Box 37, Ephrata, WA Fax: TDD: H Friday Update February 11, 2011 Please call the Extension office to sign up for the 4-H Teen Conference at WSU, June 26-28, University of Idaho Block & Bridle Fitting & Showing Clinic The University of Idaho Block & Bridle Club is offering a Fitting & Showing Clinic for Beef Cattle, Dairy Cattle, Sheep, Swine, and Goats. When: April 9th, 2011 Where: Moscow, ID; University of Idaho Animal Research Pavilion Who: 4-H Members, FFA Members, 4-H Leaders, FFA Advisors and Parents Cost: $15.00 for the whole day; Meal and T-shirt Included Members of Block & Bridle will be sharing there knowledge and experience to help improve and/or learn how to fit and show your 4-H or FFA Fair Project. In the afternoon we will be covering Project Selection and Livestock Judging. The members of the Block & Bridle club are from different areas so this will provide a wide variety of skills and techniques that will be shared to anyone that wants to learn. See the attached registration or register at The th Annual Othello Sandhill Crane Festival Will Be March 25, 26, H Demonstrations at the Sandhill Crane Festival will be held Saturday, March 26. From 9 am until 1 pm and then again from 3 pm until 4 pm. Contact Christy Rattray ( or ) with questions and to sign up for demonstrations. Quality Assurance Training with Sarah Smith will be between 1-3 pm (also on March 26).. Bonneville Dam 4-H Youth Beef and Sheep/Goat Field Days --submitted by Mark Heitstuman Two interactive youth livestock field days are scheduled for March in Southeastern Washington. Each field day will provide the latest information on raising livestock projects for youth, parents and leaders. The Youth Beef Field Day will be held on Saturday, March 12th, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. to approximately 2:30

2 p.m. at Lewiston Livestock Market in Lewiston, ID. Additional information, including registration procedures, are on-line at: The Youth Sheep and Goat Field Day will be held on Saturday, March 26th from 9:30 a.m. to approximately 2:30 p.m. at the Asotin County Fair Grounds in Asotin, WA. Topics covered during each field day will include: Health Care, Quality Assurance, Feeding and Nutrition, Selection of project animals, Fitting and Showing, and other topics. Pre-registration is recommended. Presenters include WSU and UI Extension and Animal Sciences faculty, area veterinarians, and outstanding livestock producers.. The events are cosponsored by the WSU Asotin and Whitman County Extension Offices, and the UI Nez Perce County Extension Office. Goat Health Care & Nutrition and Packgoat Seminar Plan to join us at Edelweiss Acres Farm in Olympia, WA on March 12 for this year's Goat Health Care & Nutrition and Packgoat Seminar. For more information and registration go to: or call (360) ; 23rd Annual NWODGA Goat Education Conference The Northwest Oregon Dairy Goat Association is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the dairy goat through products, industry, youth, education, support of youth events and shows. You are invited to join them at the 23rd NWODGA Conference in Oregon City, OR at the Clackamas Community College, February 26, Pre-registration by Feb. 18th is suggested but not required. Sign-up begins at 8am with classes starting at 8:30am - 4pm. Cost is $25 for adult and $12.50 for youth. For more information and registration go to: 4-H Fair Superintendent's Training --submitted by Tracie Hanson, Grays Harbor County 4-H Would you like to know more about 4-H as an effective youth prevention program, or how to be more prepared to work with the public? How about the the difference between Danish and American judging or how to be prepared for the unexpected events that happen at fair? While the training will be geared towards 4-H Fair Superintendents, other interested 4-H or fair volunteers are welcome to attend. The event will be held at the Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds on Saturday, February 26th from 9:30-3:30. Only $5 will register you for the entire day of fun, interactive workshops, and a networking session during the lunch break! (Don't forget to bring your own lunch!) For information about this great opportunity, see attached flyer, or contact Tracie Hanson at phone (360) Poultry Judging School The International Center for Poultry presents the Poultry Judging School at the Yamhill County Extension office, March 14, The vision of Poultry Judging School is to train, coach and mentor those who have a desire to judge poultry and enjoy working with people, especially young people! At the Poultry Judging School you will

3 learn the necessity of judging by the Standard of Perfection, you will be equipped with the skills to handle and work with people, a significant part of the judging experience. We will also equip you to better understand the Showmanship contest and how to work with different age groups. Our emphasis is on the local level and targeting those who may never pursue becoming a licensed poultry judge. The International Center for Poultry is committed to the American Poultry Associations & the American Bantam Association. We are not seeking to replace the apprenticeship program but to assist in preparing potential judges for both organizations. For more information view the registration form online. The 2011 Western Regional 4-H Leaders Forum registration has now passed 690! GOOD NEWS! Holland America has granted us the ability to continue booking cabins for the cruise through our 2011 WRLF website, March 21st. HOWEVER; the Special 4-H Group Rate is no longer available but we will have the ability to book a cabin for them based on the best available rates. Those booking the cruise through our website WILL still be able to use the special 4-H check-in line at the Pier. Holland America currently has some inside and balcony cabins available, but space is limited. Last day to register for the Forum is also 21st. Bad News Holland America has increased their taxes by $0.48 per person. If final payment has not been made, the additional $0.48 will be charged for each passenger. Passengers that are paid in full will not be responsible for paying the extra $0.48. Several of you have recently requested information regarding airfare, hotels & transfers. Travel information & options may be found at National 4-H Video Challenge--Deadline Extended to April 1st The deadline for submissions to the National 4-H Video Challenge Contest has been extended! Please share this information with as many people and listserves as you can. We are seeking additional entries from all over the nation. Details can be found at: Celebrate Science! Bonneville Dam Bonneville Lock and Dam will host its annual Great Electrifying Event Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Washington Shore Visitor Center. This free educational event is designed to teach the basics of electricity and how it is generated at Bonneville Lock and Dam. It is geared toward elementary and middle school students but informative and fun for the entire family. Visitors will learn how different forms of energy work through hands-on activities and films, and can take a tour inside Bonneville's Powerhouse 2, which includes walking on top of two generators and partially inside one. This event is one of many held nationwide to celebrate National Engineering Week. To get to the Washington Shore Visitor Center, travel on Washington State Route 14 to milepost 39, then turn onto Dam Access Road about one mile west of the dam or three miles west of the Bridge of the Gods. Follow the signs to the visitor center. Other visitor facilities are available on the Oregon side of the river off Interstate 84 at exit 40. Visitors can stop by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Fish Hatchery and catch a glimpse of Herman, the 10-foot long sturgeon. The Bonneville Navigation Lock Visitor Center is open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and the Bradford Island Visitor Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about Bonneville Lock and Dam, call or visit

4 Important Information & Dates for Volunteer Leaders Each club is required to send a leader or representative to at least three leader meetings a year. County Council meets the first Monday of every other month at 7:00 p.m., alternating between the Grant County Fairgrounds, Fuller Building (December, April, August) and the Othello Fairgrounds, 4-H Building (October, February, June). (Please NOTE: subject to change please watch the Friday Update for any location or time changes) Area Council meetings are determined by your area. The Grant County Livestock Committee meets the second Thursday, February through September at 7:00 p.m., Grant County Fairgrounds, Fuller Building. Report Your Volunteer Hours Every Month. If you are a volunteer leader, you will need to log your volunteer hours monthly at Your user name will be either your last name only or your First & Last name with a space in between.
