2 Welcome to NAR s Leader Training Institute! Well hi there CVP Network, So here you are. Congratulations on being elected onto your TYG board. They saw a leader in you and now it's time to show them that they elected the right person to the job. And that s where I come in. I m here to help you with whatever work your board puts you in charge of. Whether it s making a flyer, creating merchandise for an event, or helping with a fundraiser, please remember that I m here as a resource for you. Not only that, but you have the whole network to back you up. You never have to be alone in this process. Together, we are going to create a great experience for both our TYGs and NAR as a whole. 3 I. Getting to Know You (and me!) A. For those of you that don t know, my name is Beckie (no, not Rebecca...just Beckie). I am currently a Senior at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua and I am a member of BESTY of Northern Westchester. History and language are my favorite subjects in school. I love doing yoga and NFTY of course! I also have a little bit of OCD when it comes to organizing and note taking. I have two siblings: a sister who s a freshman in high school and a brother in fifth grade. B. What I hope to accomplish this year- 1. technology: there are a lot of ways that we can make NFTY more accessible through the internet and I hope to strengthen those options a) facebook (1) more updates of dates, deadlines and events b) twitter (1) reminder tweets (2) let the region know what s going on in NAR c) (1) keep TYGs connected through a calendar d) NAR website (1) really explain aspects of NAR so that potential members get the necessary information When you get home, please join the CVP Network group on facebook so that we can all keep in touch. We will use this resource as a place to bounce ideas off of each other and to chat throughout the year! II. The Job of a CVP in the eyes of NFTY D. Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to- 1. publicizing TYG events through the social media, , the internet, flyers, and phone calls 2. maintaining strong communication a) between board members b) with your youth advisor c) with the temple as a whole 3. taking minutes at board meetings 4. creating merchandise 5. fundraising

4 III. The Art of Taking Minutes A. It s easier than it s made out to be! Just think of it as notes for the meeting. Follow these steps- 1. start the page off with the date at the top (this will keep not only you but the rest of the board organized) and the time it started 2. keep the notes short and sweet by using bullets and headings 3. use colors and bolded items to pin point key information 4. throw in funny moments to lighten the mood 5. close with the time of adjournment B. REMEMBER you are taking notes for the whole board to look back on so be smart :) IV. Hit Me With Your Best Shirt A. Making the best clothing means that it s something everyone would want to wear (sorry, that might means ball gowns are out of the running) 1. Get more people involved in the process by having them... a) vote on the design or the article of clothing b) design the article of clothing B. To save money, consider making one key item for the year instead of event based merchandise C. Leave enough time between ordering and the event so that it gets to you on time! V. Flyers, Flyers Read All About Em A. What is the point of a flyer? To catch the reader s attention! Make sure you do that. The easiest way is to use colors and to have them be inviting B. Have them be as informative as you can with as little words as possible 1. answer the who, what, when, where, why, and how C. Make sure to have it approved before making copies and sending it out PROOFREAD PROOFREAD PROOFREAD D. Send them out in advance so the word has time to spread E. Put them in places where parents will see because they can become our best supporters

5 VI. More Money Less Problems A. Fundraising is the chance for a TYG to shine by becoming leaders within the community. When executed properly, a TYG can have fun while helping to raise money for a group of their choice. B. Planning a fundraiser can be a daunting task; it s important to have an outlined plan Here s an example of how to organize the months leading up to a fundraiser- MONTH ONE Week 1: pick a date for the fundraiser about three months in the future Week 2: call your temple to clear the date and the necessary space with them Week 3: create a committee to help plan the event with them and choose a theme and a cause to donate the money to Week 4: have a meeting with the committee to begin the researching and send out the first flyer (using the techniques from above) MONTH TWO Weeks 5/6: begin to share the research and to organize people to ask individuals or businesses for possible donations Weeks 7/8: Send out more flyers with greater information, put ads in temple bulletins, make phone calls, etc. and begin finding volunteers to work at the fundraiser MONTH THREE Weeks to Day: finalize the plans (make sure all the supplies are ready, that you have the right amount of people, transportation if necessary) The Big Day: watch all your hard work come together as you raise money for a good cause! C. But what kind of fundraiser do I run? Don t worry, as long as its creative and fun, it can work! Just in case, here s a list of possible fundraisers- auction items made by TYGers silent donated items IDEA BANK drives holiday related collectable items food breakfast mitzvah day bake sale a walk bingo and other games movie night ice cream social TYG-grams (send notes to each other) Las Vegas night recipe book car wash carnival sports night coat/hat check for temple functions talent show coffee house or concert forums and more!

6 VII. Say What You Need to Say...Without Embarrassing Yourself D. Phone Etiquette 1. A phone call is the fastest way for you to pitch an event, so be wise! DO a) decide what you want to say before making the call b) identify yourself and your title at the beginning of the conversation c) give them information as if they haven t heard anything about the reason for your call d) make note of if the TYGer answered and if they are planning on coming e) encourage them to bring friends: it will make them more likely to come and increase membership f) be enthusiastic and persistent, show that you care DON T g) become too business like, remember your audience (be serious enough for you to be taken seriously) h) sound desperate and call too often as it will turn them off i) call on Shabbat j) be rude even if they give you tude E. DLP (Describe, Label, Praise) 1. Through your journey, there will be many people who help you and the best way to thank them is by writing a thank you letter. The simplest way to do this is the DLP Method DESCRIBE= what did they do? state specifically what that person did for you and/or the TYG LABEL= what was their value to you? talk about the specifics of how their actions helped you and/or the TYG PRAISE= say thanks compliment them and thank them for what they did 2. Sending a thank you card is not only the right thing to do, but it will encourage that person to continue helping, donating, and being hospitable F. Online Etiquette 1. Because your audience consists of teenagers, this is your best resource because its where they spend a majority of their time. 2. Utilize your temples online sites to tap into a larger audience 3. For messages and sa) unlike a phone call, tone of voice cannot be distinguished through the internet so it is important to make sure you say things in a way where the meaning won t be misconstrued b) greet people by name and close with your own to be personable c) be concise: consider writing a list of highlights prior to the body of a message to keep the reader s attention 4. For social mediaa) make it exciting and easy to read b) though a great tool, remember that not everyone is on it (don t let it become your only form of communication)

7 VIII. Some Final Remarks A. I know this is a lot of text to process at once, so keep it in a place where you can return to it when necessary. It will also be on the NAR website soon ( print copies for your whole board they can thank you later). B. Remember to keep in touch!
