1 4-H Canada 2015/16 Program Catalogue 4-H Canada National Leadership Summit February 18-21, 2016, Ottawa, ON The 4-H Canada Leadership Summit is the premier professional development training opportunity for our volunteer leaders. Meet directors, staff and fellow leaders from across the country to share best practices, new ideas, and experience the Nation s Capital. The 2016 Leadership Summit will dive into the Environment & Healthy Living leadership development pillar and detailed program information will be available in Fall Process: Provinces select. Names are due to 4-H Canada by November 16, Each province is allocated ten delegates, with 3-4 spots being assigned to specific positions (NRN, YAC) in your province. The cost of the program is $350/delegate. 4-H Canada Citizenship Congress April 29-May 3, 2015, Ottawa, ON April 27-May 1, 2016, Ottawa, ON The 43 rd annual 4-H Canada Citizenship Congress promises to be as engaging and inspiring as ever. This flagship conference gives 4-H youth knowledge and insight about Canada, its history and its governance systems. Delegates explore and develop skills related to civic engagement, governance, parliamentary procedures, citizenship and politics. The theme for the 2015 conference is Canada: Where Do We Stand and will challenge delegates to think about what it means to be Canadian, and what Canada s role should be globally. Workshops will culminate into the annual debate with this year s topic: Be it resolved that, until all poverty and social issues are resolved within its borders, Canada should cease to provide humanitarian and economic aide to foreign countries. Process: Provinces select. Names are due to 4-H Canada by January 16, 2015 (February 5, 2016). Each province is allocated seven spots. The cost of the program is $300/member. Age as of the event date.
2 4-H Canada National Members Forum November 25-29, 2015, Regina, SK November 2-6, 2016, Toronto, ON National Members Forum is going to Agribition this fall! The Canadian Western Agribition is the largest agricultural and livestock show in Canada and National Members Forum is 4-H Canada s longest running conference. It s safe to say it s going to be a fun time! The theme for 2015 will fall under the Science and Technology leadership development pillar. That means delegates will be connecting with 4-H peers from across the country while exploring science, technology and innovation. The theme for the H Canada National Members Forum will fall under the Environment & Healthy Living leadership development pillar. Process: Provinces select. Names are due to 4-H Canada by August 14, 2015 (similar date in 2016). Each province is allocated ten spots. The cost of the program is $300/member. Age as of the event date. USA National 4-H Members Conference April 10-16, 2015, Washington, D.C. April 8-14, 2016, Washington, D.C. Hosted by 4-H US, this annual conference is a national civic engagement opportunity for 4-H members across the USA and beyond. During the conference, all delegates present formal briefings to federal officials about topics of interest. In addition to the conference activities, 4-H Canada delegates have a chance to tour Washington and visit some of the famous cultural and political sites, including the Lincoln Memorial and Capitol Hill. Process: Provinces select. Names are due to 4-H Canada by January 16, 2015 (January 15, 2016). Each province is allocated one spot. The cost of the program is $400/member. Age as of the event date.
3 Youth Exchanges Canada Summer 2016, Canada-wide Through 4-H Canada s provincial youth exchanges, groups of 10 youth and 1-2 chaperones participate in reciprocal exchanges with 4-H groups from another part of the country. It s an opportunity to explore one of the biggest, greatest, and most diverse nations in the world. These club-to-club exchanges also challenge members to become local ambassadors when they host their exchange partner in their community. Groups usually travel to Western Canada in July and then to Eastern Canada in August. Please be advised that funding for this program is up for renewal in Program details will be confirmed by Spring H Canada will communicate information as it is available. Process: Groups apply directly to 4-H Canada at The cost is $125/member. Age range is as of program start. Going Global Exchanges Formerly named The Garfield Weston International Exchange Summer 2015 and 2016 The goals of this international exchange program are to engage 4-H youth in an intercultural experience and increase awareness of sustainable agriculture and food security issues globally. This reciprocal exchange means Canadian youth travel abroad and then host an international youth member in Canada. Ten youth members have already been selected for the Summer 2015 exchange and will be travelling to Finland, Jamaica, Taiwan, Japan and the United Kingdom in July. 4-H Canada is exploring partnerships with new 4-H host countries all the time so please check our website for more details later this year! Process: Members apply directly to 4-H Canada at Traveling abroad is typically late June/July and hosting takes place in August. Duration of exchanges is usually 2-4 weeks. Deadline to apply is November Cost of program is $400. Age range is as of program start. Going Global Service Learning Summer 2016, Ghana 4-H Canada has partnered with 4-H Ghana on a new community service learning and leadership program. A team of 10 4-H members from across Canada will travel to Ghana and work on a variety of school and community projects with 4-H Ghana staff and youth. Projects will focus on leadership as well as sharing knowledge and skills related to sustainable agriculture and food security. Canadian members will have the opportunity to experience a very different culture and reality of life as well as experience 4-H abroad. They will be challenged to consider their work and its impact, and develop an ever better understanding of community and global responsibilities. Process: Members apply directly to 4-H Canada at Ten spots available. Deadline to apply will be in November Cost of program is $400/member. Detailed information will be available in Fall Age range is as of program start.
