MESSAGE Chariman s message The gem and jewellery industry has been at the forefront when it comes to fulfilling the Make in India vision of our Honourable PM Shri Narendrabhai Modi, contributing 13 per cent to India s total merchandise exports during FY Over the last four decades, India has emerged as the leader in diamond manufacturing and exports that too without any production of rough diamonds indigenously. However, the current scenario is a challenging one. The massive downturn in China and Europe have severely impacted the demand and pricing of polished diamonds and finished jewellery. Moreover, the sluggish global markets and strong rough diamond prices have adversely affected the profitability of the industry. Nevertheless, there is still widespread optimism that good times are ahead. We are quite hopeful from the upcoming Christmas season as the U.S market is doing pretty well. Also, the Indian markets have demonstrated their resilience despite negative global influences. The sheer volume of consumption of the Indian economy holds a lot of promise for the industry. In fact, the biggest business opportunity is the Indian consumer market itself. The jewellery events organised by the GJEPC such as the mega IIJS, Signature IIJS, IIJW, IGJME and The Artisan, are platforms for the industry to grow and collectively raise the bar in terms of quality, design and business practices. Over the years, what role has Signature IIJS played in transforming your business? Neeraj Kayathwal: Signature IIJS has always played a crucial role when it comes to sourcing new products and designs. It is an ideal platform to network with trade members of the gem & jewellery industry and gaining insights on the latest trends. Mahesh Soni: The show has opened so many new avenues for my business, by providing us with a preview of the latest designs and market trends. That has really helped us rethink our strategy and strengthen our shop displays and inventory. Kinnjjal Chheda: It's played a crucial role especially for a new venture like us, since we are completely new with no background or ancestors from this industry. We get to connect with industry professionals who help broaden our horizon. Saket Keshri: Over the years, Signature IIJS has transformed in a premier B2B jewellery event, where one can source the finest jewellery from both national and international exhibitors. The event has assisted us in not only sourcing new designs and meeting new suppliers but also in understanding overall market trends and developments in India and overseas. Neeraj Kayathwal: Light-weight jewellery with a lot of coloured stone elements is what I am looking forward to source at the show. Mahesh Soni: Currently silver jewellery and kundan meena jewellery is on top of our list. Kinnjjal Chheda: We are looking forward to very contemporary and modern designs, which are more western & global. Basically wearable yet exclusive jewellery. Saket Keshri: We look forward to procuring more designs in light weight gold, diamond and silver jewellery that are vibrant, easy to wear and not too expensive which would cater to the modern working women. Antiques and temple jewellery have always fascinated our buyers. Chandelier earrings, multi-layered jhumkis, chandbalis and choker sets have become a must have for brides on their wedding day. Signature IIJS being a product focused show, we are confident that a wide selection of jewellery will be featured for us to choose from. Arun Punjabi: We look forward to sourcing the latest trends in jewellery design that would appeal to discerning well- travelled customers. 3. What is your business outlook for the buying season? Neeraj Kayathwal: Frankly, the jewellery industry is going through a trying time. I feel companies who can provide excellent designs at competitive price points coupled with good customer service will do well. Mahesh Soni: Generally by the end of Diwali our inventory is exhausted and that's when Signature IIJS plays a role in helping us source new designs. Kinnjjal Chheda: As the trend is changing from buying jewellery for investment purpose and keeping it in lockers to wearable stuff, great designs will play a major role in triggering purchase going forward. Saket Keshri: We are optimistic about the season ahead and expect a positive growth in demand. The gold price has remained stable (declining to 27k from all time high at 32k) in the past few months and more number of auspicious days in 2016 can accelerate the growth. I look forward to visit Signature IIJS to meet our festive needs and witness exquisite collections. Arun Punjabi: I do feel optimistic about the buying season ahead. I am hopeful that demand for jewellery will increase in coming months. 4. Over the years, has Signature IIJS helped you meet potential new suppliers? Neeraj Kayathwal: Signature IIJS is a key event in India s jewellery calendar and over the last few years, it has proven to be an excellent platform for us to meet with new potential suppliers. The fact that this is a product focused show and there is an extensive variety of new products to decide from with competitive pricing, provides all of us a great opportunity to transact business in style and comfort. Mahesh Soni: Yes definitely! Signature IIJS helps us find new suppliers to get a comparison on pricing and get important information about various designs. From Signature IIJS, we also manage to find and partner with a new set of suppliers. Kinnjjal Chheda: Yes. We were able to meet quite a few supplier with a variety of ethnic and modern designs. We also met a few young dynamic start-ups focusing on modern designs. Signature IIJS is a win-win for both exhibitors and visitors. Saket Keshri: Signature IIJS is a key event in our trade calendar. Signature IIJS is comparatively smaller in size and