1 May/June 2009 Klamath County 4-H Department Jed s Journal Here we are again closing in on the end of the school year for 2008/2009. To all of you graduating seniors CONGRATULATIONS and good luck with all of your future endeavors whatever they may be. Believe it or not in time you are all going to look back at High School and think to yourself dang that was a good time, and you will come to find movies like Napoleon Dynamite have much more meaning to you. It is also time for major work with all of your projects especially your market animals. It s time to get those critters putting on the pounds and looking spiffy, and remember with your daily rate of gain it is better to aim for a rate higher than you really need to start with because the amount of gain will slow drastically while you are finishing your animals in that last month. Also keep in mind that you want to shoot for keeping a pretty tight schedule with your feed rations, I know everyone is busy with ball games and other activities but remember your critter pals, too! The secret to success is consistency. Here very shortly it will be time for the Sheep, Goats, and Swine to weigh-in for spring. Remember to have all of the appropriate paperwork with you when you get to the scales - ask your leaders to make sure that you have everything you need. I am looking forward to seeing your projects as they come across the scales this year. I was impressed last year and I look for this year to be even better. With that, I shall talk to you all again in July. If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it, you can become it. ~William Arthur Ward 4-H Staff Jed Smith jed.smith@oregonstate.edu Misty Buckley misty.buckley@oregonstate.edu Agents and Office Staff Willie Riggs Patty Case Chanda Engel Brian Charlton Susan Honea Lori Fernlund Barb Templeton Mary Pieper Kristy Weidman Claudia Tosh OSU KBREC 3328 Vandenberg Rd. 5 State & National News Summer Conference Science Fair Teen Staff Join us June 24 th -27 th, 2009 for the annual 4-H Summer Conference. This year is set to be the best yet as we celebrate the 150 th anniversary of Oregon s Statehood with our theme, Looking Back to Move Forward. We start this year s program with keynote speaker Fritz Klein (better known as President Lincoln from the history channel and other public appearances) who will entertain and educate. Then, later that week, it is off to the clover corral - a fun night celebrating our old west heritage. Yearly favorites like the pool party and dance are also back for another appearance. During the day we have a great class selection, one of the best in memory! There truly is something for everyone. Registration runs May 1- June 1, 2009 and the cost is $200. We again will be offering bus transportation to the conference including the addition of a new coast route. Get registrations in early for best class selection and be ready to have a great time. Don t forget that chaperones must register by June 1, 2009 to receive the $125 discounted price. If you have any questions contact Jed or Misty at All forms and more information can be found on the web at: h t t p : / / oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/4hsummer-conference. Plans for the H State Fair are in the works. If you have 4-H members wanting to be involved with State Fair Science Fair, that event will be totally planned and managed by the Oregon State Fair Staff. All information about this event is on their website at: competition/science. National 4-H Congress Fundraising Efforts Continue! We have only one month left to determine the number of youth we will be able to send to 2009 National 4-H Congress!!!!! To date, only $8,700 has been donated to help send an Oregon delegation to National 4-H Congress this November. The cost to send each delegate is approximately $1500. The final delegation to Congress will be determined and announced during the Recognition Banquet at the end of Summer Conference. We hope you will join us for that event. Thank you to those who have donated and/or helped spread the word about this fundraising campaign! ~ Helen Pease If teens want to be Teen Staff members this year to have a state level leadership experience, you need to submit your applications as soon as they know their summer plans, so they can assist with Horse Fair, Livestock Show or Exhibit Building. For the Exhibit Building we need the most help August for receiving, judging and display of exhibits. Many teens find these days to be the best ones for volunteering, as later the school sports and registration dates require them to stay close to home. The Clothing/Sewing chair position is open, which works out well for a group of teens who enjoy working together as a team. If one or two of them are familiar with the clothing classes, they can guide the others in how it all works. If teens or adult volunteer leaders from a couple of counties want to work together on this, it would be an excellent way to get involved but be able to work together. Teen Staff applications should be sent to Mona Easley by or mail. The form is located on the Oregon 4-H website at: sites/default/files/ StateFairTeenStaffApplication.pdf Page 5
