA members helped with the tagging at their farms. Both numbers are up from last year, by five youth and 20 hogs! The tagging was done at individual farms again this year as a safety precaution to stop the spread of the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV). Swine were not weighed as like last year, so there will not be a rate of gain contest. Please plan to see the Fremont County 4-H / FFA swine show on Friday, July H IS BASED ON RESEARCH
