Protected Under 18 U.S.C. 707 FEBRUARY 2003 NUMBER 152 Oregon State University Coos County Extension Office 290 N Central Coquille OR Phone: x240 or x240 FAX: joann.mast@oregonstate.edu Website: Spaghetti Feed, Bingo and Auctions Set For April 5 At Coquille Community Building Clubs are needed to help this annual event be a big success. Club leaders will be provided tickets, window posters, and receipts for donors. If each member secures one donation for the auction and provides at least one service during the evening, this will truly be a big success. Donations of all types are accepted. If you ask for a donation, be certain that you are the one that transports it to the Extension office by March 29. Donations can be gift certificates, large or small items, project animals or special services such as yard maintenance, a cord of cut wood, load of hay, etc. Please get excited and get your club excited about raising money for 4-H on April 5 at the Coquille Community Building. Bingo starts at 3:00, dinner begins at 5:30 and the oral auction gets started at 7:00. Silent auction items will also be available throughout the evening. Jobs that need to be completed during the day include setting up tables and chairs, bussing tables, serving meals, serving beverages and assisting with the display of items for the bingo and oral auction participants. Club leaders will be receiving packets of support materials at the February meting of the 4-H leaders association. This will also be a time to sign up club members for various tasks during the evening fund raiser. If your club has a favorite job, please contact the office now and make sure your name is in the proper place. Camp Counselor Applications Due Intermediate and senior level members who plan to assist at 4-H day camp or summer camp need to have their applications completed and returned to the Extension office by February 14. This will provide you further information about trainings and promotionals for camp. Donor Letter May Help Secure Gifts A letter from the 4-H Leaders Association executives is available to assist in the solicitation of gifts and donations. The letter can be requested from the Extension office, and will meet the needs of those businesses requesting a written request and organization federal identification number. Please secure a copy or two before you hit the streets to request items for the annual auction in April. Building Site Shows Results of Fund Drive If you haven t been to Myrtle Point lately, you may be missing the exciting part of the building construction for our new office space. The basement is finished to the point where the flooring and walls are being added on top. Color schemes are being discussed and furniture and appliances are being listed for each office and the conference room. Things seem to be moving on schedule and we may be packing up before fall. Agriculture, Family and Community Development, 4-H Youth, Forestry, and Extension/Sea Grant Programs, Oregon State University, United States Department of Agriculture, and Coos County Cooperating. The Extension Service offers its programs and materials equally to all people.

Page 2 4-H Family Faces Challenges In 2003 We Can Help News comes in many ways, and can be exciting or devastating. One of our 4-H families is dealing with the devastating, as they face treatment for adult leukemia in a patient who is in junior high school. Until recently, the routine for Bridget Morris was just like in the past family activities, school, sports, 4-H and community events. Now the routine is blood tests, waiting to find a bone marrow donor that is a match, staying in a relatively sterile environment, and being in Portland for medical treatment. Studying with a tutor rather than a class of active students is only one example of how life changes with unexpected news. How can 4-H help the Morris family? The first offer came from the Twin Oaks 4-H Club. The club will hold the annual dessert tables during the Spaghetti Feed and Auction, but all funds will be used to offset the living and medical costs that are piling up. Anyone wanting to add desserts is invited to do so all types of desserts can be sold except cream pies. Items dedicated to the Morris family can also be contributed to the silent and oral auction. If you are interested in being tested as a bone marrow donor, there will be a special drive conducted in Coos County if the national search does not locate one. Contact our office for more information. Scrapie Tags For All Sheep and Goat Fair Entries The new federal guidelines have been published on scrapie eradication procedures in the United States. Scrapie is a fatal, degenerative disease affecting the central nervous system of sheep and goats. The American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) is requiring all sheep and goats shipped across state lines to be identified with a Scrapie Identification tag. This requirement is also being made for all sheep and goats being exhibited at county or state fairs or exhibitions. Tags and tag applicators are free of charge and can be ordered from the USDA office in Salem by calling (866) or (503) Additional information can also be obtained from the websites: or Poultry Project Adds Pen of Laying Hens 4-H members with poultry projects will be able to add a new class to their fair entries in The class will include three hens in production. The pen will be judged on conformation, uniformity, egg production and general condition. Hens in this class should be good layers, similar in age, same breed or variety and free of any defects. Goat Clinic Set For March 8, Roseburg A clinic for 4-H and FFA members will be held at River Arena on the Douglas County Fairgrounds at 9:00 a.m. on March 8. Topics on the agenda include showmanship, breed identification, kidding, talk with a veterinarian and details on how to construct a Goat Obstacle Course. For more information, contact Douglas County 4-H volunteer D Laura Brumfield at County Horse Bowl Contest Results Division champions were named during the County Horse Bowl Contest. They included senior member Lupe Torres, intermediate Rachelle Crockett and Junior Lea Hoover. Other participants in this county contest included Heidi Ann Hebebrand, Anne Greendale, Brittany Clewell, Ashley Noel, Danielle Crockett, Alyssa Fortune, Deanna Russell, Nicole Johnson, Jennifer Jackson, Sailee