1 Social Media Measurement Meeting Robert Wood Johnson Foundation April 25, 2013 SOCIAL MEDIA MONITORING TOOLS This resource provides a sampling of tools available to produce social media metrics. The list was developed for use at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Social Media Measurement meeting held in April 2013, a meeting that explored how to develop measures for tracking offline results as well as online. It is helpful to consider these tools in the array of methods available for assessing impact. This is not intended to be exhaustive. There are likely to be new tools introduced to market, and tools that exhaust their potential. Also, by sharing this list, RWJF is not endorsing any single tool, nor have we used all these tools. If you have any suggestions or additions for this list, please contact Erin Kelly at emkelly@rwjf.org Tool: Addictomatic URL: Description: Search aggregator that allows users to create a customized web page based on search term; content includes latest news, blog posts, videos, and images. Customized web page shows results for Google, Bing, Flickr, YouTube, Twitter, and other search sites. Customized search web pages can be bookmarked for easy future access. Tool: Bit.ly URL: Description: URL shortening service that measures the click rate of the shortened link. Measure/Monitor: measure If another user has shortened the same link, Bit.ly provides the overall click rates on the shortened link and the total of all Bit.ly links to that same URL, enabling you to understand the impact that others outside of your immediate network are having on spreading word of mouth. Bit.ly is easy to use and a useful way to track click through rates on Twitter and blogs. #SM_RE 1

2 Tool: Crowdbooster URL: Description: Social media dashboard that offers recommendations for the best content to share and suggests when to publish posts for maximum exposure. For use with Twitter and Facebook. Allows you to manage multiple social media accounts at once. Provides metrics on reach of individual tweets and posts over customized period of time. Provides metrics on follower and fan growth. Tool: Facebook Insights URL: Description: Provides Facebook Page admins and app developers with metrics on the performance of their Page or app. Measure/Monitor: measure Metrics include page views, tab views, and number of views of your page coming from external domains. Tool: Google Alerts URL: Description: Notification service that sends updates on the latest relevant Google results based on topics or keywords. Alerts can be set up to be sent either daily or as it happens. Daily updates can be helpful when you are doing a roundup of relevant news or when you are using a popular search term to limit the number of messages in your inbox. As it happens updates can be used for when you are monitoring a live event or breaking news. Can be used to aid in measuring impact of effort to drive word of mouth about topic or campaign name. Tool: Google Insights for Search URL: Description: Helpful for identifying search terms and tags to use for monitoring and development of Google Ad buys; provides insight into words used to describe ideas and issues in a nonjargony manner. (to identify terms to use in monitoring) #SM_RE 2

3 Results can be narrowed by category, type of search (e.g., web, image), location. and time period. Tool: Google Reader URL: Description: Web based aggregator that can capture syndication feeds like RSS and Atom; these feeds allow users to get updated posts from their favorite websites and blogs. Google Reader allows users to avoid visiting each of their favorite sites independently; it automatically updates with new posts. Tool: Hashtags URL: Description: Search engine that allows you to search solely by Twitter hashtag. Does not provide descriptions of hashtags. Only crawls recent content, does not enable analysis of use of hashtag over long periods of time. Tool: Hootsuite URL: Description: Social media dashboard that allows users to manage multiple social media profiles. Can manage Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Ping.fm, WordPress, MySpace, Foursquare and maxi accounts. Team collaboration available (multiple accounts can access the same social media profile and help to assign tasks). Users can also search for keywords, hashtags and profiles by either user names or actual names (individual or organization). Allows you to schedule posts and tweets. Paid accounts enable integration of Google Analytics and Facebook Insights. Paid accounts can archive tweets and posts. Tool: Icerocket URL: #SM_RE 3

4 Description: Social media search engine that aggregates user generated content from across the web. Provides snapshot of discussion in social media of topic or organization. Users can search for keywords and filter by blogs, Twitter, Facebook, or images. Tool: Klout URL: Description: Measures a Facebook or Twitter user s influence within their social network; a Klout score is based on how many users you influence, the extent to which you influence them, and the overall influence of your network. (create lists of users to monitor) Tool: MentionMap URL: Description: Interactive visual tool that you to see the users who are engaging with your account most frequently and with whom they are also engaging. Limited as tool for network analysis because it looks at tweets over recent past versus over life of account. Can be useful when looking for new Twitter accounts to follow or engage. Must authorize to access Twitter account. Tool: Radian6 URL: Description: Social media monitoring and analytics platform for monitoring, measurement, analytics, and reporting. Fee/Free: fee Summary dashboard provides a snapshot of influencers, demographics, and tone. Allows you to look at information over time (daily, weekly, monthly, 3 months, 6 months). User can search for keywords and filter by source types, such blogs, micromedia, Facebook, etc. Sources can be tagged. Reports can be exported. Alerts can be scheduled. #SM_RE 4

5 Tool: Social Mention URL: Description: Social media search engine that aggregates user generated content from across the web into a single stream of information. Provides snapshot of discussion in social media of topic or organization. Users can search for keywords and filter by types, such as blogs, networks, events, and images. Allows you to set up social media alerts to receive updates via . Tool: Topsy URL: Description: Real time social media search engine that aggregates user generated content from across the web. Filter content by links, tweets, photos, and experts. Advanced search enables you to filter further by users, language, and time. Trackback-page allows users to put in a link and see the original tweeter, other popular URLs on the same domain, and any authors associated associated with the domain name. Tool: Tweetgrid URL: Description: Twitter search engine Tweetgrid is a great option for following Twitter chats in real-time. Tool: TweetReach URL: Description: Enables users to assess how many and who is seeing and responding to content being shared. Measures accounts reached and impressions. Tool: Tweetstats URL: #SM_RE 5

6 Description: Graphs Twitter statistics including tweets per hour, per month, of any Twitter account. (create lists of users to monitor) Shows where the tweets originated and when the account was most active. Tool: Twitalyzer URL: Description: web analytics tool for Twitter that looks at individual Twitter accounts to assess their influence, but there are three levels of paid subscriptions available for individuals, businesses or agencies that offer additional features. (create lists of users to monitor) Allows paid users to establish quantifiable goals to demonstrate progress. Pulls in data from other social measurement services, such as Klout. Provides number of followers, and retweets for Twitter accounts. Can be integrated with Google Analytics. Tool: Twitter Counter URL: Description: Allows you to look at your Twitter statistics, as well as the Twitter statistics of other users (followers, following, tweets shared) over time. (create lists of users to monitor) Data is provided via graphs. Allows you to look at information over time (daily, weekly, monthly, 3 months, 6 months). Tool: Twitter Search URL: Description: official search engine for Twitter. Users can search for usernames, keywords and hashtags. Advanced search allows users to filter their search based on date of the tweet or location of the account that shared the tweet (if the user provides that information in their profile.) Twitter search is a good starting point for all Twitter related searches, including the development of lists of influencers or to identify participants in specific dialogues (defined by hashtags.) #SM_RE 6

7 Tool: Twtrland URL: Description: social analytics tool for Twitter accounts (create lists of users to monitor) Useful to get a quick overview of your own Twitter account. Assesses tweets based on mentions, replies and retweets enabling you to understand how often the account engages with its followers and vice versa. Source: Erin Kelly, Social Media Manager, RWJF.