attracts only serious buyers. This gives us more space for interaction with exhibitors and generates valuable connections and ideas. The other format of trade show appeals to wider audience who visit to seek market information. Arun Punjabi: Yes. We have managed to meet both, existing and new suppliers under one roof. 5. How do you see the domestic demand for jewellery in the next 6 months? Neeraj Kayathwal: I think it's going to be slow. The marriage dates end in April and then for the next 6 months the marriage season will be down. To stay in the race, we need to try new products at affordable price points. As Signature IIJS show has international participation, which in turn helps exchange more ideas. Mahesh Soni: Over the next 6 months, demand for all kinds of jewellery will definitely be on an increase. Kinnjjal Chheda: The demand for jewellery is expected to be stable. Online shopping is where the maximum activity is taking place and in India people buy diamond jewellery more for occasions and gifting. There is a demand for products with low price points that have more design value. For online selling, an organized chain for delivering these valuable products is also very important. Saket Keshri: Indians have a special affinity for yellow precious metal. Despite, sharp decline in gold prices to an all-time 5 year low, the industry is facing difficult times with low demand and slower than expected growth rates. Weddings are the greatest drivers of gold consumption in India. The contribution could be stronger in the coming year as the Hindu calendar shows more number of auspicious days for weddings that could be a strong factor to increase domestic sales. However, it is difficult to anticipate the demand and it all depends on the overall market conditions that could strengthen or weaken its position. Arun Punjabi: The next 6 months look a little difficult considering there a lot of turmoil in the world markets. As far as the domestic demand goes, I think with the wedding season ahead of us, we should hopefully do well. 4 ASSOCIATION SPEAK EXHIBITOR'S COMMENTS 1. How many members of your association are visiting Signature IIJS? Are you encouraging all the members of your association to attend Signature IIJS? Why do you feel it is important for them visit the fair? Around 25 to 30 members of Solapur Sarafa association will be visiting the show. Yes, I encourage association members to visit Signature IIJS show as it showcases the latest designs and trends. The show also helps us network with the country s finest jewellers. 2. What are your views on the current state of retail business? What according to you are the opportunities at the upcoming Signature IIJS? Currently, the retail market is average but it does show promise going forward. This year, we look forward to exploring a much wider canvas across jewellery design, workmanship and future trends at Signature IIJS. 3. Signature IIJS is different from IIJS as it is purely a retail-centric sourcing event. Moreover, it is much more compact and productive since visitors are largely decision-makers. In what way is this beneficial for the visitors? Signature IIJS being such a close knit affair, it helps exhibitors and buyers engage on a much more personal level to exchange ideas and transact. This is extremely crucial especially with the buying season commencing post the show completion. SIGNATURE CLUB We are mainly into exclusive diamond & designer jewellery especially Navaratna jewellery. Signature IIJS is a place where premium and serious buyers come to do business. It provides the perfect start to present new collections for the complete season ahead. We do have a lot of international clients who make it a point to visit this show. In this show, personal attention can be given to customers in order to achieve more productive results. Our products are globally renowned simply by word of mouth. We are soon to launch a traditional Navaratna concept for modern customers starting at a price range of Rs.25,000/-. We are also in the process of launching a MOTHER'S DAY collection for markets including USA, DUBAI and INDIA. The Navaratna collection, Mother's Day collection and Nosepin.com are soon to be launched. Enquiries in Signature IIJS have shown a conversion of 70 to 80% on an average compared to IIJS, which is comparatively less. Signature IIJS has always brought us the right opportunities as there are some serious buyers in the market. The Signature IIJS show is a clear indicator of an overall good market. What steps needs to be taken to grow retail business? Educating customers about gold being an ideal form of investment will always go a long way in strengthening demand. Retailers should also spend a fair amount of their time in providing their customers unmatched after sales service to build loyalty amongst their existing and new customer base. Signature IIJS 2015 proved to be successful in generating a good response, However, the current state of the industry is quite dull. This year, every industry is going through a lull phase, including Gem & Jewellery. We are hopeful of a turnaround soon. 3. Signature IIJS being a purely retail-centric sourcing event, is different from IIJS. In what ways is this beneficial for the visitors? For visitors the show is very helpful as all the big industry players exhibit their products under one roof. The way Signature IIJS is organised it enables only the decision-makers to visit the show. Hence, it is an impeccable platform that gives exhibitors & visitors adequate time to interact in order to create good business relationships. This makes Signature show different from others. LOOSE STONE Our main objective to participate in Signature IIJS is to acquire new national and international customers as well as strengthen ties with our existing buyers.