Clemens, Allison Dexter, Chelsea Clemens, Samantha Anthony, Jeremy Dement, Angel Moore, Mandy Foote, Ashley Brugnoli, Lois Hannah, Hannah Swenson, Briana Steen, Kathryne Stone, Lori Foreman, Misty Mack, Hannah Francis, Brittney Hubbard, Cheliesa Foster, Rosy Delatorre, Brittany Love, Courtney Love and Sharon Fore. Intermediate team members have started preparing for the regional horse bowl contest to be held in Coquille on Saturday, March 22. If you have not observed one of these events, mark your calendar and watch for details in the March Monitor. County Horse Judging Contest Set For February 22 at Family Four Arena Get your pencils sharpened and open your project books to study the details of Quarter Horse geldings and Appaloosa mares. These two halter classes will be part of the county contest, and will test your knowledge of what to look for in the conformation of these breeds. When you get that figured out, open the contest guide to study the details of a trail class and what is included in a driving class where the horse is hitched to a vehicle. Don t overlook the tack needed for a driving class that could come in handy. Learn the basics of selecting a top quality sample of hay or grain, and be aware of the feeds that you might find in the ration fed to horses and colts. Your last task is knowing the general features that create a sound or unsound horse and be able to identify the parts of a horse and the tack used on a horse. If you get started today, you may be through some of this before the contest begins. If you have not participated in a judging contest before, you are usually doing one of two things: looking at a class of four items and making a decision about which is best, which is second best, third and least desirable, or identifying things used in the project. Your decision is based on the type of class, so you need to know if you consider just the horse, or the horse and rider or handler.

Page 3 OSU Lamb and Hog Sale Tom Hill has announced that the annual Livestock Field Day and Sale will be held on Sunday, April 6, This program has been well attended in the past, and has provided top quality lambs and pigs for 4-H members in the auction program. Pigs will sell at noon, followed by lambs at 12:45 p.m. The sale is held at the Benton County Fairgrounds, 110 S.W. 53rd Street, Corvallis. Auction Steers To Weigh-In March 15 4-H and FFA members need to have their steers at the fairgrounds for weigh-in on Saturday, March 15. The scales will be open from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Members need to be enrolled, have their steers controlled with a halter and lead, present a steer that has been properly castrated and dehorned, and at a weight that will make a successful project. Steers should weigh at least 600 pounds and not over 900 pounds, unless they are extremely large framed. Steers need to gain 2.75 pounds per day between weigh-in and fair, and weigh a minimum of 900 pounds at fair time. Steers should have been dehorned or castrated by now. An open wound from dehorning, castrating or injury may disqualify the steer from weighing on March 15. Start your training now, since the weigh-in takes place before spring break, you will not have that added time to work with your project animal before the trip to town. County Animal Auction Program Leaders, parents and members need to be aware of information included in the auction program for 4-H and FFA youth. Please read through the following and contact the office or a member of the committee for further clarification. 1. Each member may weigh-in and exhibit two eligible animals in any or all of the auction classes. (beef, sheep, swine, rabbit, poultry) Both animals or pens of each species may be shown in the auction animal class, rather than entering one in an alternate class. This is a decision the member must make before entering the show ring. This will allow each animal to be evaluated and help members learn the differences in the animals they presented. Responsibility for showing both animals rests on the member. Plan ahead and have help showing your second entry. Expecting someone to show up for this event will probably not be adequate preparation. In some cases, the class will be divided by weight and members may be able to present both animals. (All animals shown in the auction class must still meet the daily gain, minimum weight and weigh-in requirements). 2. Each family may enter one back-up animal for two or more family members enrolled in the same auction animal project area. Members will be eligible to use the family animal if they do the following: Weigh in one animal in their name. Have an eligible family member weigh in one animal of the same species. Enter the names of members eligible to use the family back-up animal during the pre-fair weighin. Members weighing in two auction animals in one species will not be eligible to use the family back-up animal of that species. Families with members weighing in different species will not be able to substitute species in order to use a back-up animal. 3. Champion and Reserve Champion animals that are not sold in the auction will be removed from the auction project class premium list. Members will not receive special awards, name recognition or premiums for these entries. Qualified animals placing in the third and fourth placing positions will be moved into the Champion slots and receive the special awards. 4. All lambs entered in the county and state fair must have Scrapie Identification tags in their ears. It is the responsibility of the member to ensure this is done. All other animal quality standards and management practices will remain in place. Complete information about the Coos Youth Auction Committee auction program can be secured by requesting an updated Auction Project Book. These are available at the Extension office. Additional Project Dates: March 14: All 4-H members planning to weigh steers will be enrolled. April 18: All 4-H members planning to weigh lambs or hogs will be enrolled. All 4-H members planning to enter pens of rabbits or chickens will be enrolled. April 19: Market lambs and hogs weigh-in at the fairgrounds. Lambs 10 a.m. noon Hogs 1-3 p.m. Market rabbit doe program lease animals, breeding, selection of fryer traits. June 14: Small Animal Pre-Fair Program and Judging Contest July 12: Livestock Pre-Fair Program and Judging Contest.

