1 Jewish Cultural Month Calendar of Events 2014 Theme: An American Journey Complete Description of Events Monday, March 17 Friday, March 21, 2014 Ut Prosim Photography Contest Time & Location: Squires Student Center, 2 nd floor Description: Social justice is a Jewish value and any student that has ever experienced an alternative break will be able to submit photos from their trip that most resonates Ut Prosim. Throughout their trip they take many inspirational photographs which they choose their 2 best and submit to Hillel at Virginia Tech. The chosen photos will share, inspire, and educate the Hokie community. Passer-byers are able to vote on their favorite picture. The top 3 are presented awards. Go through your closets and come bring some treasures that you'd like to trade with other fashionistas along with clothes that no longer fit or are no longer your cup of tea. As a Rosh Chodesh, Jewish Women's Event, we are promoting recycling and Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), two important Jewish values, before Shabbat. Any other extra clothing we will generously donate to a local Women's shelter or clothing bank. Time & Location: 6:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. / Black Cultural Center, Squires Description: Ask Big Questions is an organization that brings diverse college students together for conversations that help people better understand themselves and others. For Jewish Cultural Month, the conversation will focus on the question, "Who am I? What informs my identity?" The event is open to all faculty, staff, student, and community members. Refreshments will be provided. 4 Friday, April 4, 2014 THE Big Event Shabbat Time & Location: 6:30 p.m. 8 p.m. / Malcolm Rosenberg Hillel Center (710 Toms Creek Rd) Description: Hillel ladies are invited for a Rosh Chodesh event involving a chocolate seder. We will discuss the events that involve a seder, including the traditional foods and prayers. We'll also have a separate discussion about how we each celebrate our own Passover at home. Contact: Elena Mircoff, elena94@vt.edu Saturday, April 5, 2014 Artists4Israel Time & Location: all day / College Avenue Description: A select group of internationally recognized graffiti Artists 4 Israel will travel to our campus to paint, with students, a giant mural. Artists for Israel empowers students to express their ideas about Israel, its artistic and cultural freedoms. Students will work across artistic mediums to produce beautiful, radical and effective pieces of art., Friends of Israel, Peer Network Engagement Interns Contact: Melissa Eichelbaum, melise4@vt.edu Monday, April 7, 2014 A Peace of Israel Time & Location: 7:30 p.m. / Malcolm Rosenberg Hillel Center (710 Toms Creek Rd) Description: A Peace of Judaism concert includes the musical talents of Alexander Fiterstein, David Yang, Benjamin Wyatt, Teresa Ehrlich, David Castonguay, Adam Margulies, David Ehrlich and the Radford University Chorus. The music played at this concert will be a collection from contemporary Jewish music to music from the Holocaust. There will also be poetry readings and a powerpoint presentation about the Holocaust and Jewish history. This will be a powerful artistic composition. 5 Tuesday, April 8, 2014 Daniel Pearl movie night & Dessert reception Time & Location: 7 p.m. 9 p.m. / WAJ Movie Theatre Description: Hillel will show "A Mighty Heart as part of Daniel Pearl week. Pearl was a Jewish Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped, tortured, and eventually murdered in Pakistan shortly after 9/11 solely because he was Jewish. Dessert and discussion will follow after the movie. Contact: Cost: $3 with VT ID; $5 without VT ID Wednesday, April 9, 2014 Daniel Pearl Music Day Presentation: Reel Big Fish Time & Location: 7 p.m. / Commonwealth Ballroom Squires Student Center Description: For annual Daniel Pearl Music Day, we are very excited to host a concert by Reel Big Fish. Virginia Tech, Hillel at Virginia Tech, and VTU have worked in collaboration since 2007 to put on an event celebrating music. Daniel Pearl Music Day uses the power of music to reaffirm our commitment to tolerance and humanity to Virginia Tech's multicultural community., Jewish Student Union (JSU) & Virginia Tech Union (VTU) Contact: Kate Gorbach, kate18@vt.edu Cost: $8 in advance; $10 at the door Thursday, April 10, 2014 Screening of Melting Away Time & Location: 6 p.m. 8 p.m. / Newman Library first floor Description: This heartfelt drama follows the story of a family drawn into crisis after the parents discover their child is secretly exploring gender and kick him out of the house. Later, when the father is dying of cancer, the mother hires a private detective to track him down. Instead of a "son", the detective finds a woman who earns her pay dancing at gay cabarets. For the first time in the history of Israeli cinema, a feature film dealing with parents coping with their transgender child. "Melting Away" has been conceived after the brutal murder at the Tel Aviv LGBT Youth Center and the deep shock felt by Doron Eran, director, and his partner, screenwriter Bili Ben Moshe after hearing of parents refusing to visit their injured children at the hospital. 7 Wednesday, April 16, 2014 Monday, April 21 Friday, April 18, 2014 Israel Photo Contest Time & Location: Squires Student Center, 2 nd floor Description: Any student who has ever traveled to Israel from Virginia Tech may choose their 2 best inspirational photos. The top 10 photos are chosen by committee and are exhibited on the second floor of Squires to share, inspire, and educate the Hokie community. Passers-by are able to vote on their favorite picture. The Hillel committee takes their vote and the votes of the passer-byers to choose the top 3. The top 3 are presented awards. On this day of the year, we pause to remember victims of the Holocaust. The names of those taken by the evils of war will be read aloud on the Drillfield.