4 Investing in Me Summer 2015, two locations The Investing in Me career exploration program lets 4-H members engage in hands on learning, develop skills, network with business and community leaders, and discover career options. Placements are available to members between May and August. This summer, placements have been confirmed, but stay tuned for information on what s in store for Honorariums of $250/week will be provided to members, upon the successful completion of their placement. The 2015 placement opportunities are: Food Share Toronto School Grown Summer Student Assist with the operation of a market garden, growing vegetables for sale at farmers markets and restaurants. Accommodation and meals are provided through the host families. Help International (Weyburn SK) Green Technology Intern Immerse in leading edge innovation in tree nurseries, field forestry, zero waste construction, recycling and zero waste living. Accommodation and meals are provided on-site. Information about 2016 internship opportunities will be available in Fall Process: Members apply directly to 4-H Canada at No registration fees. Age range is as of program start. Host Families Needed in Toronto! 5 Larry Milton Campbell Memorial Fall 2015 The late Larry Milton Campbell was an avid 4-H er. He grew up on a farm, attended Ontario Agriculture College and then enjoyed a remarkable 38-year career with The Canadian Meat Council. Through their support of this scholarship, the Canadian Meat Council is honouring the memory of Campbell by helping 4-H Canada support Canadian youth in pursuing and meeting their educational goals. Two scholarships, valued at $2,500 each, are available to 4-H members who have roots in farming, are in their last year of high school or CEGEP, and are planning to attend a Canadian university in Food Science, Meat Science or Animal Science. Process: Members can apply directly to 4-H Canada at Deadline is December H Canada will confirm additional scholarships when they become available.
6 Find Your 4-H Wings Spring to Summer H members have an opportunity to get active outdoors and learn more about the fascinating world of birds and bats. Clubs that registered in January 2015 will receive a fully stocked resource kit that includes Bushnell binoculars, activity guide, bird passport and a Birds of Canada identification book. Leaders can tailor the resources based on the interests of their club as well as commit a flexible amount of time to complete the activities. More information about this national, three-year campaign can be found at This national campaign is in partnership with TransCanada Corporation. Process: Clubs in good standing can register directly with 4-H Canada at Proud to Bee a 4-H er Based on the tremendous success of the Proud to Bee a 4-H er campaign in 2014, Syngenta is eager to continue their support of 4-H in Canada in Negotiations and planning are ongoing so please stay tuned for more information to come shortly about our 2015 partnership. Show Your 4-H Colours First Wednesday in November This awareness campaign encourages all members, families, and 4-H supporters to wear green on the first Wednesday in November. 4-H Canada encourages members to submit green photos so they can be promoted on 4-H Canada social media pages.
7 4-H Canada Science Contest and 4-H Science Fair Fall H members just finished submitting their inventions for the Science Contest what a great start to STEM programming in 4-H. Contest winners will be announced in Spring 2015 so stay tuned for more information on STEM activities. There s more big news! 4-H is becoming a stream of the 2016 Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF). That means 4-H ers can now enter the CWSF through their own stream. Here is a timeline: August H Science Fair opens November 2015 Virtual submission deadline Judging March 2016 May 2016 Top projects are invited to compete at the 4-H Canada Science Fair (location TBD) Top 4-H Canada Science Fair projects compete at the 2016 Canada Wide Science Fair in Regina. This national contest is in partnership with Bayer CropScience.
8 4-H Volunteer Leader of the Year award Fall 2015 This award was created to recognize the significant and pivotal role volunteer leaders play in the 4-H program. A call for nominations takes place every October and members are encouraged to submit applications and reference letters about their favourite leader. Winners are selected from the pool of applicants in their province. Provincial winners then move forward to a national judging panel and a national volunteer leader is selected. The 11 provincial winners receive $100 each. The national winner receives $1,000 and is invited to the 4-H Canada National Leadership Summit in Ottawa. This award is in partnership with The Co-operators. Process: Submit nominations directly to 4-H Canada at Applications open in October, close in December and the national winner is notified in early January. New Leadership Excellence Awards of Distinction (LEAD) Spring 2015 launch This new award aims to recognize the leadership achievements of four senior 4-H members, as well as raise awareness of the 4-H Canada Leadership Development Pillars. The four winners (one in each Leadership Development Pillar) will each receive a $20,000 scholarship (over four years) and will also be invited to participate as youth panel presenters at the 4-H Canada AGM in June in Fredericton, NB. Process: Submit nominations directly to 4-H Canada at Applications open April Nominees must be in their final year of high school or CEGEP, and plan to attend an accredited Canadian post-secondary institution in the Fall 2015.
9 4-H Canada Annual General Meeting June 11-12, 2015, Fredericton, NB June 2016, Calgary, AB National Resource Network (NRN) The NRN is a database filled with a variety of tools and resources, including program guides and curricula. Materials have been categorized under 4-H Canada s four Leadership Development Pillars, as well as some other operational resource sections. The NRN is managed by a committee of provincial and 4-H Canada staff and the resources are available on a password-protected area on the 4-H Canada website. Leaders can contact their provincial office to obtain access to the database Calendar February 14 NRN in-person meeting at the 4-H Canada Leadership Summit Week of March 9 Pillar working group conference call April 9 NRN conference call Late July/early August Pillar working group conference call Late October NRN conference call February 2016 NRN in-person meeting at the 4-H Canada Leadership Summit 4-H Marketing and Communications Network The purpose of the new 4-H Marketing and Communications Network is to ensure 4-H has a strong identity and a relevant voice with today s youth. This committee will share products, successes/challenges and best practices with communications colleagues across the country Calendar February 13, 2015 First meeting of the network Meetings will take place every three months. Funds Development Network The Funds Development Network is a group who work with national office staff and engage the Canadian 4-H Foundation on the progress of building the 4-H funds development movement in Canada. The 12-member committee consists of one member from each 4-H association in all 10 provinces as well as the 4-H Canada Funds Development Manager and Funds Development Coordinator. This network meets via teleconference on a bi-monthly basis as well as an in-person meeting at the 4-H Canada Leadership Summit in February.