SWOJLA Retreat To Suttle Lake March Older youth in grades 7-10 are invited to take part in the Spring Break-Out retreat held at Suttle Lake. Activities fill the week, and include a trip to Bend for pizza, bowling and arcade games, a day of leadership and skill building classes, time to ski at HooDoo, and sharing of project accomplishments with 4-H members from five counties in southwestern Oregon. Transportation, lodging, meals and classes are included in the registration fee. Individuals must sign up and provide payment for the ski package of their choice. Options include ski boarding, downhill skiing, cross country skiing or being a lodge sitter. Complete the intent form included in this edition of the Monitor to save your place at Suttle Lake. Small Animal Day Saturday, March 1 Jefferson County Fairgrounds Madras The Fur & Feathers 4-H Club of Jefferson County wish to invite 4-H families to a day of workshops that will include guest speakers: Jason Earl, Poultry Keith Casteel, Pigeon Gene Bunting, Cavy Poultry & Rabbit Dean Smith, Game Birds Dan Schneider, Waterfowl Melissa Green, Poultry Showmanship Central Oregon Racing Pigeon Association Feed Representatives All workshop instructors will teach proper handling and showing techniques as well as how to prepare for competition. Gene and Jason will give a workshop on medicating your poultry and small animals. Melissa Green will be on hand to teach showmanship to all levels of 4-H members. If you bring a project animal with you, it must be in a solid bottom carry cage, and remain in that cage throughout the day. High Desert Wool Growers Fiber Market Day Prineville Saturday, March 29 is the date for the High Desert Wool Growers annual Fiber Market Day. This event is designed to highlight the wool breeds of sheep and goats, wool products, fleeces and crafts produced from wool. For booth/pen space contact Robina Koenig (541) or tumblecreekfarm@juno.com The market is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Crook Co. fairgrounds. Record Book Updates Now is the time to start filling in the blanks on those project record forms. The sections that ask about goals for the year and what you hope to achieve, should be done. Your permanent record should also have sections completed throughout the year, such as community service, leadership in 4-H and non 4-H activities, page one is all about your club and whether or not you are a club officer, and the project section can be completed with your county and state fair results. Reminder: 1CB means one county blue. Members who have finished contests for the project year may also start recording that information in their records. County Horse Bowl, helping at the upcoming horse show, setting up a club display at Pony Village Mall all these have a spot in your records. Pictures can also be taken now for use in your records. Having a photo report of activities throughout the year is usually more interesting than having a record of events in June and July. A reminder of what needs to be complete by July 7: Permanent Record 4-H Notes or Journal Project Records for all areas with county fair entries Project Advancements Record books will be accepted June 23 July 7.

Page 5 Club Photos Needed As we move into the promotional phase of 4-H club work, it is always nice to have up to date photographs for our display board. If your club has pictures that we could scan and print, they could be returned to you and be on display. It is much easier to explain the 4-H story when there are samples of clubs in action to share. Most photos in our file have to do with clinics, contests and fund raisers, but nothing to show the bond of club members or the great things they accomplish each year. If you have items that could be used, please deliver them to the Extension office by March 1 for inclusion in the display for Pony Village Mall on March 8. Send those club photos and be part of the display. Gardening Seminar Set For February 15 The Coos County Master Gardeners and Extension agent, Amy Herron, will be hosting a day of gardening information on February 15 in the Performing Arts Auditorium on the SWOCC campus. A keynote speaker, variety of displays by local associations, and workshops will complete the day long program. Registration forms can be secured from the Extension office. OSU Summer Conference Coming Soon Members in grades 7-12 need to be thinking ahead and making plans to attend OSU Summer Conference on the OSU campus the last week in June. Be sure to check your calendar and consider attending this statewide 4-H event planned for June Registration Due May 1. Leaders Plan Fund Raising Events February 23 Open Horse Show Family Four Arena April 5 Spaghetti Feed, Bingo & Auction Tax Time and 4-H Expenses Leaders can include some 4-H volunteer expenses when preparing their annual taxes. Keep the following in mind: You can deduct unreimbursed expenses that you incur incidental to your volunteer work, including travel to 4-H activities, phone calls, stamps, and similar out-of-pocket costs which are charitable donations. If you use your car for transportation you can deduct 14 cents per mile for the costs of operating your car while doing volunteer work. You can also deduct gifts of money or property given as charitable donations. Remember though that you must have contemporaneous written acknowledgment if the gift was valued at more than $250. It s up to you to substantiate your deductions if the IRS questions them. Be prepared to prove your costs with canceled checks, receipts, diary entries, etc. The tax aspects and reporting requirements for gifts to 4-H depend on your circumstances. It is wise to consult your personal tax advisor. Jackson County 4-H Rabbit Rally Friday, March 28th is the date for an evening of rabbit information in Central Point. Beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Scenic Middle School, this program will include a variety of classes for rabbit project members. Show information can be obtained by contacting Jacob Geroux at (541) Oregon Pork Producers Youth Show Pork producers will be providing a youth show on Saturday, March 29 at the Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall. For details on the show, contact Lana Lee, (541) Shooting Sports Leader Training At least one leader from each shooting sports 4-H club must attend a 4-H Shooting Sport Master Leader Training. The spring training is scheduled for April 12-13, 2003 in Medford. Registration forms are available at the Extension office. Loans For Projects 4-H and FFA members planning to participate in an animal project that has the potential to raise funds may be eligible to borrow start up funds from the Farm Service Agency Youth Loan program. For details related to this program, contact Bret Harris at the FSA office Coquille. Bret can be reached at This can be a way to get started in that large animal auction project. Wanted: Coos County 4-H Member To Serve As SWOJLA Representative. Our county is missing out. We have no input in the planning of the regional leadership trainings because we have no youth representative. If you are in grades 9-11 and have time to attend two meetings and one or two leadership trainings, please contact me about this opportunity. The first assignment is a planning meeting on Monday, February 17. Transportation will be provided. Happy Valentines Day

Page 6 Agent Notes Lambing is finally moving forward at a faster pace, with some nice lambs racing around the barn and across the backs of ewes resting in their path. Sheep club members were out for a ewe and lamb health program last weekend and took in some tips on vaccinating, weighing lambs, banding tails, inserting ear tags and removing banded tails. Everything went well, and shortly after they left a set of twins was delivered in the barn. While we were doing the program, all ewes were very interested in the back part of the field, as far from the barn as possible. Highlights of the program included weighing 42 pounds of triplets in one pen, releasing one ewe and lamb from a pen and cleaning the pen and catching lambs for tags or tail work. This month, I will be attending the Western Regional Leaders Forum in Portland. This will be an opportunity to exchange ideas, learn about 4-H projects being introduced in other states, and types of county or regional activities that leaders and agents are presenting. Amy Herron and I are working at the presenter s information table. Our job includes making certain all presenters and participants can locate their meeting rooms and the equipment needed for their classes. This will give us an opportunity to become familiar with the schedule of activities and discover what is happening in the western states. I am just about finished with the physical therapy sessions for my knee. It is working well and the therapist has been working very hard trying to increase the range of motion. The leg is strong and ready to work, I just need to remember how to use it normally and not try to protect it too much. I m doing nearly all of the activities I was doing before, except driving vehicles that require clutch activity. That action should be ready when the swelling is completely gone and pressure doesn t come with a little tingle. With the change in the fair date, it is really important that enrollments come in a bit earlier this year. It is also important for club members to realize the earlier dates for auction program events and pre-fair clinics. Keep informed by watching the monthly calendars and checking articles that apply to your project areas. I had the pleasure of having lunch with Todd Olney and Aaron Escobar from the Oregon 4-H Foundation this week. They were in Coos County to meet with 4-H fund supporters and to provide an update on the work of 4-H and the Foundation in Oregon. They also had the opportunity to discuss various options that investors have if they plan to include OSU, Extension or 4-H in their funding priorities.
